The opening sequence of tales from the darkside gave me the creeps as a kid and set the perfect mood. It is iconic. I also loved Friday the 13th the series and consider it to be sort of a prototype for the xfiles in that it centered around the adventures of a cast of main characters that you actually cared about.

My fav anthology series was Friday the 13th . I loved how every episode was about a diff cursed object an the 3 people had to try and hunt it down and lock it up . I Always loved the tales from the crypt show as well . I remember recording it on my sisters vhs player late at night and then watching the tape when I got home .😊

Let me tell you, as a kid/teen who didn't have cable until the last year of the decade, horror anthologies played in our house every week. My favorites were Tales from the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt (when I could catch it), Freddy's Nightmares, and thanks for including it, Monsters. They offer good thrills and chills that stuck with me. Thanks again for this series.

Every Sunday I tell myself “I’m gonna get my machete and hockey mask and head to the nearest camp” but every Monday you put out another great new episode and I tell myself “let’s just see how this week goes”. Here’s hoping you don’t miss a Monday and here’s hoping the algorithms have a sense of humor!

I LOVE old school horror anthology shows. “Tales From The Crypt” is one of the main reasons why I’m a horror fan. My mother introduced me to the show when I was a child, and we would watch TFTC marathons together whenever the show would come on TV. I also watched “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and “Goosebumps”. As I got older, I ended up watching “The Twilight Zone”, “Tales From The Darkside”, “Monsters” and “Night Gallery”. And eventually, I even watched “Freddy’s Nightmares”. The crazy thing is I initially didn’t like the show because it seemed a little too facetious at times. But, I gave it a chance, and ended up enjoying it. Say, does “Unsolved Mysteries” also count as a horror anthology? My mother and I watched that as well.

My family had a copy of the episode on VHS for years that I must have watched thousands of times. Even though I haven't seen it in decades, it's still stuck in my memory. It had some horror elements with a bit of some dark humor to it, too. Just thinking about it takes me back to being a kid in the 80s.

One thing I learned in later years, and have come to respect as a fan of the original, was how the 80's Twilight Zone series had the showrunners right a 25 year wrong done to a masterful writer. Turns out, A GAME OF POOL, a great episode featuring Jack Klugman and Johnathan Winters, had its ending altered. Much to the chagrin of George Clayton Johnson, who wrote the teleplay for A GAME OF POOL. SPOILERS: the early 60's original saw Jessie beat Fats Brown, only to find himself in the same position in his own afterlife. Having his soul go back down to Earth whenever some youngster wished to prove his prowess at the pool hall. In the 80's revival, Jessie lost the game to Fats. The ingenious twist being that despite losing to Fats, he got to stay alive. Living with the shame of losing to a legend. This was the ending Johnson originally penned. Never found out why they went with the ending they did for the 60's version. Just appreciated that the showrunners of the revival filmed the original ending for the remake...❤

The 80’s Twilight Zone episode that scared me the most was the one with ending scene with the giant spider in the elevator. I haven’t seen it since it showed on tv back then, the image of the spider and the flashlight with blood dripping at the bottom of the elevator shaft will stay with me forever.

We need another period like this, where horror anthologies rule the airwaves!! I remember several of these. The Amazing Stories episode discussed on here, go to the head of the class, i remember seeing that when i was only 3 years old!! It's one of my earliest memories, & i just remember it scaring the crap outta me!! I also remember the '85 Twilight Zone reboot, & the Hitchcock presents reboot. I only saw the first season of the Hitchcock presents reboot, that aired on one of the major networks, i forget which one. At the time, i thought that the opening retro footage of Hitchcock himself, was current footage, but i remember my mom always reassuring me that he was already dead. I never knew of the existence of Freddy's Nightmares or Monsters, until i discovered them on Chiller, in the late 2000s. I definitely remember Tales From the Crypt in its original run. Sadly, i also missed out on Bradbury's Theater, in its original run, & only remember seeing one episode, in the '90s, Mars is Heaven. So when i stumbled upon the entire series, at Walmart, i grabbed it, oyt of curiousity, & ended up loving the series. I now own RBT, Amazing Stories, & Tales From the Darkside, all on home video! I've been trying to get my hands on Freddy's Nightmares, as well.

