UPDATED TUTORIAL: • UPDATED: The RIGHT Way...
In this tutorial, I show you the PROPER way to replace the save batteries in your Gameboy and Gameboy Color game cartridges. There's a lot of misinformation and just plain awful so-called "tutorials" out there for this process already, so I decided to do my own and set the record straight once and for all.
I've got A LOT more Gameboy stuff on the way! :) I just needed to get this tutorial out of the way first. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

I recommend introducing fresh solder to the original solder beforehand, it's going to help with making it liquid way quicker cause You also introduce flux with the solder :) Also with a wick I always clean off the old solder.The problem with heating the solder for so long as You do is burning up all the flux which makes the solder less liquid. So I recommend having some extra flux at hand or a wick can also help in removing excess solder. Also tinning the tip of Your soldering iron helps for a cleaner result in general, but also using some alcohol to clean the tabs afterwards ensures You are left with nice clean pcb and joints. Thank You for making this video. Those solder less videos are really hard to watch!

Yeah I Agree, It's really PAINFUL to watch videos that explain how to fix something without having to use a fucking solder gun. I can't stand NON-solder people and there need to just fix a ridiculously simple solution with a single piece of tape. And can you believe, that it works too? HOW INFURIATING.
@scramblesthedeathdealer
@scramblesthedeathdealer 4 года назад
@@chuckstieg It works, til they drop their game on the sidewalk and something gets knocked loose inside the cartridge.
@chuckstieg
@chuckstieg 4 года назад
@@scramblesthedeathdealer WRONG, with proper application of tape that shit closes up pretty tight. Nothing is moving around at all, no matter what happens to it. It's going to literally shatter from being dropped before the tape & battery position are compromised. Some people just get such a fucking hard-on from soldering anything they can't handle a more efficient and easier solution existing than soldering. I bet you solder your kid's report cards to your refrigerator too huh? magnets are so impractical.

"The best way I've found to replace Gameboy Cart Batteries" would be a better title, as the soldering technique leaves a bit to be desired. No flux, pads not cleaned/wicked, tinning the new battery unnecessarily, soldering temp too low, too much solder, holding the iron on the joint too long, etc etc. Not insulting you, just pointing out some areas to work on and improve for future efforts.. Also, if the battery is not entirely dead and there are some save games still on the game, solder/clip in a battery in parallel to keep the save games until the old battery is replaced, then remove temp battery. A battery in parallel is safe and should not damage anything, as the voltage remains the same.

A couple tips: Nintendo’s PCBs are typically pretty robust but rotating the battery off of the pad that’s not fully melted like we see here on Link’s Awakening can tear pads off weaker PCBs. It’s best practice to just hold in place and nudge it every now and then until it releases completely. On that note, you almost seem to be painting heat into the solder joints on a few of these. While it may feel like this is heating more evenly and spreading it around, heat conducts through the solder and metal well enough that you’d be better served by just flattening the iron for contacting the maximum surface area and then adding solder to bridge to places that aren’t readily melting. I use ceramic-tile drink coasters as a work surface since I don’t want to melt my ESD mat or heat it inside a plastic shell. Just a suggestion. :)

I've been able to fit 2025s in all carts, just need to trim the leads a bit. I'm guilty of popping the top tab off the old battery with a screwdriver before desoldering. Gives me more control and I don't need to use tweezers. At this point I always replace the battery unless it's obviously been done recently and correctly. Great video.

@@KyleAwsm I still desolder the old and solder the new one in, I just pop the tab off first. The welds are usually fairly weak. It's a lot easier to pull it off the board when the other side isn't holding it down.

8:45 and that's why you use flux :P also using a hotter iron and/or removing the old (probably lead free) solder should prevent the tip dragging through molasses and let you actually melt the stuff. both your pads/traces and battery will thank you for being roasted slightly hotter for a way shorter time than trying to melt it halfway for ages.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 7 месяцев назад
Game Boy games were never lead free. Nintendo didn’t go RoHS-compliant until the Wii.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 7 месяцев назад
The factory flux is spent or cleaned off and the solder is also oxidized. Addinf fresh solder/flux will renew the factory solder but then you may have a bit too much. Any contaminates will float to the surface and typically comes off with your soldering iron tip after reflowing with flux and a clean tip.

I've just recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying your tutorials. I especially appreciate how methodically and thoroughly you present them. I have a recommendation for a future topic. Consider producing a soldering tutorial for an absolute beginner. This is one of those skills that many people are proficient at, but opinions on 'correct' procedure vary. The biggest benefit seems to be experience. I've never even held a soldering iron before and am too timid to even attempt a 'simple' battery repair without more tips. Anyway, thanks for producing such enjoyable content. Keep up the good work!

