That reptile boss was based on Godzilla but it was missing the spines and was only a fraction of the size of the actual one. That being said, Sega seemed to have no problem putting Mechagodzilla in Shinobi III.

Cool video, man! I can say with 100% certainty, that we, in the USA, received REV00 (which, is a World ROM), so its the same between regions (you can get a 3 region versions by bridging USA/JPN/EUR in your Genesis.) I bought my copy at launch, from Toys R Us (cost me $67 on 12/30/1989). I bought it , along with the Sega Power Base Convertor ($34.99). So I could play some original Shinobi on my Genesis too. :)

Oh, and here is my original receipt , for Revenge of Shinobi, and Power Base Convertor, from 12/30/1989, from Toys R Us www.videogameobsession.com/photodump/NA/Receipts/Receipt-1989-12-30_GEN_RevengeOfShinobi_Sega_Power_Base_Converter-BOX-vgo.png There are a few other games with major differences between revisions. Another is Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. REV00 Has his Thriller music play in the graveyard levels, during the dace attacks, which is how it should be. Later versions would remove it, along with some other fhnanges. Mystic Defender REV00 leaves a naked woman end boss, at the end of the game. And finally Super Monaco GP has some signs removed from REV00 to REV01.. The ones that look like Marlboro logos. They also slowed down the frame rate, to try and make the control better... It didn't work. Stick with 00! _:)

Haha, nice. Yeah, enough people have posted here that they got the game when it was new and it had Batman that it definitely seems it did hit the US. Guess Sega Retro is wrong on that one.

The original is the only version I have played/beaten. I remember hearing about the different versions a few years back, and TODAY (May, 2 2024), watching this video, is the first time I have ever seen the alternate bosses. I remember my sibling and I being giddy about the bosses way back in the 90s. It was definitely a formative memory as a gamer.

👍... mine too. I finally see how Rev 0 turned out the way that it did! Joe mentioned it.... Sega artists and programmers BARELY altered all of the mentioned characters and bosses. Before they acquired the Spider-Man license, changed the blue in his costume to black. Batman has a blue face (NES-style?), Godzilla had his plates removed and shoots orange fire. Arnie resemblence isnt't as close as the bosses' + the Terminator mode is quite different; Reminds me of Metallo from Superman. Though not mentioned anywhere in the game, Sega did have a license for Rambo games since the Master System days. This video was really well done, which is typical for Joe D. Oh, and Joey Pink might actually approve of Pink Bodysuit-Man.... Starman from NES Pro Wrestling was quite popular 👍

I have the 1st version with Rambo, Spider-Man, batman, etc. I remember there was also a secret code you could do where if u put in any other game in the genesis, removed the game while the system was still on, then insert the revenge of shinobi game, hit reset and you’d get the super shinobi title screen

The first edition you covered definitely came out in the US. A couple of my buddies had it and I played it all the time and thought the exact same thing about those heroes (Rambo, Terminator, Spider-Man & Batman. I eventually got the game with the SEGA CD combo. The first thing I noticed was Spider-Man & Batman were missing. I can’t remember if Godzilla had changed. Also, if you powered on your Genesis console then removed the cartridge at the SEGA logo then put the cartridge back in the title screen would say Super Shinobi.

I had the version with Rambo, black n red Spider-Man/Batman and Godzilla. There was no copyrights in the beginning, but there was a spider-man copyright found in the manual. In a related note, any new rerelease of the Arcade Shinobi removes the Marilyn Monroe posters from the first stage, and changes the red/blue colors of the spider-man wall enemies that are also on the first stage.

Yeah, I believe the emulator is basically doing PSG sound instead of the FM synth because of a time crunch or something.

