June 2017 I was flying back from Thailand on Qatar Airways with a connecting flight in Doha, Qatar. This was right after several other countries closed their airspace to Qatar Airways due to allegations of Qatar’s government supporting terrorism (some say it was Russian manipulation seeding distrust). Of course, this forced our flight WAY out of the usual path and it ended up being longer than the longest commercial route that previously existed. We landed at JFK in New York as planned originally but, rather than restrict them from US airspace, they had imposed restrictions that made the flight even more difficult to bear: No laptops, phones, tablets, handheld electronics, etc were allowed on the flight. My New Nintendo 3DS XL was stolen in Thailand but my 3-month-old Nintendo Switch had to stay in the cargo hold. :( Luckily, their planes are posh and were well equipped for entertainment no matter what seats you have. I feel they were the best airline for this to possibly happen to from a passenger’s perspective. :)

@@jazzerson7087 Laser propulsion is less than ideal inside an atmosphere, the reason for this is the same reason why you see the whole sky lit up during the day and not just a white-hot circle of intense light where the sun is. That being that the atmosphere scatters light passing through it though this is much much worse at lower altitudes where the air is thicker. This would require a much larger sail to pick up enough of the beam but this also increases the thrust needed exponentially as the sail also massively increases air drag which leads to a catch 22. Perhaps it could work with a hybrid scramjet to get the plane up high into the stratosphere before unfurling the sail so a satellite can push it but I am not sure and don't feel like doing the math right now.

I am just thankful that I live in a day an age when someone in brazilian middle class (me and family), could afford to fly twice so far over their lifetimes to the other side of the planet (Japan). This took a decade of savings, and both our routes had flyover stops (first one was Toronto and then via Pacific, the second was in Qatar via Atlantic), but if you think about it, just amazing that it's even possible. We're talking about almost literally, the other side of the planet. Parts of Brazil are the closest to being perfect antipodes of parts of Japan. Comparing to how my grandparents and grand grand parents migrated less than 100 years ago from Japan to Brazil, boarding ships that took almost a couple of months to traverse the same distance.... like 50 somethings days to less than 2 including waiting times in the flyover destinations. How the crap. In a single lifetime. It also seems that we're reaching peak optimization there. The interests have shifted to making flight cheaper rather than faster, so this is kind of a glorious moment to be alive in history. xD Man, it's mindblowing... perhaps someday in the distant future we can travel directly through tunnels bore straight through the planet, or some sort of teleportation device, but until then, I'm not exactly expecting another huge leap in prices going down and speeds going up in such a short period of time...

Ironically, a Boeing 707-323C disappeared once during a cargo flight between Tokyo Narita and Rio de Janeiro, in 1979. It just vanished (Varig flight 967). Even worse, for its captain, Gilberto Araujo Da Silva, it was his second near or death in plane driving : he had his first air crash only 6 years before in another 707 that sent ad patres 134 souls. United Economy is literal garbage, I was using a European airline on an 8 hour flight but the new 787 was not yet in use and I believed several aircraft were being refitted so the flight was operated by United. Imagine a domestic flight on United economy and then imagine flying to Europe. While sitting on the plane you are more concerned about whether your legs will have to be amputated upon landing rather than how uncomfortable or crowded it is. The thin prop plane I flew on afterwards on a 40 minute flight was like Emirate airlines compared to the United flight.

Oh man bad memories. I bought flights from Melbourne - Sydney - San Francisco - Washington DC on United because they were a few hundred AUD cheaper than Qantas. Big mistake. Shitty old 747 from MEL-SYD had mechanical issues. So we waited. Then got to Sydney. Boarded. Let's go! Nope, mechanical issues. We sat on the tarmac for hours, with no engines running, getting ever hotter (it was summer) so by the time we departed 7 hours late, the whole plane smelt of body odour. Then it was the bad food, lack of personal entertainment (yes, in 2006, they STILL were using a projector and shared screen for movies). And of course by the time I got to SF the connections were blown. I think I arrived at Washington around 1 in the morning. UNITED. NEVER. AGAIN.

Well Akhil, there are two sets of crew in those flights, as well as a dedicated crew compartment, where they can lay down for a few hours between shifts, so I'm not worrying about them, particularly because they are for the most part young and fit. However passengers are a different story, and that is the point I agree with you. I would be reluctant to let board aging passengers to such a long flight, particularly on economy. The chance to develop potentially lethal or blood-clot induced heart attack, is way too high. I half-joked on another venue, that if I were an airline, I would insist on passengers passing a mandatory medical check-up over a certain age, before I'd let those on board.

And all the hassle of unboarding and reboarding. Not everyone has lounge access. If the flight basically has BC or PE only (like Singapore) that's a great option.

As an Australian, the issue with the Perth to London one shot flight, is that most travelers live on the east coast, not the west coast, and more often then not you have to either fly to Perth the night before, and fly out the next morning, or fly in in the morning, and not fly out untill that night. So untill we get straight shot's from Melbourne/Sydney it's still a bad system

Premium economy, which isn't cheap, but still much less than Qantas (which admittedly many say is one of the best PE available) and even Singapore's versions. I did BA once, and never again. They were dreadful. Unless you're going to London, Qantas really isn't the best option IMO. Even if you are, they are significantly more expensive unless you can get a special rate booking a year or more in advance. As for the Perth direct flight, for the vast majority of Aussies Perth itself is 5+ hours to reach, more once you add travel to the airport etc. No reason to do that flight from the East coast, and I'm surprised to see the load rate is as high as you said. How about this 6,000 miles, non-stop in-country flight?? Takes around 14 hours. St. Petersburg ➡️ Vladivostok

My step brother's Ex-wife took that flight fairly regularly. Her family live on Sakhalin, literally about as far from St. Petersburg as you can get while still being in Russia.
