I'll never tire watching people discover the Righteous Brothers .... Watching them on Andy Williams is the most fun because they joke and dance around. It always surprises people when Andy chimes in but it IS his show ...
Sadly he had some major problems personal and professional. He gave up his Rights to "Unchained Melody" and he lost a chance to make Bank when it was featured in Ghost and The Wonder Years. He was addicted to Cocaine and he also ran a Golden Oldies Style Restaurant. In 1981 he and Bill Medley sang Rock & Roll Heaven on The American Bandstand 30th Anniversary Special and they paid homage to the Signers who died from Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the like. They are "Not" Brothers, they got their start when they were performing at Navy Bases in San Francisco and the Mostly Black Audience would clap and say "That's Righteous Brothers" and the name stuck. This was their Second Number One Hit the first of course being You've Lost That Loving feeling. Yet it was their Second collaboration with Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil. The Show they are on is Hullaballoo a popular Rock Sow from the 1960's where each week someone Guest Hosts. That week it was Nancy Sinatra who described them as two guys who did inspiring interpretations fo Soul Music.
@@laminage You need to do some real research. Bobby was NOT a cocaine addict! The night of his death, he and Bill flew in from L.A. Bill wrote in his book that Bobby looked bad. He said that he would have dinner in his room. Bobby had a huge appetite. Drug addicts don't eat a lot. When they found him, he was in his bed with the tv remote in his hand. No drugs in the room. Bobby had 95pct. blockage in his major arteries. Autopsy was a false positive. No one could perform, year after year for over 40 years like Bobby did, and be strung out on drugs. He he didn't pay attention to his health, was a heavy smoker. Bobby was tired. He needed to rest. Bill said that if he had thought that Bobby was hooked, he would have done something. You don't work closely with someone for over forty tears and not know that something is wrong.
These two complemented each other perfectly. Bill's thundering baritone and Bobby's flowing tenor were musical magic. One of, if not the greatest duo in history.
Bill's thundering baritone, and Bobby's flowing tenor were magic together. Angela, they were not biological brothers, it was a name given to them because they sounded "righteous" to some folks.
The duo was playing in a club one night and a member of the audience told them," Fellas, that was righteous!", and thus became the name of the best blue-eyed soul group to ever be.
If this is your first foray into The Righteous Brothers, here are a few other songs you should check out: Unchained Melody You've Lost That Loving Feeling I Just Want To Make Love To You And many more.
“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 73 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’ was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965 Andy Williams Show (with his mother sitting right behind him) Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby’s use of “Runs” is masterful. He created the style and set the table that all others have fed off of for decades. 7 notes just to say the word “I” is melodic brilliance. Their name came from doing a show near a marine base in So Calif and a black marine said to them…. You two guys are Righteous Brothers. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......
I'm 67, I remember the Righteous Brothers, they were called Blue eye soul artist. Here are other songs recorded by them. You lost that loving feeling, Unchain Melody, Just once in my life( which is my favorite) they also did, Hey girl. Also done by Freddie Scott. Anyway, there was Dusty Springfield, you don't have to say you love me. Gerry and the Pacemakers, Don't let the Sun Catch you Crying. There's the Walker brothers, Don't Sun ain't shine anymore. Summer of '66-----------this was #1 all over the world. Bill Medley, & RIP, Bobby Hatfield. --------Written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, + Phil Spector. -------------MJL< 75 y/o
Girl is screaming for true Love! In a time not long ago, Women were treated as the Gift they are, and Men wrote lyrics like this to express that!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Righteous Brothers is the name of their duo group. They adopted the name from some Black Marines who came to see them perform at a club somewhere in CA which they referred to them as the righteous brothers whenever they came to see them perform and had communication with them as well; so, they decided to take the nickname these Black Marines gave them as the name of their group, according to Bill Medley. He's the singer with the deep voice.
They were the best!! Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, Blue eyed Soul. I saw them when I was a teenager. And have never forgot them. Bobby Hatfield could also get down even though he was a tenor!!!
