A machine celebrating the Chartist protest in Newport, S. Wales in 1839. In the Westgate Hotel, the Windsor- Browns, an obnoxious English family waits for breakfast while all hell breaks loose outside. Made in 1996. Christopher Logue and Rosemary Hill recorded the voices.

this is absolutely incredible, it feels like you've bottled a snippet of a historical play and preserved it in mechanical form! The shadow puppet window was really excellent, it added a lot of convincing depth and movement to the riot outside

This is amazing. Spooner's work feels to me like a mix between Red Grooms and Calder's Circus, mechanized. This should be getting so many more views and likes.

Certainly Tom. It's a bit clearer on the actual machine but as there's a riot in the background, the Welsh speakers have the advantage of subtitles. The words are: Him; Tell the child to stop rocking in his chair. Her: Hereward, please stop rocking in your chair. Him: where's that damned girl? Servant: I'm sorry Mr Windsor Brown, breakfast isn't ready yet. We've had a bit of trouble outside, see. Him: What sort of a place is this, anyway? Her: Hereward please stop rocking in your chair.

I appreciated the "backstage" look at the riot. I was hoping for a view of the electronics etc. How were the voices done?

Sorry this reply comes so late. I recorded two friends of mine on tape. Will Jackson plumbed it into the PLC ( programmable logic controller) which linked the voices to the actions.
