Episode Notes:
1. There is an infinite shuriken code for this. If you find it difficult, use that until you are better familiar with the enemy patterns.
2. Captured on the Mega SG.
3. This was also released in the arcade(UK) on Sega's Mega-Tech board.
4. I played through this twice for this capture. Having not played this all the way through for 2 years, I don't mind telling you it punished me the first session on normal with no cheats. I still beat it, but I spat out all my lives and ate a ton of damage doing it. By the end, my timing was back, and I was doing a lot better. It still showed me that it has a great challenge curve.
5. You can play this a great many ways today. It's on the Genesis compilations and it is on Nintendo's Switch Online service.

Agreed! It's not as popular but the PS2 Shinobi game was excellent as well. It didn't get high review scores because game journalists complained it was too hard. It was very hard but I don't believe you should give a game low scores based on that.

Shinobi 3 and Shadow Dancer were amazing sequels, but there's something about Revenge of Shinobi that hits the mark. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but like you said there's something magicall about this installment. The locations, the enemies, music, graphics the challenge. I need to plat this again ASAP. Great review and subscribed!

When I was in college back in the mid 1990’s. I had a music class, and my professor asked us to do a presentation on any music composer of our choice. I chose Yuzo Koshiro, and demonstrated both Streets of Rage 2 and the Revenge of Shinobi in class. I got an A on both the presentation and for the course.

My dad was debating between getting a Genesis or a TG-16. He saw a demo of this in person and went with the Genesis on sight. We were coming from the Sega Master System. Pretty glad he made the right choice, this game is incredible and I grew up a Sega kid. Still am, really. As an aside, I'm currently playing Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness. Yuzo Koshiro is still making bangers.

Haha, I had the same decision in christmas 1992. Mom said I could get either a Genesis or SNES, and I remember thumbing thru the (IIRC) JCPenny Christmas catalog for weeks, focusing on the advertisements for both consoles. Went with the Genesis maybe due to Sonic the Hedgehog and am super glad I did. I had no idea that each console was geared more towards certain types of games, and since back then RPGs were definitely not my thing, the genesis definitely was the better console for me.

I think that ROS was the most important title for the Mega Drive at the time of launch because what came before it was less than impressive and as Sega Lord X said the launch lineup of games for the system was quite embarrassingly weak with only Golden Axe coming close to ROS but the importance of ROS cannot be understated.

While i didn't get a Genesis until christmas 1992, so by then there were a ton of console centric games, but early genesis was alot of arcade ports and arcade style games which work great in the arcade where you're not living with the game. But for a console, arcade games can get old fairly fast. A good example of this was the OG pack in game Altered Beast. Loved it in the arcade because of the awesome graphics, but as a genesis game, got old pretty quick. RoS must have been a breath of fresh air for the new to America console and like you said, really justified the 16 bit machine in the late 80s(when at the same time the NES was firing on all cylinders)

Actually, the US Version originally shipped out was 1.0 like the Japanese Mega Drive one. Only the earliest copies released are of this nature and it was quickly changed to the 1.01 over here because of copyright of course. There is nothing on the outside of the game to prove which version you have unless you open the cart and look at the motherboard. I don't believe they are valuable because the differences are almost negligible. Uncommon at the very least though in the hunt to find one. I only know this because I was obsessed with having a US 1.0 copy and did a little too much research into it. I am now the proud owner of the US 1.0

I thought the Round Clear screen and music had a vaguely familiar style as this has the exact same vibe as Streets of Rage (which makes sense as it was developed and composed by the same team). There are some great patches for this game as well that restore the Batman/Spiderman boss completely, add a save feature and also allows ol' Joe to have jumping abilities more akin to Shinobi III.

Adored this game as a kid. The graphics AND gameplay were so cool at the time. This was a long way from a side scrolling platformer like Super Mario World. Major wow factors were the size of the characters, especially giant bosses like the Godzilla. And a weird random cameo from Spider-Man?! (And a strong guy who turns green when you hit him...?) Today, judging graphics will come down to resolution and frame-rates. (My current gaming obsession is "Dave the Diver", which uses a retro-pixel aesthetic as a CHOICE.) Growing up with videogames in the 80s, you saw this progression of what was possible. From the very crude, representational graphics of the Atari 2600 to games on the NES where your character didn't just have to be a square dot. To something like THIS where the art is beautiful.

