I remember when Jedi came out my toy store had a giant speeder bike hanging from the ceiling. These commercials make me nostalgic. Jedi was the first SW movie I saw in the theater (and twice) and remember going to Burger King afterwards and getting one of the collector glasses, which I still have along with all my old toys and thousands more that I have collected over the years but Jedi will always be my favorite because that was what kicked everything off for me as a kid and so many memories from that time. I had already owned some figures pre-Jedi but being born in 1978 those do not hold as many vivid memories for me. I can still remember my grandmother at the bus stop waiting for me and my sister and had the Pepridge Farm Star Wars cookies...which were so good and wish they still made something like them today
I forgot about those. I remember returning and my brother and I noticed immediate dust collection on all the displays. We looked forward to it when we'd come back. and one day it was gone. We moved on but that kind of stuff was so important to us. We kinda did the math as to how toys were moving in or out without realizing we were right in how things were moving on to the next "hot" item.
Damn dude I could make the same comment word for word(except I don’t still have the BK glasses😭). Those cookies were great and there’s no equivalent of the chocolate Vader ones these days. The shortbread cookies kind of taste like the Luke ones but not exactly. Do you remember the C-3PO cereal? Jedi in 1983 is the earliest memory I have now that I’m 900 years old. That started everything just like you said. That was a cool flashback, thanks bro
It’s depressing to think we were getting into SW as the rest of the world was starting to move on. That was a criticism of Spaceballs, that it was 5 years too late but it seemed like prime time to me
I have the same exact experience being born in 1978.. This was the 1st Star Wars movie I saw in the theater. I had the Ewok village! I still liked the other star wars toys also, they were all huge. Return of the Jedi was right about when I was old enough to go crazy over it.
These were the days as a kid remember getting plenty of these action figures under the tree for Christmas including Jabba's play set really these were the best times I was young happy had imagination and things were carefree and no bills to pay as I got many Star Wars toys and figures!
@4:47 "The REALITY defying Speeder Bike Chase"! LOL I love how the arms of the kid playing with the toys is implied to be passing through chair seats and table top. Watch carefully.... :)
I was born in '99 and I didn't even see any sw kenner toys in person until 2015 and luckily, I got a lot of my dad's old stuff in 2017. And two days ago, I was digging around my grandparents garage and found my dad's old rancor and jabba! You can't understand how cool that feeling was! After years of how much my dad hyped it up, he undersold it... I will hand them down to my kids and probably will name my son Kenner lol 😂
It really was incredible at the time. Wish every person had this as child growing up. Late 70’s early 80’s was amazing to grow up in. It was a golden era. 😊
O yes my child hood. Born in 1977 I remember going to KB Toys and trying to make my parents go broke. I wanted it so badly but I never got the scout walker. 😢
I wish I could go back in time and enjoy this period of Star Wars History. I was a kid during the Star Wars Special Edition movies and Shadows of the Empire. Those were fun times but I'd say when the movies and figures originally came out was even more exciting.
The reason these commercials are so great is that the children’s imaginary play is so authentic. It’s obvious that to make these commercials they didn’t have a script. They just put out the toys and told the kids, “go play” and they filmed it.
Spaceballs had it right; it's all about the merchandising! One could be forgiven for thinking that the toys came first, then the movie was created around them. 😂 Those fast-paced ads sure packed a lot of 'story' into their brief run time.
With ROTJ you could see the boost in quality of the action figures. Color and detail. Jabba's palace gave them a nice selection of characters to work with. I'm here after looking at Gentle Giant's Jumbo Vintage Kenner Action Figures. I gotta say not only do I want to pay the $100 to get into their guild to get the free Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back™ - FX-7™ Jumbo Figure but I want to pre-order Star Wars: Return of the Jedi™ - Max Rebo™, Amanaman™, Droopy McCool™, Sy Snootles™ Jumbo Figures. I really do want Amanaman but the Max Rebo Band is totally awesome. Those jumbo 12" figures (in the vintage Kenner packaging) are awesome.
12:31 Kid: "I may be a youngling, but I grant myself the rank of Jedi knight." Darth Vader: "What!? How can you be a youngling and call yourself a Jedi Knight!?" Kid: "Take a seat Vader!" (Vader loses to the child) Darth Vader: "I see why the council didn't rank me master!"
Holy Hellfire! That's Judge Frollo I'm Hearing R.I.P. Tony Jay (1933-2006) Voice of Judge Frollo from Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame an amazing and chilling performance singing Hellfire
0:01 0:07 Tony Jay Also Played The Voice Of Frollo From Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame In 1996 And James Earl Jones Is Best Known As The Voice Of Mufasa From Disney's The Lion King In 1994. Thanks Mate. X
I meant the figure, but they were originally going to make Luke have a blue lightsaber in Jedi, but they gave him a green one so it would show up better against the desert sun. He did have a blue lightsaber in the trailer, so Kenner used a clip from that.
austin baker In the movie however, they originally kept his blue lightsaber but they thought the blue didn't blend in with the blue sky of tatooine. So they changed the color to green to better blend in with the sky
At 7:47, I had to slow the speed down to 0.25 and keep hitting pause to figure out who's in the cockpit of the Falcon with Prune Face. Finally I got to the one good frame... it was General Madine.
I'd love to see the mission in which those two took charge of the Falcon, and Vader had to temporarily abandon his own fighter for a TIE Interceptor. :)
@@originaluddite Reminds me of the Robot Chicken skit about Prune Face, LOL. By the way, I wish I'd known two years ago about the easier way to step-frame through RU-vid videos. I only learned it a couple of months ago. Use your < and > keys to go forward or backward one frame at a time. Very handy for catching little details like the Madine who goes by really fast.
2019: The Force is BACKWARDS! The fans won't tire until they've seen the last of Daisy Ridley!!! And Kenner is NOT THERE since Star Wars' toys are no longer selling!!! Boom!
