great story man. passing jlpt n1 in such a short time amazed me. I'd like to ask for ur advice if possible. I'm registered to n3 that comes up in 1 month and right now I can pass n4 with struggle. So what would u recommend so that I could pass n3 even barely?

Seems Matt has had to loosen up a bit on his anti output early stance. Like 3.5 plus years ago, he was pretty solid on discouraging outputting until you had a pretty strong intermediate level of comprehension, at least. He has deleted some of those older videos stating that but he still doesn't promote speaking early. I follow a variety of language coaches, not just MIA types and there is zero doubt that those that speak pretty early advance much faster . Yes, "speak from day one" for Japanese is a bit ridiculous cuz of how different the language is from English, but speaking from about an A2 level, will help you make way faster progress. The proof is all over the place. When I used to politely point that out to Matt, he would delete my comments hahaha..... Yeah, taking a long time immersing by listening to fun content until you reach a strong B2 level is low stress and maybe more fun, but most will progress slower. So you speaking early certainly helped you accelerate your progress. No doubt about that👍

I personally think the time you start outputting is largely irrelevant as long as you don't self impose a plateau by becoming comfortable with what ever level you're at during any given stage of development. The recent trend in pitch accent, to me, proves that progression in output can be endless (at least up to native-like..) as long as you don't get comfortable and always question if you could be/sound better. If sounding as native-like as possible is important to you, then there is no reason to not be consciously trying to think where to improve. And if you do that, you will.... there is no reason why a terrible sounding early out-putter would be fixed at that level any more than they would be fixed in the state of having a relatively small vocabulary.

i definitely think there's something to the practical knowledge of speaking once you have a decent level of understanding. It makes anything you learn so much more relevant and attaches emotions to words and sentences, such that it becomes instantly more memorable how to say things in a certain way

i've never been too deep in the "language learning methods" rabbit hole, but i've been dreaming of mastering JP some day and your channel is legitimately one of the only things that inspire to come back to it and try again no matter how many times i fail

Did you watch a lot of youtube with japanese subtitles? I can understand like 70-80% with subs but watching raw i barely understand. Do I just watch need to watch more raw? I have about 200hrs of active listening.

Thanks for the video! How did you deal with rare and exotic keywords in rtk? Also, how did you feel after the rtk when you knew a lot of single kanji meanings, but not the words?

My experience learning Mandarin Chinese was that doing a massive amount of shadowing native content had an equally massively positive impact on my accent, intonation, rhythm and overall Chinese-ness of my speech once I finally started using the language for real while living in China. The main tools I used were shadowing RU-vid videos (for example there was a speech by Jack Ma that I shadowed hundreds of times), as well as using Glossika to force output and get immediate correction / shadowing of the native sentence (in that case I got about 100,000 reps shadowing sentences in both the Taiwan and Beijing Mandarin versions of Glossika). So it’s a bit different than what you or others might mean by “early output” but for me it was highly effective.

Another banger! Inspirational stuff! I also output right from the start but i don't think it affected my japanese in a bad way at all. I think my accent would be just as bad as it is now if i stopped myself from outputting in the early stages, because i think that there is a lot of actual practice needed to get your mouth accustomed to mimicking the sounds of the language before you get good at speaking in the first place. The only thing that was definitely affected is my pitch accent, but thats because i didn't even know of it's existence back when i first started outputting a lot. I think that if you start outputting while being aware of pitch accent from the start (and also actively study it ofc) there shouldn't be a problem. For me, outputting early was great, because it actually motivated me to immerse more in order to understand more of what my friends were saying and not sound like a baby myself lmao

I like watching K-1 kickboxing, that's the only Japanese RU-vid I watch right now. The fights themselves are not hard to follow but the fighter interviews are still hard for an intermediate like me. Will definitely check out some of those channels and podcasts you mentioned.
