Batsheva recently showed its Fall/Winter 2024 line and hired only mature models. All runway models were 40 years or older. Is this a gimmick, a trend, or a lasting change?

Batsheva Hay’s Rules to Live By
1) Always listen at least as much as you talk.
2) Never take the way you look or dress too seriously. Dressing, hair, and makeup are meant to be fun and anyone who makes you feel otherwise is not worth hanging around.
3) Always try it on if you're curious or attracted to it. I have fallen in love with so many dresses only after putting them on my body.
4) Never forget the clothing lurking in the back of your closet. That old t-shirt from high school might be ripe for rediscovery, and it feels so good to shop your own closet.
5) Always share a dessert. You know you want a bite.

YES YES YES!!!!!! What an excellent video, Beth. First, thrilled to see 40+ women walk the runway. Many times we are the women with the 💰, so I feel like we should be featured in that type of arena. But, your comments on the quality of clothing nowadays really struck a chord with me. This is something that I’ve talked about with friends over the last few years. I don’t rely on the same stores that I have for years, because the quality just isn’t there anymore. Very sad!

Jessica, yes!! It’s so real. I wasn’t sure if I should leave my tangent in but then I thought 🤷‍♀️ I can’t be the only one thinking this. I totally agree that it feels right to see representation especially when we might be the customer.

The quality becomes so much more important as time goes by. I appreciate the facts of women having the money and power to decide what and where to spend our earnings. I don’t want to spend my money on garbage. I work hard, I’ve worked hard and I totally respect the work ethic behind well designed fashion objects and sustainable design in fashion and in life. This is on my radar.

For years now women have been vocal about wanting to see the clothes/makeup/underwear we wear on people we recognize. I think that that is partly why youtube has become such an important platform. And, it sounds so logical to me that you would want to appeal to the demographic that actually has the disposable income to afford the products you are selling. Great video Beth!

Most of the clothing that I own is from LL Bean and Madewell, pretty much solely because I have not found any other clothing lines where the quality is not absolutely abysmal. (Wanting to buy petite sizes in size L/XL is another limiting factor .). I would really like to find some dressier clothing that is well-made and that is made for my size, even at a high price, but companies seem to be having a really hard time offering that.

Yes, those are still brands that seem to offer moderate pricing on decent clothing. I’m struggling too-my biggest miss is tailored wool pants. Are they just not a thing anymore?

The older I get, the more I hate shopping for clothes. Besides the poor quality, everything is made for teens & 20 somethings. What about the rest of us?! As a 90s girl myself, I am glad to see wide leg jeans back in style though 😄

Same!! I actually repurchased my beloved Sonic Youth Washing Machine concert T to wear with wider leg jeans. It just feels right!

I love the older models. It is a good choice for retailers, they are appealing to the demographic with the most money to buy the designers clothes. I agree with you about the modern fabrics available to the rest of us.

I"m also very cognizant of a garment's quality and find that Brooks Brothers still makes well-constructed clothes out of natural fabrics.

I’m glad to hear this. I used to be a more avid BB shopper, and it’s been a while. I still wear a lovely navy merino sweater I bought from them in maybe 2010. I remember loving their Oxford cloth shirts.

I feel like it’s not just fast fashion that has exploded, but fast everything. Everything is junk these days. It’s so hard to buy anything that is good quality - bedding, small appliances, furniture, and of course clothing. I find it so frustrating. Right now we are looking for a new indoor grill/griddle. I don’t mind paying more for excellent quality, but it seems that just doesn’t exist. At some point we all decided to just settle for cheap, and low quality, so that makers of good quality items just aren’t there anymore. I find myself making do with less and less because I’d rather have nothing than crappy quality items.

OMG yes-everything has been cheapened. I am fairly certain it all goes back to Private Equity buyouts, but I’m sure it has a lot to do with the diminishing of resources and the increasing demand. Basically, we should try to consume less and use our stuff for longer. I’m with you on going without, but it’s so challenging when you actually need something. Do not get me started on bedding 😂😂😂😂

everyone no matter the age should have at least a few good quality garments they just look and wear better. i like to see the more mature models in items i would consider purchasing.

Hi sweet Beth. First and foremost, you look stunning! Love the topic of this video. It's about time that the runways are featuring women over 40. And why stop there? Loewe bags and clothing are stunning. Great that they chose Maggie Smith as their model. I agree with you. The quality of clothing has gone way down. I'm going off subject in a way, but myself and my daughter will only but my 2 year old grandson in natural fabrics, down to his bedding. This was a fabulous video. Bravo, Beth. Big hugs.
