As kid i watch a lot thinks before i knew what anime was like Voltron and others, but my first anime it was Rurouni Kenshin, is when i thought for the first time that a "cartoon" it can be not only funny but it can had other aspects, like Drama, a better type of Action, it was so different and it still is

Yup. Have to give Adultswim its credit. It helped introduced a lot of fans to more mature anime characters and stories, long before we had the option of streaming services. As great as a lot of our introductory anime on Toonami was, American networks still aimed them at younger audiences
I remember toonami and aldo ytv had an anime block on Fridays and i think Saturdays. it was 11pm to 2am. i remember dbz and.sailor moon during the day, but that night hours was Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and a few others that would change
I also want to thank Adult Swim for their part in making English dubbing so much better than it was back in the mid to late 90’s. It’s like the distributors respected the work and wanted the dubs to do the source material justice!
I remember when I first got into anime most people kept quiet about their interest in it but nowadays people talk about it openly and advertisements for it are more common than they used to be. I’m happy to be living in the age of technology where we can access anime soon after it airs and don’t have to buy the Blu-ray disks to watch episodes.

I gotten into anime back in middle school in 96 and everybody hated me for liking anime. They see me as a freak just because I like watching anime and most of them wanted me dead. I'm a grown ass adult and to this day I still love watching anime. Haters are going to hate but we otakus will live forever live on

@@garrettevans9193 Yes Godzilla, the iconic monster that destroys Tokyo and fights other monsters. There have been 2 Godzilla anime made. One a series that came out last year called Godzilla Singular Point and the other a trilogy of anime films. Neither are that great.
Anime will always be in my memories, some Pokémon shows, Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, and Yugioh are the ones I remembered so much back then!!!

Honestly nobody was made fun of in my elementary, middle, and high school for watching anime, video games, or geeky stuff like superheroes. I mean it was everywhere. On walls, class watching anime, art class drawing some anime, teachers playing videogames, etc. ... I am grateful for being apart of early gen Z. :)
DBZ and anime was very common with kids of the TV of the 80’s and 90’s. These kids grew up and are now in their 30’s-40’s and are the nostalgia mainstream of today.
For me, growing up and going to school in the early 2000’s, there were two types of anime fans, the “nerds” who usually get picked on, and the more rougher, “ghetto minorities” group, who will fight back against bullies! I hanged out with both groups at school and often talk about anime with them! Good times!
@@Deviant69 well jojo is more famous with people already well versed in the world of anime, Its probably the one of the worst anime to get into the culture, the starting 9 eps are really slow and bad compared to the rest of the series, these days the 3 episode rule makes it very difficult for the newbies
I was in middle school when I discovered Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z. As far as tv though another not often brought up program was Scifi Channel's Saturday Anime block which would air the more adult anime movies like Akira, Project A-ko, Vampire Hunter D and Robot Carnival to name a few. This was half a decade before Adult Swim came on the scene.I was also a watcher of Toonami during high school as well as Pokemon. Started going to a local anime club when anime fansubs on VHS were still in use. Also, went to scifi conventions with anime programming and later anime cons. So the rise of anime in the 90's was a big deal throughout my teen years. I was a fan when anime was still a niche all the way to becoming a pop culture phenomenon.
Compare the Big 3 OG Anime to the Justice League Trilogy: Dragon Ball Z is Batman, Pokemon is Superman and Sailor Moon is Wonder Woman. Yeah, it's crazy but it's seems true.
Anime had done more than what this video can focus on. It had help to inspire change in how animated films are made today. For example, the 1990's Batman animated series and its spinoff Batman Beyond have some elements of anime noticeable in each of the the two series.

Chris Sabats: Casting couch accusations. Chris .S & Sean .S: The apparent "outtake" called the sacred ointment. Chris & Sean : implying another VA was a child predator because they did the voices of many young characters. This is just the very tip of the iceberg.
I was watching anime back in the late 70s early 80s, with Astro Boy, Speed Racer and Gatchaman. We had a hard time finding manga, it was super rare and hard to find.

In my high school/ middle school there was a specific group people who were obsessed with anime (myself included) AND NOW EVERYONE WATCHES ATTACK ON TITAN. We used to get made fun off for watching anime🤣
I would add that I find fascinating how the anime history is different from latin america's perspective. We had a lot of anime in the 70s and 80s like heidi, candy candy, princesa caballero, robinson family and many more. For instance, Japan and México had always had a friendly relationship even so that we got to enjoy many animes without the edits. Dragon Ball is even part of our pop culture. And I would say Latin America was determinant for the success it has in America nowadays.
I got my friend into it a few years ago when it was still a subject youd be outdcasted for. They asked me why I watched it cause they thought it was a very childlike genre. Then I showed him the scene where killua ripped the heart out of that serial killer and he was like "OH"
@@Deviant69 at the time, I defended the movie for being the only anime movie to not suck completely But then it came Alita: Battle Angel, and it served as replacement. But I blame Arad for the whitewashing and the PG-13 rating
I think not including series that were extremely popular in countries other than the US is a major oversight. Series like Saint Seiya and Cardcaptor Sakura - just to mention a few - changed the game in countries like Brazil, France and Mexico.
Did you know about the undubbed seasons of some anime 4Kids never got to? There was the later half of Tokyo Mew Mew (Mew Mew Power), a whole nother season of Ojamajo Doremi (Magical DoReMj), season 4 of YGO GX and 5Ds. They had the rights to Futari wa Precure (which is successful franchise in Japan now to the likes of Toei's other original IPs like Kamen Rider and Sentai) but Magical DoReMi didn't do so hot and all they wanted from that deal was One Piece
I hope we get a tease of DBS2. Having the Moro arc in anime would be something I buy that for a Zeni. Gohan and Piccolo better be more prominent/relevant as they were in the Tournament of Power arc.

Early to Mid 80's is when I got into anime with Voltron and my ultimate favourite Robotech, then in the 90's Record of the Lodoss War, Slayers, Akira, Ghost in the Shell.
i feel like anime is a lot better then american cartoons because anime helped everyone through really bad times and it's our escapism from reality and as someone who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon and Pokemon before i knew what "anime" was at the time and during the early 2000's Adult Swim pretty much helped bring mature anime on back in the good old days then there's Yu-Gi-Oh that came on KidsWB every saturday morning from 8:00am - 11:00am when i was a kid back when saturday morning cartoons were very decent in our childhoods but that's until many years later i got older when One Punch Man came on Toonami (i used watch it back in the day) that got me seriously into anime and now i mostly watched subbed anime because english dubs just wasn't that good. as for manga well it's a long story.
I think the biggest reason at least in the 90s anime took off is because American animation was expensive and the broadcasters needed SOMETHING to put on air. The answer, import it from Japan, hire Canadian voice actors for dirt cheap, edit it to meet USA standards, call it a show, and collect the profits. It was lazy AND effective at the same time.
I personally think that the popularity of the Godzilla series, Astro Boy, Speed Racer, led to creators at Dic, and Saban bringing the likes of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball to the west. And of couse Pokemon. Between that and the Miramax Gibli releases led to the 90s anime boom
To be honest I am thankful to a friend of mine whom opened my eyes and told me about anime and from the last 6 years I had been watching anime and reading manga

I mean it doesn’t surprise me at one time kids got picked on for liking comic books and now the number one one of all time is a superhero movie. Anime wasn’t far behind just glad I’m around to witness it
I was 1 of those kids who bought dbz fansubbed tapes. 10 bucks was about 7 episodes per tape. I bought all the z episodes, all the gt episodes and all the movie/specials.
