That was a terrible shot in my opinion. Quartering hard away on the move at that distance.

@w c Agreed, it looked like it backed up after it got hit. No follow through either. They should have explained it better if it was a true miss. If not, your hunt should be done.

@w c yes agreed. The initial reaction looked like it hit too far back. A gut shot elk isn't surviving. Poor from the hunters not to follow up.

Yeah the dude totally gut shot the first bull. Didn't even try for a follow up shot on it, as it walked over the ridge, had the audacity to call it a clean miss. Then after all that they shot another elk anyways. Right on. No wonder outta state hunters have such a bad reputation here in wyoming

Hey John. We understand where you're coming from, but that was 100% a complete miss. On the footage of this shot you can clearly see the bullet hitting right in front of the bull, zoomed in, and in slow motion in the field reviewing it, it was easy to see it was a clean miss. Also, that bull when Chris missed, had moved one ridge over and for the next hour they watched him rutting cows and they were able to watch him from all angles, otherwise yes, they would have dove off into the timber and searched for a day if it had been hit. We are not hiding anything here one bit. Watch the footage and you will see the miss.

Thanks for the reply. I apologize if I sounded accusatory. I think there are some lessons to be learned from that footage that are worthy of fleshing out - experience, shot angle, shooting position, etc... and probably mentioning how you knew it was a miss, that you saw the bull rutting afterwards, etc. A lot of guys, myself included, who can’t see the slo-no footage saw that as a hit just based on the bulls reaction to the shot. You bring up very valid points and it is something we will do a better job of to explain the situation afterward and make it clearer for people who are not there with us. All of these types of discussions are great to talk about to hopefully help another hunter out. Sometimes we worry about the film being too long, but these are good use cases to expand on, and like you mentioned, good lessons to talk about. We appreciate the feedback! Best of luck this season.

I'm glad to hear you watched him for so long and confirmed he was uninjured. It sure looks in the footage like you hit him on the back right leg, but y'all have more info than we do which, to the point, is part of the problem. Whether we have popular media channels at our disposal or not, we are all ambassadors and caretakers of the sport. Doubtful onlookers and those who dislike hunting will not get this far into the comment section, and I humbly propose editing the video to include the info you mention here.

Agree vernice video, but the mountains are littered with dead and wounded animals lost to 1000 yard rifles. Nothing real about that kind of hunting.

@@terryzanger7152 Everyone blames grizzly and wolves for the decline in elk yet Yellowstone is full of elk bear and wolves. I'm guessing the decline is mostly due to hunters thinking they miss. It doesn't drop in its tracks so "i must have missed let's go find another bull". All the snipers with 1000 yard rifles these days I'm guessing for every elk tag there are twice as many killed as there are tags.

Got to slowly get them into it! They'll eventually get hooked like the rest of us

I agree man, same here. I've had to go at it alone and although it is peaceful, id much rather share the experience, get some help packing out, and not be the next missing person on 411.
