Let's Plant some more SEEDS! A few weeks back we kicked off the 2022 gardening season with some indoor seed starting of some cold hardy crops: cabbage, celery, some spinach and loofa. Today, we'll start getting some of the warmer weather plants going - Tomatoes and Peppers. Yes, peppers! I know in my 2022 garden plan video I said I wasn't going to do them, but you guys changed my mind ♥

My dad is an avid gardener. He’s retired and really picked up gardening the last ten years or so. Last year he built a greenhouse for tomatoes and cucumbers. He grows potatoes, carrots, onions, and celery among other things. He likes to be self sufficient and take great pride in what he grows. Usually it lasts him and my mother through the winter, and he also give away a lot.

Hi guys tip for Todd and the sweet potato you have to keep the soil really wet and then you will get slips that's how I do it every year just a little tip.

Thanks for that tip. Mine rotted doing the toothpick/water method like Rachel is having such success with. I have gotten sprouts with the method like Todd is doing but not really until I put them outside (where they are getting more water from rain). I'm going to write your tip down so I don't forget it next year.

We’re raising a large garden again this year! It’s been over 20yrs since we did a big garden. We’ve got several seeds started & some up already! So excited! I just turned 57yrs old Sunday but I still love canning, dehydrating & whatever else I can learn. It’s time people get back to their roots. I was raised on a farm in east central Ky. After we married we farmed for several years. Then moved to town & stopped gardening so much. I watch you guys all the time. Tomatoes, green beans, corn & squash used to be our big staples. This year it’s all sorts of things!! Woohoo!!

Hey Lisa I'm in central Ky too. What have you started already? I put out turnips, chinese broccoli, choy, carrots, onions and potatoes today. Have peppers, tomatoes, celery, celariac, cabbage and cauliflower growing indoors right now.

If you want a never ending supply of plant stakes go to your local thrift store and buy some of those old Vinyl/plastic window blinds and then cut them up. One set will literally make thousands

Some are complaining of 50% germination with seed for 2022. I am not having that issue. I cannot wait to get things planted outdoors!! One tip I will share: do not plant too deeply. Thank you, young lady. God bless. P. S. You're not boring us with naming the varieties!

I have never heard of soaking pepper seeds before planting. I’ve had no problem just starting them like tomato seeds. Maybe I’ll try that this year to see if they germinate faster. They are slow little buggars lol. Thanks for the tip!!

To raise and lower your lights, get some chain at your hardware store and cut it to length for attaching to your lights. My cheapo Amazon shoplights had a spot on each end for attaching S hooks, and I just adjust the chain with the hooks for raising/lowering my lights on my wire shelf racks.

The brassicas are frost hardy. I planted my seeds in aluminum 9x13 baking pans outside in my raised covered beds. Spinach, collards, cabbage, kale, broccoli and cauliflower all came up outdoors in the covered beds pans. Yesterday they were already bug enough where I was able to put transplant them directly into an adjacent raised bed. My more frost tender are started inside. So glad spring is here

Tweezers for getting the wet seeds out of the water? Link about topping the pepper plants? I kept the flat boxes from my lights and was able to use them to lift the tray closer to the lights. Thank you, I enjoy your videos.

The Cherokee Puple is my favorite tomato. Planted it last year for the first time. 6 plants of it and 1 cebrity. My plants got to be 5 feet tall and bushy as can be. I canned and freeze dried a years worth of spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, salsa and just freeze dried slices to put on burgers as well as 6 qts of tomato powder. I hzd3 so msny3 tomatoes i was supplying all the neighbors with all they wanted for fresh eating. I have nevdr4 had such a prolific tomato harvest.

Thank you so much for sharing with us. I'm a high desert gardener. They don't give us a last date for frost because the weather is so eradic. Last year average temperature 93 degrees. We had great tomato plants but no fruit it was to hot. Our high temperature was 125. Lost to chickens that day. I'm praying we have better weather this year. Very unusual weather. Love you're videos.

