Howe: "I’m still very proud of [Topographic Oceans] and very pleased with it. There are things in there you never would have thought Yes would do, particularly on side two [“The Remembering (High the Memory)”] - some beautiful, unusual, folk-like, almost Jethro Tull-ish things ... And one of my favorite bits is [sings portion of “The Remembering (High the Memory)”]. Now that to me is Yes at its most exceptional. It’s not [sings riff from “Roundabout”]; it’s in the beautiful, folky world." - GuitarPlayer, Sept 2023

Don't give up buddy. Just expressing yourself through this channel is proof you have the will to take whatever life throws at you. You have the love of your family and your love for them, and though you may not think, the love of the people who listen to your words and the music you play for them. Now for the music. I have read that Jon had read this book something Yogi and Tantra before writing the lyrics for this album. Thus the names Ritual and Ancient, The Revealing Science of God, and Remembering. Their music has a way of opening up your mind to mixed feelings and emotions and taking you to places of those forgotten memories and also of places each individual person, or better yet your own spiritual journey in your mind from the sounds within their songs. This is my take on the music of their music they wrote in the 70s and maybe partaking in some drugs while writing such music as well. Only my thoughts. I could be wrong about it but these are my thoughts. In the 80s while still pushing the boundaries of prog they I believe tried to keep up with the sounds that people were making. I'll stop there. Maybe I'm talking too much about things I don't really know a lot about. I just wanted to share my thoughts with everyone here. What do other people think about my perspective of this band? Yes has been my favorite go-to band since I started listening to their music in the early 70s, especially on those shitty days when things just weren't going that well. Their music always picked me up. Now I come to your channel on them days to so I can cheer up. Yes, you heard that right. So don't stop doing what you enjoy doing

Thank you so much Bruce... I truly appreciate it my friend. You can really feel the healing power from these tracks. I don't know what it is exactly that does it.... maybe it's Jon's vocals. Maybe it's Rick. Who knows. Maybe it's just a perfect harmony between them all in this beautiful blend of old and new.... traditional and progressive.... the perfect duality.

You are not the only person to cry on the songs of Yes. There are over 50 reactors on You Tube channel...men and women..that have cried on the songs of Yes!!!! The music of Yes speaks to the Spirit,Soul and mind of the person to provoke memories that are both sad and joyous.....painful and Loving.....the group's vision was and still is the Descension and Ascension of humankind....and along the way...they hoped to reach people who identified with this theme. Your tears were shed on " And You and I, Gates of Delirium, & The Remembering." The Remembering is to invoke memories of Ancient beginnings........Gates of Delirium is about the struggles Humanity is going through now.... individually and collectively..."And You and I" and "Awaken" is about our Journey with The Divine Presence of the Creator to Eternity....Humanity is "Close To the Edge" of that reality becoming "Real." I think you are starting become a "Yes" person.

My favourite song from this album. Alan White's contribution cannot be ignored on this album. Apparently, Alan wrote the trippy keyboard sections. Jon's vocals are great, but don't overlook Squire's! The moment they sing together...That's the essence of Yes. The Simon & Garfunkel of Prog! Ha! Chris's musical origins were from his choir boy years and that played a big part in his relationship with Jon Anderson. He knew exactly what he was doing when harmonising with Jon. Also, Chris was proud of his bass line on this. He switched to fretless. Alan's playing on the outro is absolutely fantastic and Jon and Chris have you in a highly emotional vocal stranglehold. Absolute brilliance!

