I can’t believe nobody has made a ridiculously detailed and stupidly long essay about the Majestic Empire of Latvia. Here we go: Before a proper Latvia, there was a Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, a vassal state of the, at the time, great Lithuania. In 1564, three years after it was established, it officially took over all of the Courland region. In 1569, however, the vassal became one of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s, who expanded the territory to include more of modern-day northern Latvia and southern Estonia, though kept the same name. These territorial expansions continued under the P.L.C., eventually conquering much of Livonia, including the island of Saaremaa, which slipped from the Danish grasp as the ambitions of the PLC for the little vassal became more and more apparent. By 1572, after little resistance and taking over the Livonian Order, the PLC began the vassal’s expansion in 1574 subtly into Sweden, beginning with the islands of Gotland and Öland. Yet it is under the Polish-Lithuanian banner that Latvia shall exist for no longer. In 1577, the red-white-red banner was adopted, and Latvia began fighting for independence, knowing a simple proclamation will not stop the ambitions of the PLC. The rebellious forces started with a majority of the vassal, giving them an advantage. The PLC began pecking at the south of the vassal with its hussars. Between 1577 and 1580, fatal losses plagued the independence fighters. 1581 brought hope to the fighters, as slow advancements which began deepening into PLC territory headed by Edvards Jevgenijs Silins. Silins started in Courland, while forces into Gdynia were led by Vitalijs Liepa, asserting dominance during the Battle of Grudziądz in late of 1581, a battlefield in which the general leading the assault against the Latvians was killed. This further advanced Liepa in 1582 deep inland, while their camp in Gdynia shrunk due to barrages by other miniature PLC units. Meanwhile, Silins’ gains in Courland stagnated until 1583, joining Liepa’s assault in PLC proper. Liepa, however, distressed with the situation at the Gdynia camp, relinquished part of his power to his vice, Sergejs Zvirbulis. Zvirbulis defended the camp, while Liepa broke up his units in order to leapfrog and encircle the PLC forces near the camp. This tactic proved a success in 1584. Though Liepa forced Zvirbulis to abandon the camp and move forwards. Lieoa and Silins employed a tactic in which they forced civilians to join their army, strengthening the rebellion. Though in 1589, Zvirbulis would be killed in battle and defeated. The year prior, the strong rebellious force would exert dominance in Kaliningrad, though at the cost of Zvirbulis’ health. He continued leading units, however, until he died the following year, a fatal loss for Liepa and the rebellion as a whole. In 1596, after years of crumbling and rising, the Latvian Empire was established. Davis Balodis, a former officer in the war and key figure for independence after 1590, became king as Davis I, beginning the Balodis dynasty. Davis I would issue a mandate in 1602 demanding an expedition to the Caribbean islands, which would be captained by Davids Ozols. He launched the flotilla the following year, arriving in modern-day Grenada. Ozols created a fortification and settlement, and additionally took parts of the southern Grenadines, leaving control to Niklavs Rudzitis as he returned to Riga in 1604 showing Caribbean cocoa, tobacco, and sugarcane to Davis I. With faith in Ozols, he demanded he return to the colony, which he did in 1605. In 1608, the Latvian Empire advanced into Ingria, upon which lies the modern-day Saint Petersburg. Davis I would eventually send Eduards Liepins, who led his units and showed his greatness during decisive battles against Swedish forces in Finland. Liepins used cannonballs to break the ice in lakes for their horses and dragoons to cross. Liepns would make it further north and establish a base in modern-day Tampere. In 1610, Ozols expanded the colony to include Saint Vincent and St. Lucia, allowing for more produce and, in turn, money, to be made from the colonies. The main settlement in Saint Vincent was named Fort Ozols for self-explanatory reasons. In 1612, Davis I additionally sent Liepa to the south, occupying Kaliningrad and going further south. In 1613, the Swedes surrendered a signed a treaty, and Liepa held position for a few months before retreating and evacuating inland for resupply to launch an assault on the east of the south boundary. During this time, the Empire additionally became a key figure and component in the Hanseatic League as guilds were established in Riga and Klaipeda. This increased trade, growing the economy, and flocking brilliant minds such as Thomas Vidal, starting the age of science in the country with science education. The first terrible blow for the Empire