Good topic. Needed topic. Especially for newbies. There is so much crap on the market for language learning , that people think that 10 minutes a day will make them fluent in Japanese. What you are saying may seem discouraging, but it's helping people be real about the cost involved. The cost of massive time and effort required and yeah, for some, after 2 years of immersion time, may come out feeling it was kind of pointless for them to invest into a language. In fact, some people's lives may get more messed up after immersing like 6 hours a day for 3 years. Haha..... Good to see you're keeping it real about what is truly required in the process of fluency of an Asian language

@@oojiman At least as per a recommendation of yours, 4 hours a day bare minimum for years is still a decent amount to have a life and make good progress in three or four years.

Japanese is one of the most non-pretty languages ever with mostly non-pretty words that are embarrassingly funny, and I don’t understand how can one try to learn boring overrated languages, when there are such gorgeous and pretty and heavenly languages as Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese / Danish / Welsh / Breton / Cornish etc that are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most modern and coolest languages ever that are way too pretty not to know and that are truly fun and the most fun to learn and speak and hear and see etc, and all should be learning these magical languages with gorgeous words that look and sound serious and professional and that are easy and pretty category 1 languages, instead of trying to learn one non-pretty language that is not fun and impossible with characters etc that one is never going to be truly fluent in, anyway, and there’s isn’t anything of vālüe about non-pretty languages and about learning non-pretty languages lol and there isn’t any lógīcàl reason to try learning such languages that sound so funny with non-pretty words such as Japanese and Chinese languages and Korean etc, and, the true vālüe lies in the prettiest languages ever which are true works of art that truly dsv all the attention from learners and that all should be learning 2gether with some of the other pretty and easy languages like Hungarian and Slovene and Galician and Manx and Irish and Scottish Gaelic - language learning is a hobby and it is meant to be fun, and it can only be fun if one chooses wisely, by only choosing the pretty and easy languages, and by learning many pretty and easy languages at the same time, instead of only trying to learn one impossible language, and choosing wisely is the key to being a successful polyglot and making the learning process enjoyable, as pretty languages with pretty words naturally bring a lot of joy to the eye and ear, and, I have all the pretty languages on my list of languages that I want to learn and improve, and am upper intermediate level in Icelandic and Norse and writer level in English and upper advanced level in Dutch and intermediate level in Welsh and advanced level in Norwegian etc, and the learning process itself is very enjoyable and fun, as pretty languages are naturally fun to learn and naturally motivating, and the only right reason to learn new languages is, for their pretty and poetic words, so only pretty languages should be learnt and spoken!

Besides, there’s nada extraordinary about Japanese or other similar languages - the Norse languages like Norse and Icelandic and Faroese and Norwegian and Danish etc and the other prettiest languages that come mostly from Norse or that have been influenced by Norse a lot such as English and Dutch and Gothic and Welsh are the truly extraordinary languages that are truly fun to learn and speak, and all should be learning them, instead of trying to learn non-pretty languages such as Japanese etc, after all, language learning is a hobby and it is meant to be fun, and if can only be fun is one chooses wisely, only the pretty languages with pretty and gorgeous words and cool and modern sound patterns and sounds and pronunciation rules!

While college can be really busy, I'm glad I started now as I do have time to actually study and immerse. I don't know how good I'll get over time, but I'll be happy with being better than I am right now. Overall I do really agree with you though. Time is a valuable resource and for many people studying something useful for their professional careers would be a much better use of their time then learning a language for a country they probably won't live in or just to understand anime without subtitles. If someone is going to devote a lot of time to any language, it should probably have a practical application for learning it unless it's genuinely just a hobby and not cutting into real productive effort.

One of my reasons for wanting a super high level of Japanese is that I live here and have Japanese friends... But joining Refold during the lockdown and getting into the whole "early input is bad" thing really fucked my Japanese up. And it's sad because I have *Japanese* friends that I just sorta ghosted. Now I've just been using perfectionism as an excuse to not try, and while I've been trying to get out and talk to people more (I also have some shit going on in my life), it's going to take a while to undo the damage. I think about my Indian friend here who does English and Japanese Stand-up... I told him about how I started getting similar compliments to Matt after doing Refold and he was like "lmao I knew you watched Matt VS Japan! Look you idiot, they give me the same compliments too. They literally say that about anyone who's above N3, stop worrying about your accent and just live your life"

Also, ppl have never had friends and have no idea what friends are, and only the pure protectors aka the alphas reflect words such as friends etc, and such words cannot be misused by ppl, and anyways, if one talks to many ppl from Japan, one should tell them to learn the pretty languages, including English, which all should know by now, like, how can one not learn English in the 21st century lol, and there’s no good reason to learn non-pretty languages, and trying to learn non-pretty languages to talk to x or y to feel less lonely is even db than just learning non-pretty languages in general - Norse & Icelandic are the most alpha languages ever, and if one wants to sound as cool as possible (which all should want) one must learn them, and also the other prettiest languages, as they are the most perfect languages that are perfect to show off with, and that sound cool and professional and serious, plus the prettiest languages ever are the languages of the future, and they are a must-know for every learner!

