My father was the developer of this starter. I recounted the story as best I could in the book "Norbert Riedel - Ein Ingenieursleben", especially the encounter with the Americans after the Second World War.
This engine had a postwar life in communist East Germany where it was developed into the powerplant for the IFA (later MZ) BK350 motorcycle. Not entirely surprising when you realize that Norbert Riedel was a motorcycle engineer both before and after the war (though having settled in West Germany after WW2, he would not have been involved with the design of the BK350).
@jasonclouse3080 I think it's because the -200 has the thin cigar nacelles, that just tell all the other 737 pilots that you have the oldest, inefficient jet, the cockpit isn't any better...
Yunkers would have been the correct pronounciation because our J is pronounced like your Y. Sidenote/tip: theses days google translator is good enough with german pronunciacions. Type in the german word, set it to german at the top and then press the little loudspeaker icon. Greetings from Germany🙂
There is and was no Mesherschmitt! It's always been a Messerschmitt! You say "what a mess", not "what a mesh", right? So it should be possible to say Messerschmitt as well.
