In many ways the journey of the two soldiers in 1917 reminded me of Frodo and Sam taking the ring to Mordor. This mashup unsurprisingly works extremely well.

Yeah when I rewatched it during quarantine I focused in the pov from the Hobbits and theirs experiences and there's a lot WW1 sensations in it.

The Dead marshes in The Return of the King are inspired by what Tolkien saw on the fields fighting in WW1. My guess is that Mendes is a fan or inspired by Tolkien. Wouldn't be surprising. And thanks for the edit. Well done!