I've found most of what I've gained out of learning Japanese wasn't even really the language itself. Before learning Japanese, I'd never really worked hard for anything before and lacked discipline. Life didn't really have anything going on and I just drifted through day to day. Now, the hours I've put into Japanese since has trained my willpower, and enjoying success at learning Japanese has given me a sense of empowerment that I've never had before that I have what it takes to put in the work and get better at anything. Learning Japanese has trained my patience. I'm an instant gratification monkey, which had me drop almost everything I tried. Now I feel confident that with the right decisions over time, future me will be in a place I'll have 'now me' to thank for. Learning Japanese taught me to value my own time. Before I was always up everyone's arses living off other people's attention. The hours spent immersing are lonely ones, but this instilled not just a tolerance of being alone, but a deep value in my own time working towards something that matters a lot to me. I'm less needy, less jealous, and less insecure in my friendships, and this balance between my time and other people's time has improved my friendships. Learning Japanese has been one of the most important things I've done, and the character building has been 90% of the value. I've moved on from Japanese now, putting everything I've gained into new skills. Knowing the language is cool too I guess lol

Yeah I really like the overall message of this video. I don't think being amazing at Japanese is that exciting (I'm not amazing though so I wouldn't know). However, I think what will make you happy and provide you long-lasting joy (depending on the person) are the Japanese friends you make, or the content you find that you're excited about. It's just like how it is in your native language. You don't really care about being amazing at it. You care about the friends you can talk to, the videos or books you love that you can enjoy or learn from.

Right. When I wanted to start and to be very good to Piano classical music, I started right away to translate and transcript Chopin and Beethoven pieces. It took me 8 hours a day. In 1 month I was able to play Noctures of Chopin. Normally it takes 7 years maybe 10. Same for boxing, I was in immersion totally to progress well and fast. Not only study but thinking and living ( 生きがい) breathing into it. Japanese is same. Students must stop to be students. They have to sink into the 日本 water and win the hell. You have to immerse the whole day and become Japanese. Writing only in Japanese keyboard, only watching Japanese things. Change the language phone settings into Japanese. Walking by listening podcasts, reading in the metro. If you like dancing or boxing you learn boxing in Japanese. Shadowing, speaking to oneself. You like cooking, you watch recipes in Japanese, you like learning Italian, you learn Italian with Japanese translation. Maximizing time. And 8 hours a day to live in Japanese could be possible, easy and enjoyable. Anyway, I want to become comedian in Japan in Japanese ( my 生きがい)

So I got some decent results but nothing record breaking so far. I never sat here expecting to be a God in a year because I'm not an idiot.

But the thing is. When you get to that point where it’s easy to immerse, which I’m told is around B2, putting in huge amounts of immersion isn’t all that difficult. Getting there is the real issue, IMO. Having to go to the dictionary every other sentence. Shit

Yep that's what I'm waiting for, the point where immersion becomes easy and I can even do it all day long because it's just what I do in my native language/English. This is how I got fluent in English, it happened subconsciously, I just wanted to experience things that needed English. Online gaming, RU-vidrs, etc. Now, a year later since you posted the comment, how are things going? Did you reach B2? is it easy to immerse now? If so how long did that take you? And what was your routine?

Nice video, but if you are watching videos to motivate yourself continue studying Japanese (or any other language) - you are probably at the point to reconsider your life choices and just move on. But when you know more than 2 languages (or for many people more than 3, cause you get 1 native like country-language and maybe 1 local-native dialect your parents speak and one 1 that you learn in school/uni) you already know what it going on and how hard/easy it can be. Although there is a huge difference between learning a new german-group language and asian-group (let's call them for clarity like this) Japanese/Korean/Cantonese etc. This is on another level of difficulty, I understand 5 (and fluent/can freely speak or watch videos at 1.5 speed only in 3 of them) languages from german-group. Now picking up on Japanse and oh boy, I'm about to give up. Am I about to fail? :|

Great video. Now I know why my Japanese progress isn't going as fast as before, but it's normal after more responsibilities in life. Still keeping daily immersion tho. Ever since I've gotten a job, I also use my free time to work on skills directly relating to work. Before that, the free time was for Japanese immersion. Maintaining discipline for both skills has been a bit stressful.

I like how you're a realist. It's so funny because they all say "what's the quickest and easiest way to learn a language"?But why does learning a language need to be easy? Why can't it be hard and time-consuming? Being able to speak Japanese at a high level is valuable because not many people obtain that ability. If there was an easy way to learn Japanese, then everyone would be fluent in no time.

