A lot of the parts are driven by pneumatic motors which are little bellows that can produce a push/pull action more easily than an electric motor. They are connected to the driving bellows through flexible tubing that can move with the moving scene inside the head. Also it's more fun to watch.
What type of flexible material did you use to make your bellows? I've been working on a smoking automata featuring The Trailer Park Boys, so I was thinking of making a bellows to make them smoke. Thanks!
I use a type of leather and reinforce the sides with card. It's called pneumatic skiver, sold by organ materials suppliers. The traditional glue is hide glue liquified by heat but I find ordinary PVA works OK. Pedantic note: The word "automata" is plural "automaton' is singular.
Thanks, I understood about automata and automaton, but I thought since there were 3 figures I should use automata. Just want to say what a great fan I am of your work-your work is the bomb-diggety bomb! I'm thinking of starting a petition requesting that the town of Wishram, the world navel for all things creative and artistic, and what scientist believe is the oldest continuously inhabited spot in N. America, to be renamed New Stithia. What do you think?
