I wouldn't call this a contemporary take considering Winslet is suppose to be playing a comical despot. Catherine's husband was a twit and her son, just like his father. She pulled the Russian economy out of its grave, extended their borders over 200 thousand square miles. Yes her foreign policy was not great, but for the time period, nobody cared for a diplomat anyway, and serfdom was a part of Russian culture that was before Catherine's time and exceed somewhat after hers as well. The Regime makes Winslet's character a bit of a self aggrandizing twit, Catherine the Great is neither.
