This song was sung for my father's funeral in 2014. As we were walking out following the casket, the choir were just starting the chorus and I felt a lightness in my heart, knowing he was finally with mom in Heaven. Your song gave me that feeling of reassurance that everything was going to be fine. Thank you sooooo much for this song
I hope you are healing with the loss of your mom and dad. I know that it feels good to know that your loved one is in a “place”, however, the Lord said that He would not like us to be ignorant of the state of the dead and I know that in some churches this is taught. it is better to obey God rather than man. The bible makes no mention of people going to heaven when they die. Here are some text to study to show yourself approved unto God: Ecclestes 9:5; John 5: 25; Romans 6::4; 1 Thessalonians 4:6; 1 Corinthian 15:54; there is a host of other text and example; for example when Jesus called lazarus from the grave, he did not call him from heaven, he said lazarus come forth, when Jesus himself was risen he did not come down from heaven, he came forth from the grave. every one that Jesus rose from the dead he called them from the state of what looks like someone sleeping. I pray you receive this not as a means to make you feel worse about your parents, but the Lord desires us all to know the truth as it will set us free. God is loving and would not our loved ones in a place such as heaven while looking at us in this world as we suffer. pray and think about it. May God bless you and keep you.
First time i heard this was singing it at church. I went to the Pastor and asked for the lyric sheet. Just reading the words gives me peace. But when im singing it, I feel like I'm singing in the presence of God and weep.
Brian, thank you for this beautiful song! Even though I Grew up with country music, and it still holds a place deep in my heart: I am a modern worship leader, and find I am partial to the more acousticish/worshipful version that you did, possibly because of the excellent female harmonies in it. Which are both probably the reasons I would love to hear a version of this with Emmylou Harris singing backup-I think The two of you together would sound amazing!
I have known Brian‘s music for about 25 years, but ironically I also discovered this song on a completely different Hope FM, in the United States. Although it was a different version, the one that has the woman singing part of it with Brian.
Thanks Judith for your comment and question. Here's a brief version of the story behind the song. To me, The River is the sound of friendship. In 2003 three of us good friends went on a retreat (Brian Thiessen, Michael Hansen and myself.) At one point, the guitars came out and Brian Thiessen started playing a melody. I heard something special and asked him to repeat it. When he did, I started singing ‘To the river, I am going’ and we were off. There was something in the music that felt ‘old-fashioned’ as it was coming out - we were being influenced by earlier writers of folk songs and hymns. As we sang we pictured people going to a river to be baptized, or just releasing their burdens into the ever-flowing river of God’s love and forgiveness. I was also thinking about the river described in the book of Revelation 22:1 & 2. Regarding your question - I don't think you 'have' to go to the river for forgiveness . . . it's a metaphor about how love and forgiveness is always flowing and always available to anyone who needs it. I hope that helps.
@@BrianDoerksenMusic Thank you very much for taking the time to answer the questions, it's really helpful. It's great to read this story behind the song. I wish you the best and hope you will write many more beautiful songs.
