My husband died January 21, 2024 of aspiration pneumonia. He wasn't on hospice but he has had difficulty swallowing ever since he had surgery on his neck back in 2015. It was such a shock. When he went into the hospital on December 30th, I kept thinking he was going to get better but no, after 22 days he died. I am so lost without him. Our 40th anniversary would have been just 3 weeks later.😭 Thank you to everyone. I hope I can see my sweet husband again someday. May God bless each of you.🙏

My mother asked for eggs and ham for breakfast and then wasn’t able to swallow her whole first bite. The next day, she was only able to swallow a couple of tiny pills. By the time for the third pill, she clenched her teeth so I couldn’t give her anymore. From then on, she was on morphine every couple hours and was “asleep” until she passed a few days later. Once they stop eating because swallowing becomes too laborious, it’s close to the end.

My mum a few days before she passed was stopped from drinking. She wasnt swallowing properly. They told us if it goes into her lungs she could drown. So we were given cotton sponges with water to wet her mouth. It was awful to see such an amazing strong woman succumb to that horrid disease cancer. She died 5 months ago 5 weeks after my dad passed from a brain tumour

Thank you, this is so helpful. My mum is at end of life with stage 4 cancer, she also has Parkinson’s. We are at this stage where she is coughing more, especially after drink. It seems it takes hardly any fluids to make her cough, this explains why. Your channel has been so informative to us during this process, thank you so much.

My mother died in 2021 at 91. I was living with her and providing care. Mom was doing relatively well with congestive heart failure and stage 3 kidney disease. Her mental status was good, but she saw an advertisement on TV that triggered a memory and she asked me how a family friend was doing. I was surprised because the friend had been deceased for 66 years! I explained and Mom looked puzzled. A few days later she asked about her sister (my aunt) who had been deceased 14 years. About that time she had a couple of instances of difficulty swallowing. A few days later I was awakened by her very loud talking and she didn't recognize me so I had her hospitalized. This was during COVID and I couldn't visit her. Hospital doctor called to say she had an infection but the doctors couldn't identify the source of the infection. The hospital got the infection under control and recommended a short nursing home stay. In just two days the nursing home's internal medicine doctor called to say he suspected Mom was "micro ingesting" into her lungs causing re-infections... the doctor was correct. She became septic and passed peacefully. Unfortunately, I was unable to visit her in the nursing home. The nursing home physician told me this series of events is fairly common but caregivers often don't know what to look for. This video is very helpful and I wish I had known about it because I would have gotten Mom to her doctor quickly instead of waiting for her next appointment. .

I'm an LPN who's in a more medical environment (skilled nursing) for the first time in my 8-year career, and one of my hospice residents is nearing the end. People (coworkers, other residents concerned about him, etc) had been giving him water, and he both aspirated and started 3rd spacing. I could hear the water moving in his lungs with every breath and could see he was basically drowning. I spent some time looking up the dying process on Google, and you popped up in the search. I spent time watching several of your videos to more accurately gauge where he was at in his dying process, and this also allowed me to switch him over to oral sponges so he wouldn't keep inhaling his water. I was able to educate him and the staff as well, so we wouldn't cause more issues. Thank you so much for your content, Julie! You are a valuable resource!

My dad had Dementia & he got Pneumonia while he was in hospital. I was so confused & angry why this was happening to him. I didn’t have any doctor tell me all the information I know now, that it happens all the time with Dementia patients towards end of life. He slowly wasn’t able to eat or drink, then it progressed to a tube in his nose for his food / vitamin intake.

Because the doctors are no longer worth their oath. I don't trust any of them after looking after both my parents with dementia for 5 years. We need to educate ourselves unfortunately, because we are the advocates and can't afford to rely on these people. ❤

I had a hospice pt with a g-tube. the dr wrote an order for po foods, as tolerated...patient's son wanted mom to have her favorite piece of cake...I warned son it wasn't a good idea, but he got the order from the dr. she ended up with aspiration pneumonia...no antibiotics, as she was 'hospice' (I fought for treatment, as it'd be a comfort measure, or so I thought)...it was not a pleasant death, and so very avoidable.

A friend of mine had this happen after brain surgery. He had Parkinsons, fell which resulted in a brain leak and they drained it. As a Parkinsons patient he should have been placed on his side not back after surgery due to issues with swallowing, VA mistake. He coded, was resuscitated never fully mentally recovered. Had I been there, this would not have happened. He was in and out of ICU, CCU for some time and his mental state declined as he was not watched carefully due to breathing issues. He was drowning in his own fluids as his son (advocate) took forever to arrive at the VA to give permission to drain his lungs from fluid as he was unable to do so himself. Advocate for yourselves if you can, if not make sure the person advocating for you under medical power of attorney is reliable! My friend passed some time later and I held his hand as his son just left him there, couldn't be bothered to show up.

Hi Julie, thank you so much for your videos! My father in law started in home hospice this week. He has aspiration pneumonia and is on a thickened liquid and pureed diet. He wants to eat and drink but refuses the thickened liquids and pureed food, so my mother in law has been giving him soda and regular food. I’m worried this will cause more issues and worsen his suffering. Do you have any advice on how to handle this? Thank you!

Always talk to to HIS hospice team, because they will know his case better. But generally speaking- if he's on hospice- let him do what he wants - it's about comfort- It's a risk vs benefit. 💕

The second bout of aspiration pneumonia took dad. It came about from dysphagia due to dementia. After the first episode they took a barium swallow test and told me it was likely he would aspirate and get pneumonia again. it was so bad they said he should just eat as he liked as he was nearing the end. But when he got back to the memory care unit, they fed him mushy beans and stuff. He was not happy. I'm not sure why there was a disconnect between the hospital doctors who recommended letting him enjoy his last meals - and the memory care in his senior center that gave him the mush.

It may be because he was in a care facility, doctors and nurses follow protocol. If not lawsuits. Doctors and nurses have an oath to do what’s medically necessary to keep you alive. Im Sorry about your dad, my mom went through this ,it was like she was on a baby food diet. It even smelled horrible. She’s been gone 10 years and my father is now showing signs of it.

My mother passed away a bit more than 1 year ago, after a long lasting sickness. She was in the nursing home, and due to a lack of staff she didn't get enough food and water, and I noticed the impact of that. I tried compensating by making meals and soup myself, helping her to eat this. And now I think I did something wrong, and it upsets me or even haunts me. I wished I had known about this much earlier.
