The fact that the villain is just called "Culture" is hilarious to me. I work at a public library, and there is a nasty woman who comes in constantly and makes Instagram reels where she's actively hiding our children's books in hard to find places because she disagrees with them. I now keep track of her posts so that I'll know where to look when she hides our books, and she recently did a sponsored reel about this publishing company. "Elephants and Not Birds" and other transphobic children's books, are always hilarious to me because they're so at odds with the philosophy of other children's books. Like what kids would want to read about how: - You CAN'T change yourself. - Your appearance on the outside DOES define your inner world. - You DON'T have to accept people who are different. - DON'T be who you feel like you are inside. etc.
@nostaldec4705
@nostaldec4705 Год назад
I watched a reading of it, and it was absolute trash, but about the 'your appearance defines your inner world' thing. The reason why Kevin the elephant wants to become a bird is because he likes to sing, but even after he gives up wanting to be a bird, he accepts that it's okay to be an elephant and sing, no longer feeling pressured to only conform to elephant stereotypes. Even so, it was still a shit book.
@SirThopas3

@@nostaldec4705 So does that mean the book is inadvertently promoting things like cross-dressing and non-gender conforming activities? Holy crap, I just realized how much Horton Hatches the Egg parallels giving up your child, then wanting them back when it's convenient for you. Mazie the lazy bird is tired of sitting on her egg, so she asks Horton to do it for her (giving your child away because you don't want to take care of a baby), then wants her baby back once the egg hatches (wanting your child back once he's all grown up and can take care of himself), but the elephant bird baby wants to be with Horton, the one who suffered to bring him into this world ("You're not my mom! So… serious question: why are these people so opposed to adopting children into gay partnerships when there aren’t enough straight couples that are able to adopt all these kids that they supposedly care about so much that they believe that it’s wrong to abort an unwanted pregnancy? Because to them a child is better off dead than raised with "non-christian" values. Not even an exaggeration in a lot of cases. They think having a queer couple as parents would corrupt the children's souls and doom them to Hell. Their ideal outcome is all the queer people stop being queer, get straight married and then adopt a couple of kids on top of birthing a few. That and that unmarried women stop accessing birth control and abortion and instead find christ and swear off pre-marital sex, as they seem to view unmarried mothers apparently popping out kids willy nilly because they can't keep their legs closed as the cause of almost all cases of neglect, ab*se and poverty.

Maybe this is just me, but I really do not vibe with the villainized vulture. Vultures are important parts of our ecosystems because they can eat rotting carcasses to manage the development of diseases. There is also the reoccurring problem of using animals for morality tales or even feel good messages of tolerance. Because the lion cannot just lie down with the lamb and not dissolve into conflict in real life. That is why I like the Lackadaisy webcomic which just sticks with anthropomorphic cats for its characters and it is just an entertaining story. I also am peeved at the Freedom Day book because it could have subverted antisemitic stereotypes. Not the book itself, mind you. What I mean is foxes in folklore are tricksters but not deceivers. I could easily envision a story of a fox magician who those in power scapegoat for a crisis because they claim he has cursed the townspeople or something like that. But I am not Jewish so take that with a grain of salt.

I would say kids don't understand gender...as in the construct of gender. But they understand what they like and what they don't like, how they wish to be seen and how they don't wish to be seen, and how they prefer to be referred to, which are all tied into our concept of gender. Then they learn the words for what they're feeling later on. I'm 32 years old and much older than the concept of gender fluidity, but in elementary school I understood that I mostly enjoyed being a girl but didn't like the stereotypes and expectations that went along with it. When I was cast in a male role in the school musical in elementary school, I knew I felt a thrill I had never felt before and enjoyed every minute of it, but also knew that I didn't want to take on that role full time and live as a boy. I knew that I never really considered gender at all when it came to finding friends, even in the days of "cooties". Once I heard about gender fluidity, I realized there was a word for my experience with gender.

I actually watched a video where somebody reviewed 'paws off my cannon' and its so much worse. Basically the main mushroom village is shown to be made up of all kinds of different animal species, while the bad guys are all portrayed as hyenas. The hyenas are not hunters but bad guys who come from far away to steal the villages food. And while the bunny wants to do gun control, the gorilla is basically like 'f*ck that, lets shoot them with our right to have guns' and his way is proven correct. The fact that all the bad guys are a single race that comes from far away, I do think that it might also be an allegory for minorities/migrants. That the book has the message about these different people who come from far away to steal our things and do bad and we need to be allowed our guns to shoot them.

What's tough about writing for children is taking into consideration what your intended reader knows and doesn't know. I think like you said, the low word counts can attract amateur writers who are not interested in honing their craft. Instead they expect not to have to work at it, they expect it to be easy. So we get what looks like parodies of good children's books that betray the authors' lack of understanding of what children know/don't know and how they think. A signature bad children's writer move, that most of these share (I'm guessing), is to assume children have adult knowledge, or to not be good at putting yourself in a child's shoes. Like the Matt Walsh one about transphobia that makes it glaringly obvious he put no thought into how children would actually perceive the story. His point was not to make a story for children. His point was to make a transphobic caricature to try to weaponize children against trans people, as if they were missiles, and it failed, because he didn't understand how children work.
@dinosaysrawr

....because understanding how children work would require EMPATHY, which Matt Walsh in particular is proud to not possess in any capacity.
@gregjayonnaise8314
@gregjayonnaise8314 Год назад
I agree! I think where a lot of conservative kids’ books fail is that the books don’t care about the children’s emotions in reaction to the story. Stories are meant to teach us messages of caution and action: it’s a push and pull to inform children how to act in a theoretical situation. But these books are more concerned with trying to translate the complex hangups of adults into something that kids MUST care about. These books only seem to deal with stories about vague concepts that are not stuff that kids would understand completely. After all, what young child cares about abortion, or trans rights? These books are meant to bring up scenarios that a child likely hasn’t confronted to instill intolerance as early as possible. It’s for the parents to feel like they’re fighting some form of corruption, not for the child to have a pleasant experience.

His entire childhood he's been stronger, and rougher then the girls. Why? Probably because biologically we all start as females in the womb, and through the expression -- and reception -- of hormones causes each of us to grow our secondary sexual characteristics. My middle child shared a womb with his cis male brother and there's a certain amount of cross contamination. Doesn't matter though. My middle child is a teenager now, and I listen to his experience and his life. This isn't a passing fade, but it is something that is near impossible to understand and comprehend unless you know someone that has experienced total and lifelong gender dysphoria.
