Whaaaat quite a lot is known about Shulgi; he completed the Zigaruts and finalised the law code and centralised all government, mathematics and calenders. He also united the sides of the empire-to-be that his father had continually failed at. Historians widely claim his deeds to have been considerably greater than his father's. You've actually attributed to Ur-Nammu several things his son did, and not he.

I have a 25 volume HISTORIAN"S HISTORY OF THE WORLD -published in 1908 and the volume devoted to the ancient history of Mesopotamia and of Egypt it discusses what was then a very hot historical topic -was there any such civilization as the Sumerians.Apparently,back then, there had been some excavations in Iraq which seemed to indicate the existence of a hitherto unknown culture known (tentatively) as the Sumerian.Some historians back then doubted that there was any such civilization!

Really good video as usual, but just one detail the dates dont completely match up, since the gutian invasion is mentioned to have happened mid 22century bc and approx 100 years till the rise of utuhengal but the latter is dated 2123? so like right after the fall of akkadians?? Im guessing it may be due to different historical interpretations of dates from ancient texts
@christosvoskresye
@christosvoskresye 6 лет назад
It really should have been mentioned that this is the time in which the story of Abraham is set. Even if you don't believe that story, you should be familiar with it, and the existence of an empire based in Ur having tributaries as far as Canaan gives some context to the story of a prosperous citizen of Ur first travelling to Haran and then settling in Canaan.

+Micahistory I might as well give you some feedback. I watched the first video, and the way you used the stock images that had watermarks was a little distracting. Also, I felt you did not script your video, but just had talking points. It was particularly evident in the way you said "So" so many times. Also, your voice doesn't come across very well on the mike. I don't know how to fix your voice going forward, but talking on the mike is different from talking in person, so I suggest you figure out how to improve your microphone voice. I could only get past the first minute or so, because I was too distracted by the problems that I mentioned, but anyway the pacing seems good, so that is a plus.

In fact 'Sumer' or 'Shumer' was called 'Ki-En-Gir' (land of the civilized kings / Kingdom of the Blazing Fire) by people who lived there in that time 6000 years ago. The name 'Ki-En-Gir' was the original name of this ancient civilization, the first occupiers of 'Ki-En-Gir', the Akkadians changed the name to sumer.

The Sumerians and Akkadians did not see one another as Foreign, Their cultures had intermingled for literally all of Mesopotamian history to this point and as another aside, the capital of the Akkadian empire of Sargon was actually called Agade, though in fairness you wont find it called that anywhere in most modern sources, it is however featured on a lot of your maps in the video. Sorry Ive spent the last two days watching a Great Courses Plus series on Mesopotamia.

Good video, just one little thing in relation to the Gutians. You should be very careful about stating the interests of people who definitely didn’t write their history about themselves. The Akkadians had much interest in making the Gutians seem barbaric and different from themselves, I would take the Akkadian account with a big grain of salt.

If I could recommened a book to you, "The Art of Not Being Governed" by James Scott puts the settled vs the unsettled situation into a new perspective. Livar Glesne Well we will maybe never know, however we have nothing but the knowledge of the Mesopotamians about thsi people and there isn't much that could refute the thier claim, I mean, our Media does portray ISIL as super evil and that hasn't been proven so wrong.
@enternalinferno
@enternalinferno 6 лет назад
First, I would love to recommend this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wyzi9GNZFMU.html It's kind of a summary of The Art of Not Being Goverened by James Scott. You're right that it's problematic that we don't have any other account, but I don't think we should therefore say that the account we do have might as well be the objective truth. There is a long history of settled people trying to claim that the non-settled are primitive, barbaric, and simple-minded. From the Berbers and the Arabs in the Maghreb, the Hmong, Karen etc. in modern Thailand and Myanmar, Native Americans by the European explores, etc. The list goes on and on. It might be true, who knows, but we shouldn't firmly state it as a fact, it's a very stereotypical description of a nomadic people. Also, I think the ISIL comparison is very unfair.

In the bible Noah has three sons. One of them is called Shem. Shem has 5 sons. One of them is called Arpachshad. Arpachshad in the hebrew means. Strong hold of the chaldees. Remember this is right after the flood, so for Shem to name his son Strong Hold Of The Chaldees, there must have been a Chaldea long before the flood took place. Also another two of Shems sons are called Ashur and Aram. This just goes to show Chaldeans and Assyrians go far back before the sumerians. The British know we were the first and dont like to give us that respect. So they turned Chaldeans and Assyrians into What you know as “ Sumerians “ How come in no ancients religious literature such as the Bible mention this sumerians ? or its most likely that Sumerians came from Chaldeans and Assyrians.
