The Hula valley was once a home to a lake and swamps area. People who lived in the region suffered from malaria. During the 1950s a vast drainage project was done to drain the area and dry the swamps. Two drainage canals were dug. In recent years the ecological importance of the original natural system was understood, and efforts are taken to restore flooded areas and rivers of the Hula . Part of it is the restoration of a beautiful section of the Jordan river, that carries water into Agamon HaHula, a main area where the Hula lake came back to life. Riding along the restored Jordan and the Jordan canals is a great fun, where you can enjoy trees and local vegetation including the beautiful yellow water lily - Nuphar lutea.
עמק החולה היה פעם אזור אגם וביצות. אנשים שחיו באזור סבלו ממלריה. במהלך שנות ה-50 נעשה פרויקט עצום לניקוז השטח וייבוש הביצות. נחפרו שתי תעלות ניקוז. בשנים האחרונות הובנה חשיבותה האקולוגית של המערכת הטבעית המקורית, ונעשים מאמצים לשקם אזורים מוצפים ונחלים. במסגרת זו שוקם קטע יפה של נהר הירדן, המוביל מים לתוך אגמון החולה, אזור מרכזי בו קם אגם החולה לחיים. הרכיבה לאורך הירדן המשוחזר ותעלות הירדן היא כיף גדול, שם תוכלו ליהנות מעצים וצמחייה מקומית כולל שושנת המים הצהובה והיפהפייה.
