For instance, he was requested by Lincoln to command the union troops but declined. After the Civil War he was an advocate for the reformation efforts and met with Union generals. He was criticized from Confederate troops (post civil war) for being a gentleman to all people regardless of their history in the civil war. Like I said, interesting man. I think his statue would serve a better purpose in a museum's statue garden or something less public where the city could receive money for entry fees from people who travel to Richmond to learn about civil war history. If a statue were to be placed in that same location, maybe civil war statue pertaining to the UCT (Union Colored Troops) who once occupied Richmond towards the end of the war. But then again, statues can be pretty gaudy.

He completely failed to support Vicksburg, despite advice, and caused the tide to turn in the war. Later, he was too scared to face Sherman, so he let him absolutely destroy Georgia. If he was such a good general, then why didn't he win the war?
