In the Final years of the First Age, the forces of the Valar finally came to aid the Free People of Middle-Earth in their war against Morgoth, and they were joined by a faction of Men known as the Edain. As a reward for their help, the Edain were given many gifts including a special home which they would call Numenor, and the Numenoreans would become the greatest faction of Men, being the longest lived, the most technologically advanced and having the greatest armada that was ever seen in the history of Middle-Earth. In today's episode we'll be discussing the rise of Numenor from the days of their first king called Elros the Half Elven, to their 11th ruler called Minatir, who led the Numenoreans in their war against Sauron.

Hey guys, I'm sorry for delaying this video, but it took me ages to research and prepare, and it's also my longest video yet. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic! Do you think it was possible for Numenor to sustain their glory without eventually growing corrupted? And do you think that we'll get to see these events in the upcoming Lord of the Rings Amazon series? As always subtitles are available and feedback is welcome. I'd also like to thank one of my fellow Lord of the Rings creators called The Red Book for he was kind enough to give me some feedback on some of my research for this topic. If you'd like to check his channel out, I've left a link to it in the video description!

hey man unfortunately it was impossible for me to balance narration and studies since it was by far the biggest bottleneck in the video production in terms of time, though I think the current narrator is doing an excellent job and deserves a lot of credit (after all it's only thanks to his contributions that I'm able to still publish freqently). I do plan to still have my voice on this channel, though it's probably going to be in form of live content (which I should have much more of in the coming future)

I'm a Tolkien addict of several decades now so I know his tales extremely well. I can't think how many different summaries and analyses of Tolkien's work that I've listened to on YT. What amazes me is how well each new player in this wonderful game conveys their own rendition with such engaging originality of style. I was totally captivated with this retelling and I really look forward to the next episode.

"Guards were set at the haven of Moriondë in the east of the land, where the rocks are dark, watching at the king’s command without ceasing for the ships’ return. It was night, but there was a bright Moon. They descried ships far off, and they seemed to be sailing west at a speed greater than the storm, though there was little wind. Suddeniy the sea became unquiet; it rose until it became like a mountain, and it rolled upon the land. The ships were lifted up, and cast far inland, and lay in the fields. Upon that ship which was cast highest and stood dry upon a hill there was a man, or one in man’s shape, but greater than any even of the race of Númenor in stature. ‘He stood upon the rock and said: ‘This is done as a sign of power. For I am Sauron the mighty, servant of the Strong” (wherein he spoke darkly). “I have come. Be glad, men of Númenor, for I will take thy king to be my king, and the world shall be given into his hand.” And it seemed to men that Sauron was great; though they feared the light of his eyes. To many he appeared fair, to others terrible; but to some evil. [J.R.R Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, The Lost Road and Other Writings, p.73-74] I like this verse. Sauron is literally toying with the 'mighty' Numenoreans lol

Both Tale of Years in LotR and Unfinished Tales specifically say that Tar-Minastir was the king who sent the fleet to help Gil-Galad in 1700, even though the Heirs of Elros in UT says that Tar-Telperien ruled until 1731. It will be interesting to see how the Amazon series will explain this discrepancy. My guess is that there will be a political strife between isolationists and interventionists in Numenor that will lead to Tar-Telperien temporarily abdicating the throne.

I may be alone in this, but I feel a great deal of empathy towards the Numenorians even when they attacked the Valar. Manwe, how can you impose a ban without coming off as a tyrant? Treating humans as children that need to be protected from themselves is almost insulting. There's something exciting about humans marching in revolt against their gods, while in fact they were subjugated by an evil god themselves.

Better to have the promise of a greater, immortal place to believe in than to know the world the immortal elves would live in forever. Makes Arda seem like a prison for the elves, why would mankind want it since the creator didn't even live there and had made another place for you? It really means mankind had little faith; but if you know for a fact that immortals exist and they don't claim to have made the world, than the one that does can be banked on.

I feel pity for the numenorians because they showed the great capacity of what humans can achieve when united together for a singular purpose or goal but their fear of death slowly changed their outlook on life and like many of us in this life they no longer appreciated what they had and it caused their eventually defeat.
@ScreenFiends
@ScreenFiends 3 года назад
To be fair, this is a classic case of some immortal God promising something but seemingly misunderstanding the flaws of it's own creations. As in letting men suffer disease, death and ruin while never actually showing up to support that they will ever receive anything better. Meanwhile their elvin bretheren live long, healthy lives as well as having mysterious powers. Kind of negligent

