honestly, when questioning the whole "'we do the hard work for you' posed in front of a cotton field" really just screams "we have no black people high enough on our staff to feel safe and secure in their job to speak out against that"

I’m glad you covered this brand. When I found out about the Nazi stuff, I was angrier than I had ever been at a celebrity or brand. The “selektion” name especially made my stomach turn. I loved that the brand was vegan and cruelty-free but there was no way I was ever giving her another cent after that. Even now, I’m not sure if I would buy anything from KvD Beauty just because it left such a bad taste in my mouth.
@justadjustor8993

Yeah, and I've always thought that ever since the Holocaust, "selektion", especially spelled specifically like that, is very much referring to *that* specific thing/system that happened in the camps.

After the brand separated and no longer financially supported Kat Von D, I decided to give them a second chance. I have one of the Dazzle Sticks and enjoy it. I had to pause this video and comment my utter horror. I dont know how I didnt know that Kat named a lipstick shade, “Selektion.” I thought the anti-Semitic rhetoric was attributed to her partner so I stayed away from the brand. Knowing that it was Kat herself just makes me physically ill. Anyone and I mean anyone who knows even one ounce of that process would want to stay far away from anything associated with the Shoah. I am at a loss for anymore words truly. Thank you for this video, Kelly.

As a cute little goth kid back in the day, I loved KVD products. The packaging was dark and edgy, matching the creator herself. As I got older, the only product I really loved were the liquid lipsticks. Then the whole anti-vacation thing happened and for me, that was game over.
@kayland.5724
@kayland.5724 Год назад
I remembered when I found out she was anti-vaccine. I used her foundation, powder foundation, eyeliners and liquid lipsticks religiously. I believe I was in my grunge phase - my sophomore year, 2016-2017. I didn't throw her products away because they weren't cheap but I couldn't bring myself to use them again and eventually got rid of them. I'm a lot more careful with what I consume now though, that's for damn sure

KVD was similar to Urban Decay bc it was an "edgier" brand with great products, but I think KVD really locked in their market. The tattoo inspired artistry with (at the time) unusual colors that really served that alternative community. I think they've lost some of that identity, but they are very smart to use TikTok audiences!

I agree with everything you brought up except in the last minute about the packaging. I was hoping you'd cover it a bit more, but with the split of KVD the person, they kept the original packaging because they had already made a bunch of it and didn't want to dump it into the landfill. That's all well and good, it's when it's come to the newer products post rebrand that they still use the original logo that bugs me, I even think to this day they still have some original packaging with existing products. It really makes no sense to me if the brand truly wants to rebrand and keep themselves away from KVD the person, they need to get rid of the original logo in everything. Even that popular balm had/has the original logo, to me it's them being cheap, not a tribute to tattoo artistry.
@AllezVous222

Agreed. For example, after Abercrombie & Fitch's new CEO came in, she had their social media completely scrubbed and started fresh because she knew that that was the only way to make consumers believe her when she said, "This is not Mike Jeffrey's Abercrombie & Fitch." It was a way to clear the people's palate, so to speak. I think that if Kendo wanted to keep the alternative / tattoo art - inspired brand identity, they totally could have done that, but with maybe a tweak or redesign, something to communicate, "Hey, we're not THAT K.V.D."

The thing that makes me giggle about KVD Beauty is how after messy racist Kat the new tattoo artist face of the brand is a mixed race Swedish artist Miryam Lumpini. As if to erase Kat’s issues away by boosting a talented black woman artist. It’s so cynical but as a fan of her work I’m happy someone who isn’t a mess is getting the partnership dollars.

When it came to the name Lolita, it simply came to me as a Japanese fashion style with multiple sub genres so I never questioned it. I would say do not read the book it is so disgusting and loosely based on a true story. If you are interested there is a podcast that does a deep dive into the book. I liked her stuff before I found out about her antivaxx and nazi sympathies. I don't know any Holocaust survivors but they went through so much trauma I can't imagine. I didn't know that she compared the meat industry to concentration camps. Wow that is disturbing and I can't think of anything else to say..😡

@@beckybertish7841 Please don’t just shut down this genuinely good book like that - at best just give a warning that it’s through the POV of someone disgusting, not the novel itself. Yes, it’s uncomfortable but it is distinctly making a point about the disgusting ways people like that can twist and manipulate the innocent acts of children.