There aren't that many plants that you need a heat mat for. I just have one for my peppers, and then reuse it for something else once my peppers are above ground. The seed soak was interesting. I just fire my seeds into damp soil, put on the heat mat with a cover to hold moisture, and we are good to go.

@@sandrajohnson9926 hi, I don't even remember where these came from but I now have a plastic airtight box, before that just around the house, in a draw, whatever, my dad had given me some seeds but he passed 2007 so I really am not sure where they came from.

I love watching you get excited about the little sprouts. I'm the same way. I am always calling my husband into the room to show him the progress and he is such a trooper. He encourages me even though gardening is not his thing.

I always love to watch your gardening videos. Your tips on topping peppers and trimming onion tops always works for me. For gentle watering, I take a plastic water bottle and using an ice pick, I punch from one to three tiny holes in the cap. Provides a really gentle spray for tiny seedlings. The cap with one hole I use for fresh sown seeds so they don't dislodge. Your seedlings look amazing!

Hi guys, if u check out Deep South homesteads method of starting sweet potato slips u might find that burying the potato works better than water. The key is to completely cover the potato and the deeper u do the better root system you get!

I would never use lazy and Rachel in the same sentence, ever. I’m in Michigan directly east of you and I’m trying Winter sowing this year. I also have backup starts inside, just in case. Such an exciting time of year, always something new to try.

The Mountain Vineyard tomatoes are delicious! I grew them last year, however they're more of a grape type tomato. Much smaller and juicier than a roma. Just fyi.

I really enjoyed watching you grow from seed for the first time last year! And you're bang on, everyone does what works for them. And what system works.. I have Park Biodomes, which have plugs, can plant 140 plants from start to finish, only takes 3 sq foot grow lights, no soil to cause mold or gnats, can't overwater, when hardening off, it's 3 small trays to move in and out. I've done every method, and probably soil or soil block starts might be better, I may do a few this year to see if i can spot a difference, but this it works really well for me in my situation, which is no room! I too am an imprecise (or lazy) gardener, but seeds have been growing without man helping them along for most of their existence! Can't believe there are people who don't believe in intelligent creation :)

Hibiscus flowers dried are great for tea and juice. It's great hot or cold. Lots of vitamin C.

I was made fun of (for many things 😂😂😂 ) but was corrected that the company currently known as TSC was started in the 30s as "Tractor Supply Company". I think saying "Tractor Trailer" comes easy because of semis being called tractor trailers. Anyway, I went to the company's website to see if it was true and sure enough the company has always been called Tractor Supply Company. Your sweet potato slips are so much further along than mine. I tried the water method and mine rotted. I moved on to the method that Todd is doing and I'm getting sprouts. I'll try the water method again next year. I've never used the HOSS seeds but you're making a believer out of me. HOSS here I come. 🤩

I’m remembering last year when we had frost Memorial Day weekend. I’ve not started warm weather plants yet because I don’t intend to put them in the garden until June 1 this year! I’m only a couple hours south of you.

After my cancer surgery and Covid last fall, I haven’t recovered enough to want to expend the energy on it. I love how excited you are with your little seedlings, though!

I've always heard a good rule of thumb for sowing is twice as deep as the size of seed. Small seed like peppermint, which is like dust, just sprinkle on top. Don't bury.

You are doing such a great job! Seed starting is addicting and once you get a hang of it the sky's the limit. My passion is flowers but vegetables are a great starting point. Delphiniums are the hardest because they have seeds have to be frozen and then germinated in the dark. My mom would put them in the refrigerator in a box. Crazy right! My favorite is a Russian black tomato...which for the life of me I can not remember the correct name. Black Krim maybe? Happy planting.

I'm sorry, I can never have enough peppers, tomatoes and onions! And potatoes...Canned, frozen, dried or fresh. Just did my seeds for my area. I use craft popsicle sticks from dollar store for markers. I'm a seed hoarder, last fall bought all my seeds at discount because I worried about shortages for this year. I still buy others as I find them that I want.

I started 20 Roma's and some slicers and some for fresh eating. Started some slicers for a neighbor and tomatoes for a family member. Cabbage starts are all doing great. Peppers too.

