If you're a Facebook or Instagram user you may have noticed an increasing number of strange looking wood sculptures or art images popping up. What I'm referring to is images created by Artificial Intelligence with the posters trying to pass them off as genuine, physical art in order to get likes, shares and perhaps even scam people.
In this video I talk about the rise of fake wood sculptures in order to try and educate people a little more on the world of AI art and talk about how to spot it, what can be done about it and how I feel about its use in the art world.
Thank you for viewing, check out the various links below if you'd like to see what else I get up to.

Stopped using FB found it a bit disheartening thinking it was possible to achieve some of these AI images,I only watch RU-vid tutorials and give it a go, just found your channel and its given me the inspiration to pick up my tools again cheers 👍

I agree 1000%, we should stop calling it A.I. art, it just A.I. pictures. What I'm also worried about is that this kills creativity for our next generation, even for kids now. Why start to draw, carf, paint, write if any numnut gets more likes and more money with A.I. pictures. I see A.I. pictures being sold as exclusive prints (signed by the artists!) and I have also seen Magazine covers with A.I. pictures...it's going to kill our creatitvity for sure and 'cause a massive unemployment wave over the world in the next decade.

I think you're right, calling it AI art is problematic considering there's none of the art process involved in making it really. It may stunt the creativity of a generation... I'm not sure what can be done against it, seems almost like an inevitability at this point

Thanks 🙏 for this … Artists of every medium have to deal with this inundation of AI on their feeds every day. Coincidentally it was researching one of those “I made this!” surreal too-good-to-be-true wood sculptures (with 2,000+ shares) that brought me to your video.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I personally think it's a huge problem. Not even for the fact it kills the chance of real wood art and the hard working artists ever seeing the light, but for a more fundamental reason. It's the same old story that is killing society and has everything to do with what I'm calling 'social media capitalism'. It's a the same issue that advertisement creates. Basically, an incentive to lie in order to gain money. That's what it is at the core. I left FB some 6 months ago and 2 years off it before that. I came back to see if had become better but was shocked to see just how much worst it had gotten. My feed was something around 50-90% ads and posts from people I was not friends with and never would be. Basically one big advertisement and commercial shitshow. I couldn't even use the plat form for what we were all promised it was designed for...to connect with people who you want to connect with. FB went corrupt some time ago and is taking advantage of people as much as they possibly can. ...sadly, youtube is not much better. I feel actual disgust just seeing the thumbnails so clearly designed to be misleading and or 'trapping'. Countless videos have fake thumbnails. Intentionally designed so the viewer will watch the whole video looking for the thumbnail image. So they can get that view time and get paid more. It's all about money. The world will always be a disgusting shitshow as long as we have a monetary system. The ones who actually do hard creative work and create new products are slaves to talentless 'businessmen' type, many actual psychopaths.
@ClintRoseCarving
@ClintRoseCarving 8 месяцев назад
You definitely have a good point and unfortunately I think you're right in a lot of ways. My Facebook is certainly filled with many more ads than it used to be oh and RU-vid is definitely catered towards tricking people with misleading thumbnails and titles. I suppose I just try and remain positive about it but that is getting increasingly more difficult to do.

I'm not an FB user so perhaps that's why I haven't been exposed to a lot of this stuff but what I have seen seems to display a very similar 'sheen' or quality of image. And I think this illustrates my general feeling about AI - the key word is 'artificial'. Somehow artificial products are detectable by the discerning eye (or taste buds in the case of artificial cream) As you pointed out, all those images have a dreamlike (sometimes nightmarish) quality which is a product of the programmer's idea of how these collections of existing images ought to look when the process is complete. Even if AI is somehow perfected, whatever that might mean, it will probably still be detectable. The maker, lover or even just keen dabbler in art will always have that sense of discernment. So it might be very clever but, in the words of an old remark, is it Art? Cheers Clint, I enjoyed this one lot.
@ClintRoseCarving
@ClintRoseCarving 8 месяцев назад
Thanks mate, and you're right it is easy to spot once you get used to it and the 'sheen' is a great way to describe it. I do worry that things will slowly improve and it will be programmed to add imperfections but hopefully, like you say, we'll always be able to notice that it's artificial, I hope that's the case! I don't think I class AI art as art but just as a tool, like a seach engine for images almost. But I know that a lot of people would be against me on that one.

