The Rise and Fall of Al-Andalus | What Was the Reconquista?

What was the Reconquista? For over seven centuries an assortment of Muslim powers ruled parts of Iberia, which they called al-Andalus, but during all of that time, things were never static on the peninsula.
Under the Umayyad Dynasty, al-Andalus was conquered from the Christian Visigoths, under the Emirate of Cordoba, it experienced a golden age, and under the Nasrid Granadans, it survived for 200 years despite the triumph of Christianity elsewhere. Though, by 1492 the last Muslim state on the peninsula, the Emirate of Granada, had been destroyed; replaced by Spain's modern Christian order.

Interesting, i always wondered what happened to Al Andalus, why it's united in 867 but disunited in 1066. Also why did Castille leave Grenada for 200 years? Why did they not outright conqueror them?
@LookBackHistory
@LookBackHistory 3 года назад
That's an interesting question, I suppose I did brush over that a bit in the video. My understanding is that the tribute Castile received from the Nasrids was enough to disincentivize them from a full-blown conquest. War is risky, threatening it and getting paid, is not so much.

The ancient Greek works were never 'lost' in Europe. They were stored in monastic libraries where they would be copied and distributed throughout the rest of Europe amongst other monastic libraries. When Christendom rose from the collapse of the Roman Empire, cities grew and scholasticism grew again, where the monastic libraries contributed to the resurgence of Europe.

I disagree with you calling the Caliphate the Islamic Empire. It has a distinct name for a reason. Also there were multiple Caliphates in this era of Muslim strength, the first three being the Rashidun Caliphate (Muhammad's Caliphate), second being the Umuyyad Caliphate who conquered a ton of stuff outside of Arabia, and the third and last one being the Abbasid Caliphate (who rebelled against the Umuyyad Caliphate).
@sheikh.omairraza
@sheikh.omairraza Год назад
I think that the Rashidun and umayyud caliphates should be classified as one, as the four caliphs of Rashidun were elected by a common vote mainly by ansars and sahabas(except the forced election of Ali radiullahu anhu) Muawiya was the same state system introduced from Abu Bkur (radiullahu anhu) to Uthman(radiullahu anhu) with only slight changes, it was just when muawiyas son was to succeed him without a vote sahabas that pushed the house of abbas to revolt,

Man, everyone sleeps on the very much so still alive, rich, advanced and holding access to classics, Byzantine Empire. Likewise under Charlemagne there was the Carolingian Renaissance which is what our usage of Latin text is based off of. Likewise you can see between the years 1000-1200 massive advances in literally every aspect of society in Europe from art, armour, buildings farming techniques. Likewise you'd rather be a medieval peasant than an Arabic Nomad or Asian Rice farmer, having access to public baths and drinking walking, restaurants, social mobility, etc

Omg, it's right. Ramon Berenguer never was king of Aragón, the king was his father-in-law Ramiro II and after him his son Alfonso II, he only becames prince of Aragón by the marriage whith princess Petronila. The flag comes from the vassalage of the Kingdom of Aragón whith the king Sancho Ramírez in 1068 to the pope Alexander II, taking the popes flag colors to his own flag (red & yellow).