Excellent video! Glad you dove down into the weeds and documented on this one. Years ago when I was heavily into cart collecting, I accumulated 6 or 7 carts of this game. I was aware there were several revisions and was determined to find out if I had an original release. I played each of them with a game genie and the code for the Spiderman level (6-3). Made sure he was the correct colors and when I beat him, made sure the real Batman was next. I also put in codes for the Terminator level (4-3) and the Godzilla level (7-3) just to make sure. Luckily one of those carts was an original. That's the one I kept for my collection. Now I need to beat the game proper. Thanks for the inspiration! Anybody seen Sega?? Anybody know why Sega did Rambo, Spiderman, Batman, the Terminator and Godzilla?

The original revision was released in North America (Rambo, Spider-man/Batman and Godzilla). I had it. In fact, I never knew the game got revised until I got internet access in 1995. This game has always been my all time favorite action platform only to be tied with Turrican 2 for the Amiga 500 (it's 16-bit computer from 1987 by Commodore). As a kid in 1989 thru 92, I played this game soooo much that I use to be able to beat it without ever losing a life and without using magic (except for the 2nd boss). I can still beat it without using any continues but I use magic because... why not? The magic is really cool. The music for Revenge of Shinobi is some of my all time favorite music in a game. Same composer did the Streets of Rage games which is just as good as ROS.

It might be a Mandela Effect thing, but I distinctly recall seeing Spiderman turn into Batman in my copy. My mom and dad got me a Genesis around Christmas time - I remember we went to a K-B Toys to buy it - and Revenge of Shinobi was one of the two games we got along with the pack-in, Altered Beast

One of my favourite games of all time. We got it with our Mega Drive in the Mega Games 2 cart that were out here in the UK. Those collections like the 6-Pak are basically essential purchases. That Dreamcast version sounds shocking. Almost like someone tried to make the music play through some 80s Tiger LCD game. Have you got the Data Discs vinyl soundtrack of Revenge of Shinobi? it is extremely lovely to listen to.

I’m certain Rev 0 was released in the US, because I seem to have a copy. After watching your video, I played all the way through level 6 just to be sure, and yep… Spider-Man has the black suit and turns into Batman.

I owned revision 0 when it was originally released in the 🇺🇸. I remember getting the 6-Pak later and being appalled that Rambo was changed to a generic construction worker.

It definitely came out in the U.S. I never knew this was even in doubt, till now?! My cousin owned it at the game's launch & I played through it frequently for years. One of my all-time favorite Genesis games. Shinobi 3 has it beat in the gameplay & gore, but RoS still has an edge with it's superior soundtrack 👍.

Revision 00 is the most complete one, because it has a complete credit roll when you get the good ending. It was cut in all versions outside of Japan.

I hate to admit that I have never played a Shinobi game outside of the PS2 release. Even when I was a kid who liked Ninjas and owned a Genesis... I never really even saw the game for sale and none of my friends owned it. I need to change that.

I am 100 percent sure the first version of shinobi came out in the US. My friend had a copy and he bought the system and game a couple months after release. We played the game probably a thousand times and remember all the characters.

The first edition did come out in the US I had it. Addtionally the rom is also the jp version. Just change the region and it changes to The Super Shinobi.

I remember buying the Sega Smash Pack on the Dreamcast years ago. I was so excited to have all those Genesis in one disc. And then I played it, and I was so pissed with how terrible the sound was on all of the Genesis games. They sounded like they were being played on the Master System.

The idea was great if you ask me... however thanks to bogus audio emulation, instead we had either laughs or any negative reaction to it, not to mention that the Dreamcast re-release was the final official time the game had Spider-Man.

They are kunai, the west just doesn't care about these minor terminologies, just like how they would refer to a shuriken as a ninja star. Funny, they should have kept the red colored fire breath in the later revision, changing it in blue actually reinforces the Godzilla likeness since it's atomic breath is bluish to begin with, or maybe they did that intentionally as a compromise The double jump is perhaps the hardest part of the game to master, the timing is very precise to execute, and Shinobi 3 had the same issues

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Mortal Kombat use green for blood back in the day before the blood code came out? Infact quite a few games used this method in the early days if my memory serves me right. It could explain why the terminator changes green before he ultimately turns to the machine, and would also explain why the torn organic tissue was also colored green after the transformation.