I don't use these social media platforms. So this is really the first I'm seeing of these images. As you say, they're convincing at a quick glance. I imagine the best we can hope for is some sort of regulatory change, mandating that platforms must clearly label content as AI generated where this is true. Meanwhile, I'll be reading paper books, making boxes with hand tools, sculpting miniatures with putty, drinking brown beer with twigs in down the local pub, and generally being a grumpy old fart.
@ClintRoseCarving
@ClintRoseCarving 8 месяцев назад
You're probably better off not using social media platforms to be honest! I think it might go that way eventually, maybe with AI having to have some kind of watermark or digital signature. As for being a grumpy old fart that is the English way after all, doing your country proud.

Hello Clint, i´m a artist too, it´s really a concerning issue. I think the solution (at least for now) is the carver artist show the process of carving prodution to their social media followers. AI is something inevitable to enter in our lives and it´s a matter of time that people goes to understand the difference between the real and the fake. AI will force people to distinguish the right from wrong. Whenever a new technology emerges, there will always be an adaptation period. Keep the gooood work Clint of open the peoples eyes!!!

It seems to me if AI can flood the Internet with fake images pretty soon those people who have real art self created. Art are gonna have a lot harder time getting it to the public and getting it to be seen unless there’s “a certification of authentic websites, which would be circumvented also.

I think you may be right, it could be a mixture of fake comments with real comments. Unfortunately I think a lot of people don't pay too much attention when liking or commenting on something but I'm glad to see more and more people calling the posts out as scams in the comments.

All we need is an AI system to control a CNC machine to convert a virtual carving into an actual carving complete with the slight imperfections of a human carver and we are done for. No one will pay the price for a genuine hand make carving when they can have their own indistinguishable copy physically made by a machine for a fraction of the price. Think I'll have to go and stack shelves at Tesco for a living as AI would not stoop to such a menial task (no offence to Tesco employees). It's bad enough having to compete with cheap eastern carvings which are 90% machine cut and just hand finished. I need sleep!
@ClintRoseCarving
@ClintRoseCarving 8 месяцев назад
Haha you're absolutely right, once that handmade touch can be added to carvings at will....that's gonna be bad news! Not sure what we can do about it to be honest!

The main problem with this is the millions of people out there with no ability to critically think who interact with and share these posts multiple times without recognising any pattern in the style and composition of the images or the manipulative language used. These people are allowed to drive cars, raise children and vote. As an artist myself, I'm more concerned with the future of civilization than a perceived devaluation of my labour.
@ClintRoseCarving

I think mostly it's a new technology fooling mostly the older generation, but I do get your point and it was the reason I made this video in the hope that people who see it won't be fooled again.

SSDD with the AI large crocheted "sculptures" . Then the people who really do incredible creative pieces get slapped. Don't forget the well known works of art and IPs getting swiped to make the AI images. The new form of theft.

You know, that is true - I liked a couple of the owl carvings. But educate me here; doesn't AI trawl the web to find existing examples of work that fits the description and then mash them together to make something 'new'? If that's how it works then real examples of these kinds of work actually exist. So it's actually Artificial Plagiarism!
@mf--
@mf-- 8 месяцев назад
@@MarkMcCluney diffusion models started as image sharpening tools. They come into focus from pure noise after training to come into focus on source data. That combination allows the software to come into focus on "wood carving" and "owl" at the same time. The billions of images within the training data allows the software to come into focus on many images simultaneously. The software is absolutedly based on unlicensed and misappropriated data scraped from the internet.
@ClintRoseCarving
@ClintRoseCarving 8 месяцев назад
I think you could call it plagiarism and in fact some illustrators have seen their work somewhat duplicated using AI. For instance, if someone is a fairly well known artist, you could type "please create an image of a painting of a church in the style of van Gogh".
@mf--
@mf-- 8 месяцев назад
@@ClintRoseCarving The report "Diffusion Art or Digital Forgery? Investigating Data Replication in Diffusion Models" had the conclusion that "copies do appear to occur often enough that their presence cannot be safely ignored" with approximate 1.88% of the generated images being mathematically at least .5 similar to source images (training data / artist/photographer/etc stolen work). Much more recently the artist Loish's name could be used in the "ethical" image generator that Adobe added to photoshop, highlighting how it was also trained using scraped data from the internet.