The 2 Tracks of the 2nd Record of 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' are total different from the first ones. This is what makes TfTO so One of a Kind, that's the Reason it is, in my opinion, The absolute Masterwork in Progressive Rock of all Time. So many Bands had attempt, but no Band ever will ever achieve the Beauty and Depth of 'Tales from Topographic Oceans'. It's the musical legacy of Yes. This Album is not from this World, It's from far beyond. It breathes The Thought of Gods Creation. ✨ Kind Regards Heinz from Munich. 🌷🌱🌳

For many years Rick bemoaned this album in justifying his departure, saying this album, had far too much 'padding' . All I will say is:- if this is true, it was bloody good padding!!!! I Always enjoyed the way the 4 distinct pieces linked together like pieces of a jigsaw with riffs already heard surreptitiously sneaking in and out here, even bits of 'close to the edge' found there way in, very deliberately, if you listen carefully, all very deliberate and not padded. And therefore, your insights are worthy and count as very worthwhile and interesting. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

YYYES!, Jon's voice IS pure dopamine. And Chris is always on point. This intro is so much about floating and his bass feels like magic bubbles under the sea of a lullaby drifting away into your childhood memories which you mentioned regarding Time moving faster as we age. This is what the song is about, reflecting on the nostalgic innocence we once knew but have forgotten. It moves in drifts through ebbs & flows to build into a tidal wave of emotions which eventually brings you back into a state of profound peace, grace and gratitude for life itself. And yes, YES were more than a band. I've always felt their ability to channel some sacred state of the Divine. They were a spiritual inner journey that takes you to where only music can go when performed by a deeper awareness and YES did it in spades. This song is spellbinding & brings me to TEARS instantly & keeps me there throughout until I'm weeping. YES!!!!!!!! Rainbow, Sunlight, Tell me, Alternate View, SURELY SURELY!!!!!!!))))))........ Now sadly some fans seem to have issues with this song because they don't appreciate the sheer beauty of the smooth undulating mood it creates. My guess is that it's the Rockers who can't "get it". YET the next song is the complete opposite and offers more psychedelia & Rock than even some ROCKERS can handle! I LOVE how YES by the sheer power of their creativity, bold inhibitions and imagination could SHOCK & AWE the audience without trying to appease. I think they were revealing things to us and allowing us to SEE! Oh well I LOVED them & I am happy you can appreciate.

@@L33Reacts I highly recommend the "Tales" reaction videos done by Doug Helvering ("The Daily Doug"). He's a music professor and he does a great job deciphering the gist of the lyrics. Each song relates to a different Hindu shastra, and to confirm your experience, yes - Jon anderson was attempting to evoke ancient/forgotten knowledge (i.e., "things we once knew so well"). That's literally why this song is called "The Remembering" - he is exhorting us to recall the wisdom and precepts once known by our ancestors. Clearly he was somewhat successful in this regard, though it greatly varies from listener to listener.
@pwethman1

“Relayer” in this case means a teller of stories(perhaps the most literal thing Jon ever wrote). The Remembering talks about how stories and traditions are passed down through generations.

Wonderful reaction to this personal favorite yes song of mine! As I've mentioned before, I think this is some of the Finest singing the band has ever recorded! Squire plays a fretless bass throughout the song, and Rick provides amazing soundscapes with keyboards and synths! I'm very happy that you enjoyed it, btw. Next up: The Ancient-Giants under the sun. the first 2 thirds of the song may seem a bit....bizarre ( it's mostly instrumental), but it ends with a nice acoustic section. Will always be my favorite band and this is my 2nd favorite album from them. Jon's concept and he and Steve's baby as it were. As you know not pleasant for Rick. Besides the fluff he despised, Jon has said in interviews he was a bit of a "Napoleon" in the studio. The last two songs are where there are the most repeating phrases etc. that Rick hated, and are getting more experimental as they went. One thing certain is you see and understand the progression from Close to the Edge to Relayer within (4) side length songs.

Stick with Dr. YES! This is about Remembering, the images you were seeing are part of out shared Genetic Heritage and Traditions. Truly a sublime piece, was my favorite on the record for a long time, but The Revealing edges it out. You picked up on the fascinating subject of our pre- history, ancient maps depicting Antartica accurately without ice, and such things as the incredible feats of precision stone cutting of megaliths over 10,000 years ago. These things fascinate me! (and obviously Jon too.) The next side, "The Ancient" delves more deeply into these subjects, ancient civilizations such at Lemuria and Atlantis, and is the wildest track on the record. You will get images! Looking forward to your reaction to that! Bright Blessings to you & your family, and your viewers!