I'm in Arizona and I already have 2 small Black from Tula tomatoes on my plant. My small Red Robbin plant is starting to get some fruit too. This is my first year gardening in Arizona and I'm TERRIFIED of everything that can go wrong. I start most of my seeds in the garage then put them on the patio. After it heats up I just put them out in the sun little buy little to harden them off.

I completely feel your excitement! I started seeds for the first time and I’m amazed everyday that they’re actually growing! I just keep saying “I’m growing stuff!” Lol. I’m ready to do the first fertilizing and I need to add some ‘wind’. I won’t lie, I am nervous that what’s coming won’t be without issues but I’m ready because at least I’m trying. Rachel! So I started my tomato seeds about 10 days ago and went a little crazy on varieties this year. Well... one of my trays was doing great germination wise, but the other tray was not really sprouting. And then the last seed starting video of yours I was watching the other day, you were talking about what seeds need AIR :) and then as I was watching this video and saw how fluffy your soil was.... a light bulb went off. I packed the soil in my trays too much and initially had too much water in my soil as well. I think that combo really weighed them down and those little guys couldn't breathe! So, I stopped this video, fluffed up the dirt in the cells that hadn't germinated and just replanted the varieties that didn't sprout yet. There's still time! And... I broke my plastic spoons in 1/2 and was able to use the spoony part and the stick part for my labels. I heart you! I can't wait to see what happens in the next week with my 're-do'. I'm learning!

Really nice video Rachel. Mike started our seed in January to plant in mid March. We planted last weekend and have most plants in the ground. We are waiting on cucumber, beans for a week or two, it's still in the upper 40's some nights. Good to see ya, God Bless Rochelle.

Another 9ber? Awesome! Almost everything is planted here, but I’m waiting for the sun to move a bit more (balcony is tricky for light between spring and summer 🙄) before setting out cukes - but they’re starting to itch for some soil freedom! When in Jan did you start? I started mine 1/1 but I’m thinking it may be a week or two early - the tomatoes were huge by the time they were in the ground. I always forget how fast they grow!

I saved seeds from my sweet basil last year. I don't know if they were heirloom seeds but, I'm gonna try it. I've been seed starting for the past few days. My little grow light station is bursting with plants. running out of room. I have never soaked my seeds before and they always turned out okay. I am pre-soaking cilantro seeds thought. My peas were direct sown into the garden at the same time I started potatoes, lettuce, radishes, beets, leeks, spinach, onions, ect... We have been getting a lot of rain ever since the seeds were put out. It's been a little chilly at night time but, I think they'll be okay because these are all cool weather crops. I am also using the cheap walmart grow lights in addition to others I used in the past.

That's what we're doing tomorrow, seeding tomatoes and basil 🌿, like the idea of shop sticks!. We use popsicles sticks for markers they are cheap.

Your pepper could easily slide in with flowers and herbs. Most pepper plants can double as ornamentals in edible landscaping. 🏘️🌸🌶️

when I discovered Cherokee purple about 18 years ago I fell in love. that year the squirrels kept steeling them so I didn't get to try it until about the 5th tomato to ripen. I have grown it every year since (except for the 2 summers I lived in Mexico). someone had a tomato salad I made once and said they liked the watermelon in it...it was the cherokee purples lol

Looks like Todd needs to keep his sweet potato’s soil a bit more moist. I use the dirt method as well and have had much better success with it than I did the water method. Good luck Todd!

As you know we have our share of teaser days in Monroe. It kind of makes it hard to wait till the soil temp.gets up to do full on planting so on a day like today with a rare east wind coming off the lake I can clean out the chicken pen and work it in to the compost pile.I may have to plant my my own starts to get the veggies we want next year. Good video I always learn something from them.

What I have found that holds so many people back is wanting to do things only a certain way because they have to buy all the most expensive cool stuff etc to grow. They don't realize it's the process not necessarily the tools.

So I did sweet potatoes both ways this year and have lots of slips from the potato in soil, but none from the ones in jars! There are lots of roots on the jar potatoes, but no buds or slips yet.
