57 years after it was released, millions are still listening to the Righteous Brothers. Which is more than I can say for 99% of the music being done today. It will be forgotten within 5 to 10 years.
Bobby Hatfield (tenor on the left) and Bill Medley (baritone on the right) were the definition of blue eyed soul. This song was the most played on the airwaves in the 20th century. Bill does sing lead on this song, but on others it's Bobby or the 2 equally. They also have solos. Unchained Melody, a solo by Bobby, is an amazing example of his talent. The record was a number one hit in 1965 and charted again in 1990 when it was in the movie Ghost. The live version from 1965, where he's wearing a pink jacket, is one of the finest live vocal performances I've ever heard. Check it out. There's a reason it has over 62 million views.
its sad you gave it a 'b' , the world gave them an A ++++++, not the U.S. only, but the ' WORLD' , today its rare to find this God given Talented Voices , no electronic fixing , just ' pure sound, hope you check out the other artists that had rare voices, ciao 4 now
This performance was televised on the variety show called "Shindig" Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley made regular appearances on the show. The song was written especially for the Righteous Brothers and it was the most played song on TV and radio of the 20th century. I was 14 when they made this song. Then Bobby sang on the Andy Williams show his live version of "Unchained Melody" I watched that performance. They also made appearances on another variety show called "Hullabaloo"
The Righteous Brothers preceded Mo Town Records and they were dubbed as "Blue Eye Soul". They relied on true vocal talent not auto tune and with no synthesized instrumentation. The video you just played was a live performance aired in 1964.
There wasn't specifically a "lead singer". Both of them are amazingly super-talented vocalists. In other songs, the other singer is more prominently featured (Unchained Melody, he was the ONLY singer). They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone placed them into the top 20 music duos of all time. This song was a number 1 song. They weren't on the Motown label (they were signed by Phil Spector, which was pretty close to the style of Motown at the time). This song was nominated for a Grammy award. Between the two of them, they had amazing vocal range. Bass/baritone - Tenor. They both had amazing vocal control and range.
Bill's the Baritone Bobby the Blond Bomber is the Tenor. That show was live, called Shindig. Tons of big names. A "b"? You need to listen again. And if you think Bobby's a "Backup: for Bill, you need to listen to Bobby;s live performance on the Andy Williams Show in 1965. Blow you away. No, their voices compliment each other perfectly. They are the greatest duo of the 20th century, as you discover more of their music. If you go for Bobby's Unchained Melody, make sure it's on the Andy Williams Show, Bill and Bobby are wearing cool pink blazers. P.S. I subscribed.
This was from a tv show called Shindig, a great live music show that ran from 1964 to 66. This video version is one where someone has cleaned up the video, and laid the studio recording over it. The undoctored version is out there, with the RB singing live against the backing track, video of noticeably poorer quality, though the voices are great, and you can hear the women in the live audience screaming. The Righteous Brothers were incredible. Enjoy your music journey!
This was produced by the great Phil Spector "the wall of sound" but the Righteous Brothers songs back in the days, we cruised playing their music on our car record player and parked with our lady and jumped into the back seat and took care of business! The '60's were great times with all the great artist!!!
This song was the most played song in the 20th century. Think of that. And there was no auto tune back then. Either you could sing or you couldn't back then. Most played song in the 20th century.
I agree with Dawn berry here.Everything she stated is right.Bobby(tenor) Bill Melody the (baritone) shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. This song was played more than any other song in American Radio history. No other song has surpassed it in the 20th century Can you really imagine This? NO other song. This was also a live performance on T.V there is no auto-tone or gimmicks Just PURE RAW GOD GIVEN TALENT
A few years ago Bill Medley came to Nottingham in England to watch Nottingham Forest football team( soccer) . We sing that song every time we score a goal. He is very old now but in the UK we love the Righteous Brothers. They weren't motown either.
This song was made when Phil Spector signed them. If you haven't done so...check out Unchained Melody sung just by Bobby Hatfield when the Righteous Bros. were on the 1965 Andy Williams TV show. They both are wearing pink sports jackets.
You are speaking from ignorance and therefore have poor judgement. You will learn from experience that these two singers were the pinnacle of their profession and were loved all around the world for their incredible talent and fabulous, memorable songs. Explore their music and enjoy !
ShakaShineReacts: You're miles off on this, you didn't put your listening ears on! A quick listen to Bobby's "Unchained Melody" which he performed live and solo will inform you greatly. This comment meant not to belittle you, but kindly, in order to help you :-)
I'm not trying to criticize anyone but I'm going to tell you one thing Motown is separate from Phil Spector is the '60s Phil Spector is known for his wall of sound that's what it was called and he also made a lot of hits for a lot of artists in the 50s and 60s part of the '70s too.
Shindig and hullabaloo for two of the TV shows variety shows on way before Soul Train, that's where all the other shows came about was from shindig and hullabaloo.
Bro i can literally tell the parts in this song you like cause i can see your teeth when it gmhitting you so you can act like you just jaming with it but i can see them parts you love 😂😂😂
You gave a "B" to the song that was the MOST PLAYED SONG , not of the week, not of the year, not of the decade----of the CENTURY. FACT. And to call Bobby Hatfield the backup! I'm going to believe you're just very inexperienced. Listen to "Unchained Melody" which has been described as a masterpiece among other things. I am 75 years old so I am somewhat outspoken (which I enjoy after a lifetime of swallowing my tongue more often than not). However, I hope you take this as constructive criticism. You seem to have potential.
You need to understand my grading system. I only grade off of other music by the same artist. This is the only song I have heard of there’s. So I have nothing else to go off of so I had to give them a B. Out of 600+ videos I have given out less then 10 A’s.
They got their name from performing in bars and a group of black guys told them they were Righteous. History was made after that... when music and talent was real. Check out Rick James and Teena Marie Fire and Desire 🔥🔥 Motown was definitely amazing and the talent.
Big fan of good music, I’m a 80’s baby who grew up on Hip-Hop and rapping everything from the Fat Boys-NWA when I was 3-4 years old . But spinning on the ones and twos was my thing and what I loved the most was the ability for artists to sample which is one of the reasons hip-hop was better in the 90’s (and lyrical Rhyming/songs with meaning). I would love to see you review some Group Home, AZ, Big L or Gang star and Camp Lo !RIP L, and Guru! Thanks for your reviews and been checkin out your music!
This is the best mucic back in the day..Nothing competes to this music..... Music was about Love n Happiness.and all building up to marriage....Song of today isn't about love n respect...It all about killing n who cares about the Hoe!!!! Real. Bad...