@AnnaMarianne

Because it's a gift of freedom. Men don't belong to the world, they are only visitors in it. Their ultimately destiny is somewhere else. Because of this, as long as they're not afraid of death and don't cling onto the world in panic, they're free of the world and free of destiny, free to use their short time in it as they please. But when you lose your sight of this larger picture, of the unknown adventure that awaits you after you pass on, or you lose your faith in Eru's good intentions and good plans for you in that unknown adventure, then your gaze turns solely to the world - it starts to look like the only thing you have, and you become bitter and jealous that you have less in it and less of it than the Elves. Elves, by the way, are actually in the same boat. Their existence in this world might be unending... but this world isn't unending. They know one day this world will be scrapped, and they don't know, what happens to *them* then. So they too have to just trust that Eru has good intentions for them.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 3 года назад
In war it's certainly an advantage because it means men aren't as celibate and prudish as the elves. Elf birth rate is almost none existant as they don't die unless killed. So every elf soldier who dies in battle is pretty much a permanent loss. Men die anyway so even if they lose a huge amount of soldiers or their kingdom takes a tremendous blow. In about a century they will have recovered.

Something I wish Tolkien had done a better job of; taking the polish off of the elves. Eru Illuvatar wanted the two peoples to be different, yet when the time came to reward the loyal Edain, it was done by making them more elf-like, as if that would make them even more jealous later. If he could change them, then why not even more, they might ask, and make them even more like the elves? He let the elves live in the Undying Lands, but also on Middle Earth, yet the Men were denied this same gift. The elves were basically perfect, and it got annoying. We understand that there were legitimate reasons why Men couldn't live in Aman or Valinor; it wasn't made for them, and they would have suffered there. The elves also eventually had to return, or diminish, so they couldn't just spend eternity in Middle Earth, but they could stay a long time, and many did, erecting another double standard. When the elves had to leave, it never seemed to trouble them as much as it could have. Did they have no attachment? Would they not regret forever carrying just the memories of someone they knew they'd never see again? It was bad that the Men would come to curse their own gifts, and lust after those of the elves, but even though both were made by Eru Illuvatar, the perfect elves never seemed to struggle with their gifts, or want other things, and it just added to the perfect image they are sometimes gated for. Maybe if they had seemed more like a scale in balance, and leas like a climbing peak, with the elves alone at the top, things would have been better, or if the elves had just always been in the Undying Lands, where they seemed to belong, instead of also being in Middle Earth, seemingly without consequence (though there were), they wouldn't have seemed like such a great thing to aspire to, and more Men would have been happy with their lot. Maybe not; they are based somewhat on real humans, and we can be selfishly greedy at the best of times, but... As a second, how did the Numenorians "strengthen" their navy? Apart from just building more boats, and maybe figuring out better sails, I don't get it. Even dwarves never figured out cannon, I don't think, and most people's Magic was subtle, or downplayed. I doubt they had casters setting fire to enemy ships, or devout people calling on the Valar to affect the seas, so then it just seems they'd sail alongside other ships, board and savage, and be done. As well, I'm uncertain who else had a decent navy to fight, some nor the elves? Oh well.

I will only quote from Tolkien's works. In the Silmarilion, it is said when Men awoke, the Valar did not know this. Morgoth gound the place that Man awoke, and sent his servants to spread roumor and fear into the hearts of Men. This seed would spread even to the Edain. In the Second Age, when some of the Edain went to Numenor. Alas, the works of Morgoth do ever fester, and the Dunedain began to become unsettled by their mortality and the Ban of the Valar. This led to Numenor's down fall.

I would pay to watch a whole new show in general (or mini series) of the history of Numenor. If they make it exactly how the Tolkien family wrote the story (ancient Western European as well) it would be immortalized throughout history (as well as break numbers) like what happened to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

If I could travel to any place and time in Middle Earth's history, I would go to Númenor in the Second Age and try to prevent its corruption. A Númenor that never rebels against the Valar and is never destroyed could have stopped Sauron in its tracks.

This was very well done so thank you. I worry about any tv serialisation of any well loved literature. The Witcher being a good example. I wait to be surprised by Amazon although my hopes are not high. Too often well loved section's are butchered. Others are omitted entirely. A myriad of excuses pour forth. I suspect Amazon will try and follow GOT's sex and violence route to try and sell it to the lowest common denominator. Going back to Numenor, if they had turned their eyes east instead of west they could have done great things. They could have ventured to the far south and brought vast areas under their purview. Stalling Sauron and weakening his influence. Of course this is all dependent on what they do once Sauron is captured. I imagine it wasn't within their strength to execute Sauron. Personally I would have delivered him to Aman and said here you go, one of your own, you deal with him.

Oh, and he has 3 minor design patents to his name. Everything else he has bought... Ironically, the name of his purchased car company is "Tesla" when "Edison" would be far more fitting...

Personally. I don't trust Amazon of the makers to do a good or creditable job to the upcoming series. There's already to much political screeching and other nonsenses, to subvert and ruin the franchise. And I don't trust as mentioned, the makers or Amazon, to have any backbone to keep the series original, true to the sources of Tolkien's work and clean. Gatekeep! Always Gatekeep!
