That Dolly Parton doing gymnastics analogy was a little better. Anyone who has driven a big block V8 powered '60s car can appreciate that one. My own experience was with my '69 Corvette 427 coupe. It was the L36 single four barrel version with cast iron heads and it had the F41 handling package. I bought it when it had 69K miles on it in 2003, but handling was a complete joke. I think my '00 Camaro Z28 would have easily outhandled it.

If you remember "boss" was a teenage slang expression for something really cool in those days, but Larry Shinoda, the father of the Boss 302 and Boss 429 called them that because they were stuck for a name and he'd been given direction from Bunkie Knudsen to come up with these cars, so he named them after his reason for creating them, the boss.

My dad had a red on red 70 Mercury Cyclone GT 351C with same horn under the rubber ring in the steering wheel.

The street version of that engine was really restricted quite a bit by Ford from the factory. Ford was a pretty conservative manufacturer at that time when it came to putting their high performance engines into street cars when compared to companies like Dodge, Plymouth, and Pontiac. The BOSS 429 came with a tiny 735 cfm carb, a way too mild camshaft, and a really restrictive exhaust system with a smog pump. Radical race ready big blocks don't like little tiny carburetors and restrictive exhausts. Ford should've used the same solid lifter cam that they used in the 429 SCJ in the BOSS 429. The BOSS9 was actually pretty disappointing in stock form...especially since they cost about $5,000 new...really expensive for that time compared to most other muscle cars. The 428 CJ Mustangs had quicker 1/4 mile times then the BOSS 429s did and you could probably get one for $1,200-1,500 cheaper than a BOSS9 depending on what options you ordered with it. The BOSS9's needed a few modifications to compete with top shelf muscle cars like a Hemi Cuda or Challenger, an LS6 Chevelle, or a Buick GSX 455 Stage 1

@@jeremythompson9122 The Boss 429 had the heads and block for a stout race engine, more so than the CJ or SCJ. Street version was fluff but the potential for power was much greater w/ over-the-counter upgrades from Ford dealers. These would hold up to superchargers, while the 427 SOHC cranks and cross-bolt mains would grenade.

The cam was lumpy, the carb too small and the heads were different and not real hemi heads like the racecars had so no more than 420 horses. 428 CJs were faster on the 1/4, but the race version was a beast and far superior to the MoPar Hemi engine.

I'm a die-hard Ford guy, but you can't deny the impact mopar and the Hemi had on Nascar, on Ford and the muscle car market If I had the money, there would be a 69 Coronet and a 70 Sport Fury between my Fords. And a 70 Buick GSX, but thats another story :D

I went to a car show in Ventura California back in the mid 1980's, and a top executive from Ford pulled up with an enclosed trailer , and had one of these Boss 429's inside....he backed it down the ramp, parked it...and I went up to look how many miles it had on it...356 miles. That car is likely worth 500,000 today.

The Mustang isn’t a muscle car, though. It’s a pony car, a class of car named after it, even though it wasn’t the first of that type of car. The Plymouth Barracuda was first, by a couple weeks, but the Mustang was so popular that this new class of car was eventually named in its honor. Now some Mustangs may have muscle car-level power, but that doesn’t make them muscle cars.

Hell yeah, and I owned a 1969 Convertible in exactly that same color, but with a 302, and it was a non-GT package, and I have never seen even a picture of a BOSS 429 in basically candy apple red before, much less a moving HD video of one that is restored to that insane degree. I would have thought the front end of that car would have pitched up WAY more than the video shows under ANY acceleration. Really a beautiful car. Hell I would have been happy with a fastback with a 351 Windsor in that year and that color.

I agree about the so,so quality back then, especially the '68 Shelby Mustangs. The panel fit of the fiberglass hood and trunk lid was atrocious! If I saw something THAT badly assembled sitting in a showroom TODAY, I would RUN, NOT walk out of that showroom!!

I'll take a 70 Mercury Cyclone 429 SCJ over ANY Mustang...even the Boss 429. I'll take a Mercury Cougar over a Mustang as well...particularly a 68 Cougar GT-E 7 Litre with the 427 Side Oiler or a 69-70 Boss 302 Cougar Eliminator. I love Ford's but I actually prefer Mercury's. Merc's typically had a nicer interior than a regular Ford did. My favorite hot rod is a Mercury too...a 49-51 Lead Sled Merc. My grandfather had a 50 Mercury convertible that he bought brand new. LOVE that body style

Most gearheads I knew in the 70's and 80's could care less about the Boss 429 Mustangs. And the prices they sold for proved it.

He probably doesn't want a front end heavy, ill handling Mustang with a huge heavy engine stuffed in it that has too big of intake ports for strong low speed drivability.

My daughter had a 69 hard-top-we had it painted fire engine red it was only one in the Charleston area with a 390-someone(family?) stole it from her Grandmothers property during a death in the family.Had to have had it towed because the fly-wheel had a missing tooth-someone had to see this!!

I’ve met Marcus, we go to him a lot for restoration of different parts for our cougar restoration shop. He’s not cheap though, but he does things exactly like the factory. His shop is pristine, the cars he builds are immaculate in person. He has a 100% unrestored 68 mustang with 12k original miles he uses as reference for 68 mustang builds. The car looks exactly like it did the day it was made. He’s truly an incredible dude.

So they lengthened the Torino fastback's nose, planted a flush grille in it, and installed the flatter rear bumper under the grille. They called it, appropriately, Talladega. And in order to keep Mercury in the game they applied the same treatment to the Cyclone fastback to create the Cyclone Spoiler II.While the slippery pair were built in minuscule numbers to homologate them for racing, they all had the 428 Cobra Jet engine--an engine Ford never intended for racing. Instead, Ford built a limited number of Boss 429 Mustangs to homologate that open port engine for NASCAR competition. Go figure. With a clever tire strategy, the great LeeRoy Yarbrough won the 1969 Daytona 500 in a Torino Talladega prepared by Junior Johnson. David Pearson meanwhile would take 11 wins and the 1969 season championship driving Holman-Moody Talladegas. Richard Petty won another 10 races in Fords and finished second in the championship.**The Torino Talladegas and Cyclone Spoiler IIs are the cars that made the Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird necessary.

Brady Dog! When I was starting out I bought a 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1. It was a uni-body creation, rusting out, with a four-by-four between the gas tank and the rear springs. It looked new until you lifted the floor mats. The owner was a mechanic and safetied it himself at his house or it never would have passed. I listened to my daddy too, keeping it to the speed limit and slowing down for big bumps. Me and the guys in the band would drive around with the windshield heater on, the best three-speed automotive blow dryer ever made. It blew even when it was off. That car was hot!

I’d driven a ‘67 convertible with a 390 ci. 4-spd, but THIS WAS T H E ONE!! I went over to my Grandpap, AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT, and asked him if he would consider co-signing for me, as I was just out of school but did have a good job.....He listened intently, but told me that “ALAN, I’m afraid that’s just a little more car than you need” at this point”....and, of course, I’m SURE he was right, as he was a very wise man. I’m thinking he’s not only APPROVED OF THE ‘19 BULLITT that I finally have now, an homage to that Mach if there was EVER one, but riding high there beside me when I go for my trips!! Bought my first 1970 Boss302 from a young lady I went to college with, she also bought it during the gas shortage in the 1970's and only sold it because she wanted a automatic, I paid her $1200 for it in 1976.
