so many times I've seen plumbers or so-called plumbers use thread protectors as couplings and they leak I've come up with a way to repair that I cut the thread protector in half and install a union
@sho-meaccountability2674
@sho-meaccountability2674 Год назад
@@ricklee827 I have done that as well. Provided you have the room and movement to do so and can do it without marring the threads. That's tough sometimes. Best way to fix them is to tell people that work for me that it's grounds for firing! Its absolutely unacceptable and made clear far before they have a chance to do so.

I installed a high pressure air line supply hose with stainless steel fittings. The instructions stated to use Teflon tape then apply liquid thread sealant. No leaks with 150 psi. I always use that same approach now any time I use Teflon tape.

I am a DOT gas pipeline inspector... I would fail you on any inspection because by requirements you are to ONLY follow the manufacturer PROCEDURE. Example is blue monster tape. It states DO NOT USE WITH PIPE SEALANT. Rector seal #5 states DO NOT USE WITH ANY Pipe TAPE. I have found thousands of leaks over my career and MOST of them are from plumbers NOT following the manufacturer procedures.

Fitting should screw on 3 1/2 turns by hand…then a final tightening with a wrench. Stainless pipe we always used tape and some pecker snot on top…especially a water line. Also left first two threads bare as they don’t do the sealing anyways. Also no lead based snot on hydraulics…either tape or Teflon sealant….or both t&t.

Start at the tip, leave the bottom two threads untaped, wrap up and leave a tail. Once the connections done, pull on the tail and it will be a clean cut at the hub of the fitting.

My old instructor taught me some pretty good you work with a Teflon tape you know that it's going to stop a water leak and the only way you can really actually tell that is if you stretch it out and arms length cross your chest and halfway through if it snaps it's a bad Teflon if you do it I mean you can't rip it, but if you really just slowly stretch it out and it's 3/4 or better you're on the right track fella

@jokerr2289 Год назад
@@jakekennedy9161 what tape are you using. When I went through my apprenticeship, we were taught not to tape gas pipe for that reason. It's also just overkill. You can seal threaded pipe to hold a test by hand with some pipe dope (to lubricate, not seal). I've personally never heard of thread tape approved for gas line, but i wouldn't trust in anyway to be honest. A risk that doesn't need to be taken in my opinion. In Ohio, I've seen inspector look at thread tape and instantly fail a water heater inspection. They never asked if the tape was approved for gas lines.