Bill Medley's voice is absolutely heavenly. By the way, his speaking voice sounds just like his singing voice. Imagine hearing him on the phone. No they are not related. This sing is one of my favorite. Thank you for posting this.🥰🥰❤❤
The Righteous Brothers got their name in southern California from some African American Marines who said "You Brothers are Righteous. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were not biological brothers. I referred to them as the "Blue Eyed Brothers of Soul" on my radio show. Too bad we lost Bobby Hatfield in 2003. They are back together and they still sound great with Bills' new partner Bucky Heard. I just met and spoke with Bill Medley last week in Laughlin Nevada. They are now in Las Vegas performing right now.
Actually it was black singers who dubbed their music as blue eyed soul. And if you didn't see them and and just heard them, you'd swear that that was a couple of brothers, as in black singing.
To see another side of the Righteous Brothers and to truly appreciate their talent and range, you should react to them singing "I Just Wanna Make Love To You."
Thx Angela! The Everly brothers (actual brothers) influenced so many other artists. If you like family harmonies they would be fun to see your reaction! -Terry
They are not real brothers, the tall one is Bill Medley, he is a baritone with a large range of notes that he can sing, the shorter one is Bobby Hatfield, he is a tenor/contra-tenor with a very large range. If you have interest in an analysis, try Wings of Pegasus for several analyses of different singers including Bobby Hatfield singing Unchained Melody.

Hello Angela, you should listen to Simply Red- Holding back the years, Paul Young-Every time you go away or Ray, Goodman and Brown- Special Lady (1979).
Baritone is Bill Medley and his partner is Bobby Hatfield. Two more of their tracks you should listen to are "Ebb Tide and ""I Just Want To Make Love To You."
Angela, I've recently discovered your channel, and I appreciate the emotions you lift from so many songs, especially those by Karen Carpenter. I think you would enjoy and appreciate "At This Moment" by Billy Vera and the Beaters.
This particular video has a rather tinny audio quality; listen to the studio version to really be blown away! I believe that Bill is a baritone and Bobby (deceased) was a tenor, fyi. My much older sis (11 yrs my senior) used to hang at a bar off Sunset Strip that the "Brothers" (and Little Richard!) frequented, and she was always aflutter when their names came up, like 95% of the post-pubescent female pop in the USA...
Bobby Hatfield tenor, bill medley baritone.blue eyed soul.bill said this was his favorite song of theirs.bobby s left is several years ago but bill still performs.
A singer from back then that often gets over-looked is Dusty Springfield. Here's a link to "If You Go Away," but there are so many. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wyCVxPEPx5Y.html
They got their name back in the sixties when a group of black marines came into the club they were playing and after hearing them said they two “righteous brothers”. That name stuck with them forever. No they weren’t actual brothers
This is a great song, timeless. Thank you for playing this. This is how I felt when my first love and I broke up. It is definitely very moving. Maybe I am the only one who can relate to this but probably not.
Not brothers,,, Bill Medley, is a baritone with a wide vocal range, Bobby Hatfield is a tenor, with extraordinary range, referred to as a contra-tenor. If analysis of voices is of interest, see contributor here 'Wings of Pegasus'
Actually, according to their biography, they were playing an all black club down near the marine corps base in San Diego. Originally, the audience, who were all black Marines, were shocked and angry because here were these 2 white guys that came on stage. Bobby and Bill were both afraid and didn't know what to do, so they just started singing. After the first notes, the Marines all got quiet and listened, and after they finished singing, some of the Marines stood up and started yelling that that was righteous, brothers, and the duet liked it so well that they just went with it. Originally, they didn't know what they were going to call themselves, but they liked the name, so they kept it. 🤣🤣💯
They are not actually brothers. They were playing at a military base and some African-American Marines heard them and shouted out "man, you sound righteous, brother!" They liked it and the name stuck! They were the first group to be known as "blue eyed soul" back in the day. Bill Medley (also sang Time of My Life, the theme from Dirty Dancing) is the deep baritone and Bobby Hatfield is the tenor. Great reaction!
