In July of this year, HODINKEE embarked on a 12-day journey around Great Britain to explore all things British horology - from the current state of watchmaking to the depths of timekeeping history. European Editor Arthur Touchot and Senior Digital Producer/videographer Will Holloway, along with drone specialist Mauro Bellanova, logged over 1,400 miles, heading north from London to the Isle of Man and back, with a handful of stops along the way. This was all made possible in part through the support of Bentley Motors, which generously lent us a Flying Spur W12 for the journey. This is the second episode in a five-part series. Enjoy. Love the pendulum clock. The entire movement is housed in the bob itself. Brilliant

Very cool. I think he's onto something with this "localisation" malarky.

So if somebody else is interested I informed myself: The watches range in price between £5000 - £20,000 and are made in limited edition of between 5-100 pieces. Not all parts are made by Robert Loomes but they are all made in England. If you want to order there is a longer waiting list now.

What, 5-20K pounds for a refurbished plain old movement?! When you could get a few Bremonds with that money? I hope you're only joking.
@alialexanderal-almani4825
@alialexanderal-almani4825 7 лет назад
You're probably right. You could get a vintage Smiths with the same movement in mint condition for £900 and a used or even new Saxonia by A. Lange & Söhne. In addition, I am quite surprised about that price since he was making so much fun about the expensive and flashy wristwatch of his customer. Not sure if his dials, case, and the engravings are so expensive.

I'm afraid so. Who in his/her right mind would spend £7,000-15,000 for a plain watch with a restored lukewarm-antique untested movement when he/she could get, instead, almost any watch from a highly-regarded manufacturer (e.g. Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, Omega) or - at a *significantly* less price - any mid-tier watch? It's a no brainer. These people are looking for victims who would fall for a false "nationalistic" sentiment, a marketing trick; as if Bremont, for instance, is not good enough. This is insulting and offensive to the consumer.

Here in Brazil you gonna need to work for 10 years with a standard salary to get an Oris, Seiko watches is fkng expensive here, it's just ridiculous

👑👑👑Jeez, quality leaves a lot to be desired for i.e. 1080p v 144p. The latter, my drunk mate Dave in the pub who talks a good game comes to mind❗

Compared to RGM, I think these watches are similar in goal and price. There are not many enameled dials these days and his look beautiful.

Haha :D For a micro brand watchmaker that makes most things by hand it is pretty okay, I think. But the main problem are the refurbished Smiths movements from the 1950s. You could get a vintage Smiths with the same movement in mint condition for £900 with the same movement. I only got curious because he brought up this 'for only £500' story from the history of his company. If his watches would have been around 1500 $ I would have certainly considered one. But I think the refurbished slow-beat Smiths movements are really not worth the money. I would rather buy a mint vintage Smiths from the 1950s. In addition, I am also about localization! I live only 40 minutes away from Glashütte, so I would rather save up for a Saxonia by A. Lange & Söhne. They also make their own movments and are proofen perfect & I will make even money down the line.

If anyone is looking for the definition of irony it's this. They started making watches because they could make a watch as capable as a "flashy expensive" watch for under £500 - and there is currently a watch for sale on their website for £68k. Beautiful watches, but sadly with no relation to the founding ideals of their beginings.