I agree with some of the other comments. You use wayyy too much solder here, If I used that much I would wick it back up before soldering the new battery back in place. I appreciate your efforts of trying to teach proper handling of electronics, however, gameboy carts are really resilient. They're a great way to learn, and if you want to do the job with no tools/minimal effort, thats on you. I've "tape repaired" numerous batteries before I felt comfortable soldering them in place. To be honest, I usually just use a hot iron, heat the solder and pop the tabs off, and just use the existing solder. As long as your tip is tinned and your iron is hot it should be almost effortless. Just seems like an unnecessarily long video to cover something that could be covered in a few minutes. As others have mentioned if you really wanted to show the "BEST WAY" that would be temporarily affixing another battery to preserve saves which may be in place already. Still, its good to show better practices for those who want to learn them instead of brute forcing the old tabs off and just taping back into place.

I'm really glad i'm not the only one that got irritated over the way people were replacing batteries, the original ifixit guide for replacing the battery used a knife to tear off the tabs, and some black tape to hold the new battery in place, it irritated me enough to write my own ifixit guide on how to actually replace it the right way.

Most videos mention that you should use a soldering iron, but many people do not have a solder or the necessary skills to operate it like this. That is the reason why there are many videos of using screwdrivers to pry off the weld points from the battery. It simply isn't feasible for some people. Especially a little kid trying to revive "his dad's old game" and things like that.

So what's a good soldering iron? Any soldering tutorials you recommend?

I've got the Hakko FX-888D, which was about $100. But I started with a basic single temp Weller iron. As for tutorials, just watch a ton of them on here. People have all sorts of techniques. So absorb as much of just everything out there as you can, keeping a mental list of good and bad techniques. Also read comment sections for corrections by others. I've had a few helpful corrections in the comments of my own videos. Hope this helps!

So I went to a retro shop and paid to change the batteries on my Pokémon silver game. The battery didn’t work and it cost $25. For $27 I got ten batteries and a soldering kit. Not to mention I successfully changed the batteries on two Pokémon games. The video was a great help.

will any soldering iron and solder work? never really used one, do you have a cheaper recommendation for soldering iron and solder?

How long until it needs another battery change??? What’s the lifespan of that replacement batter? Thanks and sweet tutorial!

7:31 - Careful! That might’ve shorted positive and negative since the tweezers look like they were touching (or close to touching) the wall of the battery and the bottom tab.

i mean...i tend to see lots of tutorials on replacing the battery...and good job on this tutorial as well...but it does not solve the main issue that people have...which is making your old save data work again...and there is actually no method to recover your old save data...for example if i complete a game and the battery dies, you can do this tutorial, replace it and then complete the game again, however if you put in a lot of work on that one save file...you might as well just not play at all...because its too much work that you've put into in that one save file...pokemon is a great example, and most of that work you just cannot replicate, like transferring pokemons from one game to another etc.

Unfortunately, because of the nature of how SRAM and other forms of volatile memory work, restoring old save data is impossible because the data no longer exists anywhere on the cartridge once the power source for that chip dies. For making a copy of existing data though, in case you want to preemptively replace a save battery (or use the save data in an emulator on a PC), check out my BennVenn Joey Gen3 and Joey Jr. Videos! Thanks for your comment. 👍🏻

Dear I didn’t know that. I thought that they functioned similar to DS cartridges where they just had a flash chip

@@palemacaroon4836 Surprisingly, some even use core memory to store savegames (no joke). Aria of Sorrow is an example.

does cross battery replacing work, meaning you could use the 1616 on a 2025 board or a 2025 on a 1616 board, or would that simply cause a lot of issues or overload the cart itself?

Hey man! I've been watching your videos and I'm hoping if you can do a video of how to set up a proper firmware for r4 sdhc 2019 for nds lite, i can't really find the right firmware for me it only shows the menu screen.

It’s funny that the Pokémon silver you have is taped up like that, that’s exactly how I had to do it years ago, internet was still pretty young and the tabbed batteries were not available, neither was the tool to take it apart, had to heat a pen up then shove it on the screw to mold it to the right shape

I couldn't even say how many times I've torn my hands and fingers open shoving flathead screwdrivers under those damn batteries when I first started out with this kind of stuff. I even destroyed a cart or two completely unnecessarily doing this. I know better these days, but still. It is so important to learn proper technique when working with electronics like this!
