I'm shocked that a book-focused MLM actually managed to make any headway. The ones I've seen in the past have all failed--and I always assumed it was because part of the MLM model seems to be finding some product you can grossly overcharge for without it being obvious to the consumer what the markup is. Books make that difficult, but obviously not impossible. For what it's worth, I'm sure you're right on the rebranding. This seems to be a very common tactic with all but the powerhouse MLMs where the name recognition just barely outweighs the shady reputation.

This makes me so sad because I loved Usborne books as a kid and my daughter loves them now, and I know people who work there as writers/editors etc who are great. I feel like the MLM part is a bit less of a thing in the UK though? I've only ever bought their books from book shops, although I have sometimes seen them at school fairs. I wish they would ditch the shady side of their business but I guess if it makes so much money they never will 😭

And I totally agree, they renamed themselves in order to avoid the bad press gathering around them. We're onto them, and they tried to create a big sense of mystery around the rebranding announcement.

@@meganholley9352 agree it it a really naff name. not rebranded in UK but here USborne books are seen as quality child learning resources - though US would get different products I guess, spellings at least. But they also sell in book shops, my sister is a rep and sometimes buys at discount bookshops to add to her inventory!

Off topic but did you know miss Dolly saved a kids life? She was filming a Christmas special for Netflix and her little girl costar wasn’t paying attention and was almost hit by a car till Dolly pulled her out of the way (dressed as an angel no less lol)

Scholastic does the vast majority of school book fairs in Canada, too, for the record. I'm now raising my daughter on the completely opposite side of the country from where I grew up and we've both only seen Scholastic book fairs and order catalogues.

I find this type of company extra predatory. Parents want what’s best for their children, and distributors are great at convincing them these expensive books will provide the best education! Since postpartum depression and anxiety is so common, they’re targeting a very vulnerable community

Dolly Parton doesn't send books to my area and it makes me sad every time I hear people talk about her book program. I've tried so many times, never available in my area. I wind up throwing books in the cart for my kids when I'm thrifting my own books, and we've found a secondhand book store in the area that accepts trades for store credit, and will accept candy for store credit for a short period after Halloween.

When I first tried to sign my little guy up, Dolly's book program wasn't in my area, either. About a year later, I received an email telling me that they had expanded to our area, so he started getting books when he was 2&1/2. Don't give up, hopefully they'll expand to your area soon as well!

Still thrifting books, though now half of them go into the Little Free Library my older two rebuilt at their school. My oldest rebuilt it as a service project, and we maintain and keep it stocked as community service.

It’s very strange that I happened upon this video, because about a year or so ago former work colleague tried to get me to buy books from her and I believe it was Usborne books. I had no idea it was an MLM but I decided not to buy from her as I am a big reader and buy books from Amazon or used book stores for the most part. It was so out of the blue that I found it suspicious as I hadn’t been in contact with her for years and she was verrrry pushy about me ordering from her. Which was weird. I hate MLMs, they are exploitative. Thank you for selling your books honestly. I will order your books because my son is obsessed with animal rescues and I love that you donate to them.

I know this is video was posted a year ago, but I wanted to explain a bit. I used to be part of the Usborne Books And More (UBAM) MLM. I dropped out a very long time ago. Anyway, Usborne is a publishing company in the UK. UBAM was the American MLM company only. When Peter Usborne passed away, UBAM had to stop using the name Usborne. Hence, Paper Pie rebrand. They still sell the Usborne books, but they can no longer claim to he part of Usborne. Im assuming his heirs either wanted distance from the name so they weren't connected to the predatory MLM, or wanted too much to use the nane. Either way, makes no difference. Now I will say the books are amazing in quality and such, but i dont like the MLM model. And you cant buy the books in the US without going through Paper Pie (at least you aren't supposed to be able to). Now, you're right that we weren't required to have inventory, but you make more if you do fairs and such which requires you to have inventory. The other part of it is that you can only sell to individuals unless you joined the Educational division which allows you to sell to schools and businesses. So there's more of a rundown on why the name changed and such.

Yes they rebranded in US, in UK still Usborne books ( Ithink it is UK started company?) The books are mostly good quality, but I guess there are always some bad ones. My sister is a rep, nearly 20 years now. But only ever had one or 2 recruits, so more focussed on sales. I am sure there are some big recruiters but my sister has not been under pressures like that. I still challenge her about how many hours for small amounts, but her focus has mostly been fetes and school/playgroups/ etc. She did house parties in her early days, and did venture to online during lockdown, but not in the aggressive way and she doesn't do thebaby shower or fundraiser online parties i think you covered last time. SHe enjoys it and says that since not into recruiting or pressured to it is 'not really' an mlm.

I’m concerned that this is going to corner the teacher market. Teachers being each other’s downlines, selling to parents and selling to each other for classroom materials is a really big glaring concern to me. Teachers already don’t have money and have to pay for their supplies out of pocket and this looks like a prime predator to exploit this problem.

We have our own library in our 55+ Active Community here where we live, and they don't have enough children's books for the grand kids that come stay during the summer/holidays/spring break, so I am going to look into donating them there.