I agree with the game's double jump and other points here. It may be a classic no doubt, but bits like that kill the mood for me whenever I play it. Also, thanks for that ninja magic where you can replenish your energy, never knew that.

First versions of Revenge of Shinobi, Black suit Spider-Man and Batman, second revisions and later of Shinobi is Spider-Man and the Bat formed Gremlin, yeah they didn’t add the Green Goblin so yet the next one is the pink Spider-Man and the Bat formed Gremlin again. Sure then later on they might put another or just big Spider character from the Goon Squad and probably replaced the Gremlin with Batman or stick with the Gremlin. First Terminator and Rambo and the Hulk, and even Godzilla. The a skeleton formed dinosaur throwing fire, well what is next MechaGodzilla or King Kong with a giant flame thrower? Yeah seeing King Kong with a giant flame thrower might be a future revision.

Yep, they sure did Joe. They also did arcade AfterBurner 2 and Galaxy Force 2 for 3DS! There were some 3-D versions of some Genesis classics as well, such as Altered Beast and Streets of Rage (2, I believe) 👍

This is one of those games that I want to love but just absolutely suck at. It's easily the hardest of the Genesis trilogy, if not the Shinobi series in general. And I find it a bit strange that throughout all of the revisions, they never addressed the oddly specific timing of the double jump. I get that requires more effort than a simple sprite swap, but surely they had the time to implement it.

The reason the dreamcast collection has abysmal sound emulation is because the devs behind the emulator had such an awful time they decided to even PUT IN THE DISC INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PIRATE THEIR EMULATOR! YEEESH

Wow I'm surprised that this guy got his source wrong. The true original was the one that had Rambo, Spiderman, batman godzill. Also, when you first power up the game it goes straight to the sega logo sign. You can tell if you have the "so called updated version" when you power up the game the copyright appears first then the sega logo. I know this cus I have the original!

Bad news, man. Your videos do NOT show up in my sub feed. If it wasn't for Twitter, I would have never known that this video existed. Hey, I'm not gonna kink-shame nuns either, ha ha. My buddy had a Genesis at launch and got this game upon its release, and I was a HUGE Spider-Man fan (still am), and thought it was the coolest shit ever to see him in this game. Batman, too. Press A, B and C as fast as you can to get unlimited shurikens? I've never heard that before. Okay, so I'm not the only one who thinks that the "new Batman" looks like Devilman. Good god, that Dreamcast sound emulation sounds as if it was on the GBA! Ugly. I love The Revenge of Shinobi, so there was a lot to learn in this one!

Guess I have the Rev 4 ROM as my ROM comes from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Collection on Steam. While it Does suck. It's still one of my favorite Genesis games ever

Very weird for sega retro to put false information up. I’ve owned the original North American version for years and yes it is authentic and it has black and red Spider-Man with Batman, Rambo and Godzilla. There are plenty of carts out there.

You have to wonder how they got away with blatant copyright infringement in the first place. I know video games constantly lift things here and there, but they're just totally engaging in intellectual property theft. Sure, they removed the backplates from Godzilla, but that's unmistakably his face. I forget which era Godzilla that was, someone will probably point that out. Though they did appear to get caught in the long term.

It looks more like Heisei-era Godzilla to me. But copyright law is different is Asia than here. Hard to say for sure if they got formal cease-and-desists, but in that 2003 interview (linked in the description) with Ohba, he definitely acknowledges that they did that.

Their copyright law completely confuses me, and for the sake of sanity I'm just calling it a "as long as you don't get caught" thing. Though I'm guessing they were able to get away with the Western "homages" more so than Japanese ones.

By putting up a Copyright at the bottom of the title screen, so in the eyes of Marvel and DC it wouldn't look like straight up plagiarism (although this was a case where Ohba drew a few concepts based on these western characters, hoping his character designers would pick up the slack and flesh out the design more, but they didn't and just called it a day) Oh, and Sega at the time did have the license to use Spiderman, so they didn't have to worry about that character at least
