Mark Strassmann reports on the journey of the car that starred in the Steve McQueen classic, "Bullitt," and the owners who jealously protected their prize, even refusing to sell the car to McQueen himself. Strassmann also talks with McQueen's costar Jacqueline Bisset about the very special appeal that the Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback had (and continues to have) on movie audiences.

There were two "Bullitt" mustangs. One had a rather distinctive dent made in (I believe) in the left-front quarter panel. Steve McQueen thought the car looked a little too pristine... "too nice" and dented it with a baseball bat. His theory was that a cop couldn't afford to have every little ding repaired.

Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona went on sale for over 15 million (almost 18 million when including fees). Now this is Steve McQueens Bullet Mustang. This appeals to car collectors and cinema collectors. James Bond's Austin Martin sold for like 4.6 million. I would not be surprised if this exceeded that and approached the 10 million mark though I'm not an appraiser or collector of cars or Hollywood memorabilia and I know very little.

Sigh... okay. For everyone questioning this car's authenticity- ENOUGH ALREADY!!! Anyone who bothered to do a little research would know that there were TWO '68 Mustangs used in the film. One was the stunt car, the other was used for the "hero" shots. The one at Mecum was the hero car. The stunt car was also recently found at a scrapyard in Mexico. Finally, I read an article somewhere where what they believe is the surviving Charger ( there were two of those also apparently ) was also found. Does that clear everything up for the doubters?

AGREED, absolutely best car chase. I love to note some interesting quirks. When shifting he's pedaling it in-between gears like double clutching. After he spins out in the dirt and continues down the road it gets a second gear chirp only possible by an automatic. The charger was black which was not available in 68 and thats okay. Two or three hubcaps were thrown off only to be there in a later scene. I don't care, i just think its fun !

The suspension was highly modified to make the “jumps”. In fact there was more than one car. One had a 427 and the other had a 390. There may have been more. But those are the only two I saw during filming. I grew up in Santa Clara, California...spent a lot of time in San Francisco after graduating from high school. Happened upon the blocked streets and preparations for filming. Never saw McQueen or any actors.

I dunno - I wish that the Mustang hadn't been renovated . Can't help but notice that the divers side mirror isn't the one in the movie ; radio antenna is back on the cowel . Not quite the the Bullitt Mustang , y'know ? And the grill looks like a stock grill sans pony and frame . I once read that the grill was replaced by wire mesh . Beats me . When Mcqueen parks the car in the cab driver scene , there was no driver side mirror . During the chase , the mirror is on the car door . Which is which ? For me , it's lost a lot of movie /collector value . BTW - whats the vin # ?

There were 2 used for the movie. Both 390 V8 4 speed cars, but one was a true GT, the other was a non-GT fastback. Both were de-trimmed similarly so they looked alike, but there were some differences. This one ended up in private hands. It wasn't really restored per-say, repairs were made which preserved it, unlike what the son said. The other car, the one that skidded into the ditch at the end of the chase with a broken lower control arm was supposed to have been sent to a junkyard and destroyed. Well, in the last few years, it was found mostly stripped in Mexico, and last I saw was undergoing an actual restoration.

Don't get me wrong, the Bullitt Mustang is one cool car. It has definitely earned a premium over other 1968 Mustang GTs that are still extant, those that lived out their lives from the Ford dealership with less...prominence...I suppose. I always liked how the charger lost it's hub caps in every scene especially at the end all 4 flew off at once ha ha I guess they didn't want to shoot a scene without it's hub caps . Worth 4 million ? ? I think the hole in the trunk is another part of it's mistique due to so many theroys on why it was there .... Great for Ford as they released there new bullit wonder if any executives asked to buy it .
