A wonderful sound you rarely hear anymore. When I was a small boy, my Dad took me to Chicago where EMD had an office (Michigan Avenue?) with a cutaway of a 567 diesel. It was motorized so you could see all the parts moving; it was extremely fascinating to me (and to Dad). Amazing I still remember this (more than 70 years ago). This was in the late 1940s when railroads were rapidly retiring steam for diesels.

I've always loved the sound of GM 2-stroke diesels. Whether it's the big EMD's on the rails or the Detroits on the road. I think my favorite is the EMD 16-645-E3. When I was a kid in the 80's these were still pretty common on the main lines. there was a main and a few smaller branch lines close to our house. And late at night it was very common to hear those big engines rumbling about notch-4 with that real low frequency resonation that you could feel in the house. And then you'd hear a few blasts of the horn as they went through the crossings about 1/4 mile away. Would love to get up close to one some day.

I would lie in bed hear them chattering away between Allan’s Creek and Unanderra, the sounds carrying on the still night air. They weren’t too popular on that turn. Great stuff, mate! Terrific sound, and you had the sun over our shoulder, just as it should be. In the US, I think just about all the running 567s are in museums. The closest we get to that sound are the non-turbo 645s, like the GP-38-2s.

Some GP9s are still in operational switching service in some class 3 railroads, so technically not all is lost

Two each of these @ 900 HP in every LST produced for WW2. The one of them that brought back LST 325 to US waters, made the trip from UK with a busted cylinder. Looks and sounds like 71 series Detroit Diesels, cause Charles Kettering worked on both at the same time.

I nominate this for "Best Feature Film", "Best Soundtrack", and "Best Supporting Stack of Horns". Most entertaining, thank you. Now, could you please strap that camera on top of an old Alco RS-3 please. PLEASE.

An eyewitness said you were doing a handstand on top of the lead locomotive whilst filming . . . Is there no end to your talent:)