came in 1616, when Russia retaliated against its expansion by taking Ingria and parts of Estonia. Liepins in the fort in Finnish territory also retaliated by working with Davis I’s son, Prince Eizens Balodis, to recapture Ingria. After the successful recapture, a campaign deep into Russian territory began as small towns would be targeted. In 1618, Balodis moved south and Liepins remained in the north to begin a fight towards Moscow, which was captured in 1620, the year Russia surrendered at the sheer force of the Empire. The following year, Davis I was assassinated. Power went to his son Eizens, who became Eizens I and had yet another Prince Davis. In 1624, an invasion into Poland commenced. The power of the country’s most prized generals was unfathomable to the Polish Kingdom, which, after multiple advancements trapping coastal cities and the capture of Warsaw, capitulated in 1628 at the cost of General Leons Berzins, who perished in the Siege of Warsaw, 1628. Poland capitulated and tried grasping the power source which generates the magic which blessed the Empire. Dragons, staffs, tridents, and flying carpets were used. The fleet of dragons bombarded the enemy from the air, emitting explosions and fires to diminish and burn the enemies. In 1630, while Ozols controlled the colonies in the Caribbean, cartographer Rihards Gunars Karklins stumbled upon a natural canal and claimed it as his, meeting the local people and mapping the area. He claimed it for Latvia, the news reaching the ears of Eizens I upon his arrival in 1635 after he mapped most of mainland Africa. Karklins found fish, clay, and titanium in Gambia. A trading colony was made here headed by Karklins himself. Merchants flocked for these resources, including those from other African kingdoms. This increased the amount of gold Karklins and the Empire had, kept in the Gambia. Because it was susceptible to robbers, it was heavily guarded and defended by the Empire’s Guard. The following year, however, the Empire shrunk as Cossacks, a large problem in the south of the country, took control of many southeastern cities. Swedish forces also took advantage of the Empire’s weakness and snarled in Finland, forcing the retreat of Liepins inland after he failed to properly defend the fortification in Finland. In 1641, Eizens, upset with the Cossack and Swedish invasions, joined the Thirty Years’ War and invaded many German territories. In 1642, Berlin was besieged by Aleksandrs Briedis, who led many units to victory in this region. Briedis additionally took over a port in Pomerania, and captained a flotilla himself towards Sweden. He slammed into the country, taking over Gothenburg, Malmo, and other major Swedish cities, though forces in Stockholm distracted him as his claims were diminished, and a lack of troops in the German claims caused them to be taken over in 1643. The Swedes severely injured and wounded him. Disappointed in himself, he exiled himself to the Gambian colony, where he spent his life in isolation other than becoming brief governor of the colony in 1644, a position he kept because Karklins needed to return to Riga for family matters. The colony collapsed. Ozols died in 1644 forcing the loss of the Caribbean colony, along with Eizens the next year. Davis II took power to deal with territorial losses and unrest as Briedis failed to cope with his defeats. Davis II resigned in 1647, giving control to Emperor Antons, who ended the invasions and tried reformations in the country. Antons rebuilt the country, grew the economy and made a stock exchange in Riga, trying to become involved in the scientific revolution. In 1649, he sent Karklins to Hainan and China to attack Chinese and Vietnamese forces, taking many Chinese kingdoms and abolishing dynasties in 1650. The resources there such as bamboo, iron ore, and marble, copper, and gold in the Taiwanese part of the colony. Karklins also employed a tactic in which he ordered his great dragon fleet to simply glare at the Chinese soldiers down below. The Chinese would think as the dragon as being sent from the gods, wasting energy trying to catch it and eventually being burned by the mouth of the dragon. The following year, the colony was finally attacked, being destroyed in 1653. The Majestic Empire of Latvia tried hanging on, but the Russian and Polish invasions diminished a very large majority of the territory of the Empire in 1659. Riga, unaffected, would try making itself onto the world stage by funding a better university. But in 1662, Antons and his dynasty was abolished, replaced by the Grand Duchy of Latvia. The Empire’s story finally came to its conclusion, from brave fighting in 1596 to a crippling and finally capitulating empire in 1662, lasting 66 years. The maces, staffs, and dragons were all robbed from the Gand Duchy in 1663. The dragons would catch fire to the enemies, however, knowing that they were not Latvian.