Ok, you are like the fifth person I have seen in these comments mentioning that, and it freaked me out, too. Something about the music intro gave me this totally creeped out feeling, and to this day, I don't know why. I could watch the show, but I would bury my head and cover my ears when I heard that intro come on. It's nice to know that it wasn't just me who felt that way back then. Makes me wonder why it had that effect on so many people in the first place.

Btw, Dark Room was on ABC, not NBC. My favorites of the titles you covered have to be the TLes From The.... anthology series. Darkside and Crypt were both amazing. One of the best from Darkside has to be Word Processor Of The Gods. A harried husband and father received an old school computer from his nephew just before the kid's untimely death. A great story that can appeal to anyone who thinks about opportunity missed. I believe Stephen King wrote it.

I also recommend the early-‘70s British movie adaptations of Tales From the Crypt. The first one featured Ralph Richardson, one of the biggest Shakespearean stage actors of his era, as the Crypt Keeper! The second movie, titled “The Vault of Horror,” had one of its story adaptations starring Tom Baker, shortly before he became Doctor Who.

I just watched Freddy's Nightmares while it was on Tubi in the last year. Such a fun series. So many good episodes, but my favorite was the 2 parter 'Bloodlines' & 'Do you know where your kids are?' And because each episode had 2 stories already it meant this was a 4 parter (20 mins each) and each part kept getting better and better.

Mad props for giving "The hitchhiker" sometime👌 there was one show I think it was the early 90s or 80s and I think it was either on Showtime, or Cinemax. I think it was called "Phantasms" the intro was a shot of a purple colored storm clouds and they quoted Edgar Allan Poe with the "dream within a dream" line. I had one episode on tape and I think it had Megan Tilly, or her sister playing a vampire who befriends a young daughter of a well-to-do aristocrat plantation or something. I would love to track down that series.. If I even got the name right!?😂👌

I would look daily to check the tv guide to see what i could set the video to record. Some favourites of mine were Twilight Zone, Hitchcock presents, friday 13th the series, outer limits as well as non anthologhy series like V, nick night and werewolf. Tales From the Crypt is the GOAT of Tv anthology horror, I really dug Tales From the Darkside too but it’s low budget was evident in its later seasons. Freddy’s Nightmares might be the most frustrating anthology series ever, cause it wouldn’t have taken much to make it good. The problems with the episodes were things often didn’t make sense. And they’d have two stories that are loosely connected that also didn’t line up.

I discovered the original The Twilight Zone on the local UHF station and Ray Bradbury short stories in the library when I was really young and right from the beginning Tales From The Darkside was such a great successor/continuation of those for me. The great thing about the true anthology series was that if an episode didn't work that was okay--there'd be a completely different one coming soon.

@@JessicaDwyerQuite true, despite a lost opportunity that would have led to the 2 franchises being connected. Story goes that the final season of FT13 was supposed to have had several more episodes. One of them would have included Jason's hockey mask as a cursed object from the Curio shop!

@@JoseMorales-lw5nt yep I heard that rumor too. Sadly they went with retro aging Ryan and the poor new guy that no one remembers name. Johnny? I loved F13 the series tho. It fed my Canadian actor love and had Nigel Bennett playing an undead Nazi who became a right wing radio host.

Actually, the short lived series DARKROOM, aired on ABC, not NBC. The only episode I watched of that show was the Vietnam vet being terrorized by his kid's toy soldiers.

I've never gotten the impression tales from the darkside was considered one of the best horror anthologies, it's reviews seem to suggest a real mixed reception maybe even leaning negative.

Oops. Maybe I missed something but I don't recall Tales of the Unexpected being mentioned. It's a British show that ran from 1979 to 1988.

The Bruce Willi episode and the episode where the guy is shunned by the world for a year are some of my all time favorites. The 80s reboot was my jam.