Lol what ns, Japanese is one of the most non-pretty languages ever with mostly non-pretty words that are embarrassingly funny, and I don’t understand how can one try to learn boring overrated languages, when there are such gorgeous and pretty and heavenly languages as Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese / Danish / Welsh / Breton / Cornish etc that are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most modern and coolest languages ever that are way too pretty not to know and that are truly fun and the most fun to learn and speak and hear and see etc, and all should be learning these magical languages with gorgeous words that look and sound serious and professional and that are easy and pretty category 1 languages, instead of trying to learn one non-pretty language that is not fun and impossible with characters etc that one is never going to be truly fluent in, anyway, and there’s isn’t anything of vālüe about non-pretty languages and about learning non-pretty languages lol and there isn’t any lógīcàl reason to try learning such languages that sound so funny with non-pretty words such as Japanese and Chinese languages and Korean etc, and, the true vālüe lies in the prettiest languages ever which are true works of art that truly dsv all the attention from learners and that all should be learning 2gether with some of the other pretty and easy languages like Hungarian and Slovene and Galician and Manx and Irish and Scottish Gaelic - language learning is a hobby and it is meant to be fun, and it can only be fun if one chooses wisely, by only choosing the pretty and easy languages, and by learning many pretty and easy languages at the same time, instead of only trying to learn one impossible language, and choosing wisely is the key to being a successful polyglot and making the learning process enjoyable, as pretty languages with pretty words naturally bring a lot of joy to the eye and ear, and, I have all the pretty languages on my list of languages that I want to learn and improve, and am upper intermediate level in Icelandic and Norse and writer level in English and upper advanced level in Dutch and intermediate level in Welsh and advanced level in Norwegian etc, and the learning process itself is very enjoyable and fun, as pretty languages are naturally fun to learn and naturally motivating, and the only right reason to learn new languages is, for their pretty and poetic words, so only pretty languages should be learnt and spoken!

I studied japanese a lot for 2 years and then went to visit 4 of the japanese friends that I got from hellotalk. the goal was to see if this was really as good as it seemed. it was great. but when i got home, i found it hard to study because I couldn't see or be with japanese people and friends all the time. now after a two year break I visited my friend who goes to a school where there are japanese people. and after just one weekend of speaking and having fun with japanese students I got so again. so i think that is my goal. i want to learn the language to a point where we can relate to each other in both english and japanese.

I think another big issue is that people don't realize how much they are using Japanese to escape whatever is going on in their life. The fact is, if you want have a materially comfortable life and you feel compelled to study a foreign culture for hours and hours a day, maybe you should take a step back and ask why you're doing it. It isn't normal for people to feel the urge to abandon their mother tongue for over a year, especially for almost no chance at material gain

People have this fantasy that Japan will make all their dreams come true and will be a magical paradise of anime girls. When they finally get there they realize. Its another country where everyone is over worked, it costs tons of money to get a small place to live and not all Japanese girls are that nice haha.

Fr (as someone in highschool as-well) I feel the same way. I missed out on many hobbies in my childhood due to financial reasons and now it’s too late to pursue some of them but I’ve been fixated on Japanese so long. Best part is, it doesn’t require any money or talent. Anybody can put in the work and get it done. So if I quit learning now, this time I’ll only have myself to blame cause it was accessible to me the whole time. Tbh it’s hard asf but I’ll regret it sm if I quit.

I feel like the point about asking yourself why you’re doing it and whether it is really worth it is a good one. I started because I wanted to watch anime with subs. But once I got good, I realised that it’s not as great as I thought it would be. I almost gave up learning Japanese. But eventually I decided that I wanted to try living in Japan for a few years. Not because I think Japan is some paradise but because I want to experience a non western culture. I’m now really motivated to keep improving even further. So even though the amount of effort I put in was probably too much for the goal I had set myself, I feel like it wasn’t wasted. I guess I’m trying to say that, even if your initial goal doesn’t require much effort, it’s fine to put in more than is required. You can always find the next goal once you’ve achieved your initial one. Of course, as long as you are happy with the opportunity cost

Thank you for keeping it real with us though, and telling the truth. People need to accept that they also might never get there and that the view from the top is kind of lame. Hopefully people get it and don't delude themselves further and actively make a decision to continue or quit.

@@oojiman I have a feeling that I'll just burn out after a while. Hopefully I'll acquire enough to become somewhat functional in Slovak. But since I have Slovak roots and listened to my family members speaking Slovak over the years, I don't have any psychological hangups as I do with Japanese. Some of my Slovak friends do correct me a lot, but I feel like they are on my side. It wasn't like that with the Japanese. It got so bad in Japan that after a while whenever a Japanese would approach me for a free Engrrrrish lesson, I would start singing the ABC song until they walked away. Or I'd say something really fast like 「あれっ?鈴木さん?!いつも大変お世話になっております」just to throw them off a bit. If they continued in Engrrrrish, I would say 「あのさ 郷に入っては郷に従えっていう諺知ってるでしょう?」. Some would continue in Engrrrrish and ask, "How do you even know that?!" The underestimation is just unreal...anything to diminish us in order to always place themselves in a superior position despite all their nonsense talk about their "gaijin complex." Man...they are just a bunch of sad, racist fucks and I really don't know why the weeb army on RU-vid wants to connect with them. I haven't been back for 12 years. Why would I ever want to go back to hell?

The elephant in the room is how incredibly intelligent the spokespersons of these methods are. IMO, if not genius level intelligence, then very near genius level. I understand the effort they put in is still a factor, but you're not going to get the results they get if you don't have the natural capacity for it. In computer terms, you'll never run that brand new 3d game at the same speed, with the same fps as the guy with the best GPU/hardware. But if you tell people that then you won't sell your game...