When TFTO was originally released, music critics gave it a thumbs down. They absolutely hated it. I think Tales is their greatest musical creation to date. I hated the fact that after Relayer, they changed. And in my opinion…not for the better. Don’t get me wrong, they were still crankin’ out hits and great music…just not my taste is all. Didn’t take me on that spiritual journey I became so expectedly familiar with…the ‘70’s yes was absolutely mind altering.

My favorite Yes song, though if I’m listening to Awaken that’s my favorite song LOL. The Revealing Science Of God seems to get more love, the chanted intro draws you in sooner while The Remembering takes time to build. It’s definitely a slow burn, you have to do a little work to get the reward. That just makes you appreciate the reward more, though. And the expression on your face at the crescendo showed that you got it! “Alternate tune, alternate tune,” Steve with a variation of his motif from TRSOG and Rick’s bright, exuberant keys setting your soul free to fly (to paraphrase Silent Lucidity), while Chris & Alan keep your body in place so your spirit can find its way back. All I’m going to say about “Awaken” is that Jon considers it Yes’ masterwork. After you listen to the studio version, check out the live Jon Anderson & Todmobile version.

18:10-19:54 - the wide open atmospheric interlude here is one of the most beautiful passages Rick Wakeman ever played for the band (I assume it was also written by him, though someone in the comments here suggested it came from Alan White...anyway, Wakeman certainly orchestrated it with the right kind of sounds). A massively cosmic feeling of flying through dawn, or through a vast mental space half outside normal space and time - or yes, like a bird over the ocean.

The four tracks on Topographic Oceans need to be taken as “one” piece to appreciate it because the next track, The Ancient, is a COMPLETE change which you’ll find weird, Yes have NEVER played anything like it before or since, and listening to The Ancient as one track is like taking something “out of context”; enjoy the ride but with an open mind !

If you continue on Tales, the next song will be the most experimental, The Ancient. Then it ends with one of the best Yes songs... Ritual.

For many (even Yes fans) this album is too long-winded. "this could have been condensed into a single LP". I don't think a single note is too much on this album. On the one hand, because the topics change again and again, on the other, because especially in our hectic time a bit of slowness and linger is necessary.

“The most mellow Yes song” ? Maybe you're right. But it takes place in the whole. The four parts are to take as one big piece. The two next pieces are just amazing. I have a big preference for “The Ancients”. And I agree, Yes is more then music. Of course we came from Apes, it doesn't make us smaller, or less interesting. We are from the Sun as Jon Anderson says (in the last song from this album). And all living creatures on this planet are. Don't underestimated the other forms of life. Some are as amazing as we may be. And, for my part, I fear we are on the way of destroying much of the richness of all that surrounds us. And maybe destroying a great part of ourselves in the process. Maybe we will come out greater of this. Who knows. But don't doubt about things like evolution… these are proven since decades.

Listening to you , you need to listen to Going for the One title track, that gives you a visual which will cheer you right up.

When you get to the final track 'Ritual' make room for the live version from Yesshows. It's longer and even more bass and drums than the studio version.

Give Triumvirat a listen and the album Illusions On A Double Dimple is well worth a listen. The whole album is one idea, this becomes evident after a few listens 🙏

Side one was the "most experimental" you've heard from them? We're all smiling at each other, knowing what's coming up on the next side. Just know there's a LOT to come in the next two tracks and we are having a blast watching you surf these interdimensional waves.

I've just been struck by how much the choral mellotron at the end reminds me of some Radiohead tracks (e.g exit music for a film).

David Bowie was asked once if the highs and lows of addiction were in a way better than the middle of something like Prozac. He unequivocally said that the middle ground beats those uncontrollable feelings hands down. And he’s one that would have known. Try Ashes to Ashes by Bowie about mostly cocaine😊😢

This album and Going for the One I got at the same time to close the gaps between the Yes album and Talk. After Talk, the band dissolves into oddness until Fly from Here. Then Squire, then White RIP. Howe should retire the name w/o Squire. Name it: Going for the Edge of Topographical fragile tomato.