A friend of mine when he got the game, for some weird reason he got the JPN 1.0 release with John Rambo and morphing Spider-Bat (the funny thing is that the JPN cart could work without issues on USA hardware and EUR as well as it didn't have region lock AND switched the game version based on the used hardware... unlike Shinobi III were it had region lock), a great classic that took me more than 16 years to get it (the same for the console), but as they say, better late than ever. Edit: This game along a few others like Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes made me throw my "Nintendo fanboy" ideals out of the window and value the games regardless of their platform.

I meant version 1.01 was first released in the US. It never came to Japan. Listening to that back it does sound like I'm saying version 1.01 was the first.

Wait…So arcade then Revenge then shinobi 3? Right? I absolutely somehow never new about this one. I’m a dumb dumb…don’t judge me. 😢

@@Des_Zee I was gonna say I know Shadow Dancer goes in there somewhere but it gets pretty confusing. Then of course there are the GG shinobi games from game gear but that's a whole nother story.

I honestly liked Shinobi 3 better, but having just finished a playthrough of this on Switch via NSO, it's still a good game. Fun fact: My first exposure to the game was via the Sega Smash Pack on PC. AKA the unbeatable beta version. I don't think I ever beat it until just recently.

I remember taking delivery of my imported Megadrive back in late 1988 from Japan (I live in the UK) for something like £399 (about £900 equivalent today) and having two games. Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts and Super Shinobi (as the Japanese version was called). That intro blew me away - I had to watch it several times before even starting to play.

Our family was one who got the Genesis quite early when the lineup was relatively lean, but it still had some good stuff -- I distinctly remember our first six games as Altered Beast (of course), Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Tommy Lasorda Baseball, Last Battle, and Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. Revenge and GnG were head and shoulders above the rest, with GA slotting in as a solid 3rd place!

One of the first games I ever played on the system. Slower paced than Shinobi 3, but I prefer the atmosphere of this one. And, of course, the music

I love Shadowdancer more, but ROS is top ten Genesis game for me. When I firsrt heard the music and saw the opening screen I knew I bought an awesome game. Unlike you I never questioned the quality of my 16-bit games. I loved Altered Beast, and I played Rambo III into the ground. I know these aren't games you particularly liked, no big issue. The other thing is that I never bought American or European developed games. I'd had several PCs before moving to a console and had been burned to many times already, so if it wasn't a Japanese arcade game, I avoided it like the plague.

I always preferred Revenge of Shinobi to Ninja Gaiden for one simple reason. The difficulty is much more fair. It’s a tough game but the difficulty rarely feels cheap versus NG which had some absolutely brutal and unforgiving deaths with enemy placement.

This was a game that Sega never put on PS2 and PS3 compilations, unlike Shinobi 3. I had already had a copy of Shadow Dancer, and a near complete Shinobi 3 (no manual, no problem), there was only one way to take care of the Revenge of Shinobi problem I was having, I bought the damned thing off of Ebay. At that point, my problem was solved.

Revenge - delightfully challenging, not as hard as Castlevania, but you have to plan your next move or fall into a pit or get overwhelmed until you lose a life Shadow Dancer - perfect controls allow you to pull off tight strategies that requirements split second attacks and jumps. The challenge never feels cheap even at top difficulty III - least challenging even at highest difficulty, but the extra moves and score bonuses makes it fun to pick up and play anytime All 3 have classic soundtracks

Meanwhile, my first game I got after the first year of having a Genesis (other than the pack in) was…. Onslaught. Ugh. I wish I got this instead, but that was the hand I was dealt. I still have never played any Shinobi game, but I suffered through Onslaught because I had no choice, this must have been freaking amazing by comparison!

I remember having this and completing it. I had the first release I believe as I remember spiderman and batman and thinking wtf? Can they do that? Sega lord.. Not sure if you've done before, but can we get a video on both versions of Eternal Champions? More so the CD version? Keep up the great work!

I prefer Revenge of Shinobi over 3 and Shadow Dancer. Though they are all great but that slower gameplay of 2 makes it more of a pick of a play type game. Sometimes you don't want high octane. There's a lot of atmosphere and charm like you mentioned too. It has soul! But all are top tier!

I got a Sega Genesis for Christmas in 1989 too. It was the greatest Christmas present I ever received. My favorite games on the system are Rambo III, Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf and Streets Of Rage 2. Some of my favorite memories are of my Brother, friends and I playing Sega Genesis games late into the night on weekends.

Just one small correction: v1.00 of the game did in fact come to North America. My copy of Revenge of Shinobi has the Rambo clones on state 3 complete with mullets instead of bald heads.
