It's not worth the money to bust your butt every day only to be dumped on and treated like crap. Never considering the personal lives of your employees is a common failure of the business owner. In the end, what did the dedication and abuse get them? The guy died and their jobs were lost. Look after your own life first!

100%....the "owners" don't realize that the people are the business, without them you have nothing. I've worked with teamsters in NYC and Mormons in SLC, all over North America. I always thanked people for working for me (as long as they weren't F'ing me) and treated them with respect, and in turn, got respect back. I was the site manager of a construction site and had a crew of 8 working directly for me. When it turned out the paychecks were going to be late on a friday and not ready until monday, many of the guys were freaking out because some had child support to pay, some had rent etc. So I covered those guy's pay out of my own pocket. Word got back to the office and the president called me up "why'd you do that"? Me: why should they suffer for the office failing? The very least you can do is make sure they got paid when they were supposed to. "yeah, you're right, how much did you put out"? Me: about 5K. Word got out throughout the company (they had 4 diff sites going at the time) EVERYONE wanted to work for me lol. "damn, he takes care of his guys".

@muskokamike127 wow lucky you had the money to do that. a lot of our managers get less take home pay after deductions. We the workers do standby and overtime. The managers don't they are taken off the standby. And they're consolidated pay so no overtime.

Dwayne was the behind most of the drama with the other employees and went running to Boyd hoping to score more brownie points by narc'ing on the other guys for any small infringment. I don't recall him doing anything on that show of value except give the network their drama clips for the, "On the next episode of American Hot Rod..." (cue yelling). Watch the clip of when Brad Quits, that says everything to Dwayne and his attitude to everyone.

By the time the show introduced Boyd Coddington to the general public, he was no longer capable of doing the builds that had made him famous. It was the staff that carried the show. That show was all conflict, all the time. It was a perfect example of a toxic and antagonistic work environment. Like 'American Chopper', it was a show that became unwatchable rather quickly if you were more into the cars than the needless drama.

The shops that did these shows used them to prop up their small businesses. Both American Chopper/Hotrod made more money from the tv shows then their business dealings. Paul Sr had to fire almost the entire staff between the last season and Sr vs Jr while Boyd's wife had to shut down the shop within 6 months of his passing.

Unless the show was shot this way intentionally. Leaving out the lead up to the friction. It felt very heavy and saddening to see people treated poorly. People work to live. Not live to work .. The guy who wanted to drop his child to school be a touch late in the morning. But work excessive hours, weekends and more got talked down to. Shows the true character of a person. Sad on so many levels.
