I bought your book and opened many windows that were painted and caulked shut and repaired them correctly. Kept on watching your videos and reading blog articles and was inspired to repair the plaster in the rooms we’ve renovated. Thank you for doing what you do! There’s no way I would have had the knowledge and courage to try all of this without your blog and book.

Wow, the first comment! Well, this is a good one. I am a sub to your channel and own an old house. I have been pondering buying new windows or fixing the old ones the way you do. This just gave me a project for next winter 🥶

Watching this in my 1876 Victorian Queen Anne living room. Some yahoo put argon windows in our master bedroom. Six of them. Can't see much out of them anymore. One has a sticker from 1992. Our downstairs antique windows are so much quieter. We've renovated the storm windows and will start on glazing interiors next spring/summer here in Michigan. I went through a phase where I wanted to hunt down the owners who'd made poor choices...We've also begun salvaging wavy glass where we can because we know there might be some cracking. We just keep soliciting flippers who are putting in vinyl - a sticking point with our local preservationists vs. the current historic board. PS - Our friends in new construction in Miami had water coming through their chef's kitchen pot lights from bad construction. The difference is that they paid hundreds of thousands for that house and we bought ours for $50k and have restored ourselves. Reuse, recycle baby!

Why the swipe at Ocasio-Cortez?

Because her Green New deal outlines tearing down or forcing all old buildings to be renovated to bring them up to current energy standards which would is not realistic even in a fantasy world in the 10 year time span dictated by the bill.

Ugh, I got 3 1/2 minutes in and couldn't continue because I got so angry. How much do you want to be that Mr. Nolan? was paid off by the construction industry.

Nah, they have enough money to pay a semi reputable journalist to write a glowing review of a current building process rather than some hack fresh out of school who has never picked up a crow bar to demo something in his life.

The lead level in older homes is low compared to commercial and industrial. You have to quantify the actual lead amount to be fair. And I don't chew on my window trim at the dinner table. I'd be more fearful of the off gassing of modern Chinese sheetrock. Energy efficient.... we can install storm windows, weather stripping and maintain our glazing. Our windows don't end up in the landfill like vinyl windows do every 15 years. Modern homes don't have character, architecture or romance. Every owner is fixated with restoring their home as if it were their future spouse. Restored older homes neighborhoods are the best communities to live in. People take pride in their homes.

I'd love to hear about "white washing" from you in a video. I heard the phrase "to poor to paint, to proud to white wash". After researching.... poor people would mix lime (mineral) with water and smear it on their homes. Only the rich could afford proper paint. If your home was natural wood, you'd be thought of as "poor". Interested in hearing more about "white wash" as it may more often be confused as lead paint. I ran into it when stripping my siding. It literally felt like scrapping mortor when using a heat lamp.
