Olympic National Park is temporarily closed as Washington, the US, and the world work to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We filmed this series in early January and are currently at home practicing social distancing. We hope you and your community of friends and family are staying healthy as we work to #flattenthecurve.

Great series! I found your videos while doing research for a 7 min talk at work, on any topic I want, and I picked the Siletzia & Olympic Mtns story because it is as cool as any geology story. It's a perfect story for Seattle residents because we can see the Olympics from the street, yet pretty much no one has heard of Siltzia. Thanks for the great presentations!

You've literally told me that you're just considering production costs: not researching, scripting, not post-production, not overheads, not capital and equipment costs, not communicating with viewers and various admin. There are 11 staff names in their video credits. It's clear that a number of them are multi-functional in the team. And there will be at least one un-named other, I suppose, doing admin. Car commercials are nowhere near as insidious as fast/junk food commercials, particularly high-sugar breakfast cereals. You only buy a car if you need one, or have that much money burning a hole in your pocket, and it's easier with a single big-ticket item to throw away all the baggage you've picked and let something like Consumer Reports tell you what's best for your particular use case. Also, used cars are plentiful if you are willing to trade prestige for cash in your pocket, so you don't even have to choose solely from what's being made right now. That said, I also don't want a seven and a half minute car commercial masquerading as SciShow. Had it been 30 seconds about the car and 7 minutes of SciShow, I'd have been fine with it.

I feel the same, but at the same time I don't blame them. If sponsoring from a car manufacturer means you can afford content you might not ever get to make otherwise, it's a gamble on whether the quality or intent of that content is good enough to offset the "selling out" or "compromising" from that sponsor. Is it worth promoting a major cause of modern pollution to possibly get more people interested and curious in science? I would be tempted to say yes, but it's not a simple call to make.
@octopus44445
@octopus44445 4 года назад
Yeah I don't doubt that it was a significant sponsorship, and if these occasionally existing is what it takes for the good parts of scishow to exist, then that's better than no scishow. But it made the actual content of this video hard to pay attention to and seemed completely unnecessary considering all the important visuals were the usual infographics and stock-looking footage, anyway. I think it bothers me more than anything else that is not only a blatant commercial, but in particular a commercial talking up a large gas powered vehicle while not talking about the downside to large vehicle in a way that feels totally contrary the brand of scishow.

They run on time whether they've got 1 passenger, a full load, or none. So that the one on the other side of the river has somewhere to dock when they come across. @jdwelborn

@OtakuUnitedStudio
@OtakuUnitedStudio 4 года назад
@@jdwelborn Ok, cross the sound then. But I've been on ferries before; they don't tend to have just one ship at each crossing because it's inefficient. They tend to leave at the same time because there's really only mooring for one ship, and there are probably people who want to come back across from the other side. Maybe it works differently there, though. And while they may not specifically need a Subaru to drive on a dirt road, they were probably required to say they did by Subaru when they promised to fund the channel. Car manufacturers tend to require fairly aggressive product placement. I don't know exactly WHY they chose to allow Subaru to sponsor them, but I can almost guarantee the ham-handedness of it was a contractual requirement.