Kelly if you responded -It's a possibility- why would you say it was name after that book. That's not a fact ? I've heard that name used in Mexico and it reference to Aneme bcs ppl there like that style. Why would you state it as a fact and not a possibility or opinion?
@lunabundance88
@lunabundance88 2 года назад
Yeah I've seen a few people mention this as an alternative source for the name, but at least in the US in the time frame the lipstick came out, the book was much more known as a reference point than the Japanese fashion style, so I think it makes sense why most people would assume it's from the book. Also given the brand also had an "underage red" shade, I think Kelly is even more justified suggesting it comes from the book, not the style.
@clpds1989
@clpds1989 2 года назад
I remember the celebutard fiasco. That shade had been there for quite awhile but then a deluxe sample was put in a Sephora gift with purchase and then it blew up. It put a real spotlight on that shade and KVD as a whole. Later it was the underage red! I've never purchased from that brand as it never appealed to me and it still doesn't. The only reason they are getting all the hype on Tik Tok is I'm pretty sure they are sponsoring those tiktokers to hype it up.

My favourite series!! The only people buying the brand now are TikTok teenagers, it’s actually funny to see when you’re a bit older and have seen all the different phases of the brand.

I remember when I started getting into makeup was when her anti-vax comments were everywhere. It definitely made me not want to try anything of the brand itself because of her past comments and actions. I didn't want my money to support a company who's head of it had those views or had no problem associating with someone who does. Now, I still don't want to because the company itself still has names like Lolita attached to it now knowing whatbit references.

Absolutely love this series! I haven't bought anything from KVD since the antisemitism & antivaxx stuff was revealed but I applaud the companies ability to cut ties and move on.

There’s still a bad taste in my mouth from this brand. I just can’t shake it. Hopefully one day they change the name because I still associate it to her, and no product has had a pull on me(I’m not on TikTok) to change my mind.

I've always thought the shade name Lolita was in reference to the fashion scene. Did the brand ever clarify which one it meant?

No matter what you think about her as a person, without Kat this brand just isn’t what it used to be. It’s not fun or unique. Before her brand came out it was nearly impossible to buy unique shades of anything. I remember being in high school wanting a deep purple black lipstick and I couldn’t find anything even close. Kat branched out and gave us those types of shades that other “normal” brands were afraid to make and sell. After she introduced “crazy” shades other brands copied her and now I can go out and buy a black lipstick or a green or blue because she broke down the barrier and showed companies that people want unique options. Now that they are KVD they took away most of the fun colors and they are just as boring as any other brand. And she’s not the only brand to have questionable shade names. Nars orgasm anyone?? Or anything from Jeffrey star for that matter. Love her or hate her she did wonders for the makeup community. I have met her a few times and she’s the sweetest most generous person I know. She really doesn’t deserve the hate the media gives her.

My friend made a point depending what we say it can be a slur to a different language. The one thing I'm going miss is there eyeshadow palettes and her art work on them.

I have always thought Kat Von D, and now KVD have really amazing products. However, The anti-semetic stuff I just couldn’t deal with. I have a hard time believing Kat Von d didn’t know what she was doing when she named shades Lolita. She’s very shocking in that manner and she embraces it. I do have a problem with any brand/s that have hyper sexualized or inappropriate shade names. I refuse to buy them. I have children at home and I have to set the example. There’s no reason for it. Nars and Too faced are big offenders in this area. I really appreciate that I can watch your videos with my family and children around, and know that there will be no vulgar language. Great video, love the deep dives!

You make a good point. I don't live with kiddos but the Nars branding etc makes me cringe 😬 I'd rather support brands that don't put effort into calling their products such ridiculous names

I’m the same way. I work in a professional setting, and go to church, if someone were to ask me about my make up, I wouldn’t tell them I’m wearing a make up shade called “orgasm”. I think it’s disgusting that they rely on sex to sell instead of being creative.
@warmgreytenpercent
@warmgreytenpercent 2 года назад
@@AlethrialTheElvenEmpress yes! Why would they even market products like that in the first place?? What is the thinking, that "sexy" names will make us buy more? Lol

@@warmgreytenpercent because, in western culture especially, sex sells. People think that it’s “funny” or “sexy” or “edgy” to wear makeup like that. It’s really not. People enjoy feeling rebellious though.

You can’t force anyone to sell shares, therefore the brand didn’t ask her to step down. She sold them because it’s better to sell then to own (soon to be) worthless shares.
