I love the Robe. Especially, the final scene. It always fulls my heart up, because of the bravery and faith those early Christians had. They don’t make films like this anymore. It’s a shame.

I was 7 years old when the Nuns took us to go see this movie on a special school trip during Easter. I remember asking the Nuns why we didn't see the face of Jesus. She said because it WAS Jesus. Years later of course, Jesus was portrayed by many actors where we actually saw and heard Him speak. It was the first time I ever saw Richard Burton. This turned out to be his first of 7 Oscar Nominations as Best Actor. To think Elizabeth Taylor was only about 20 at this time. I loved this movie ever since then. I've watched the sequel "Demetrius And The Gladiators" many times. These were beautiful films. No computer graphics back then.

Amen, we just watched The Passion of the Christ which is by far the BEST version I have seen in my life even though Mel Gibson was hated for doing this because of his hatred for the Jews in Hollywood he came through with an EPIC version in my view.I have seen the Robe many times and it affected me deeply when I was about 10 I think but I havent seen the one the next years version you speak of.Bless you~

@Woxineau Crows I just watched "PASSION OF THE CHRIST" again, last night. It is by far the most accurate and visually depicted version around. His ability for you to feel the agony, pain and humiliation was heart wrenching. The Rabbis were so fearful of JESUS and his popularity the only way to stop him and the movement was to be sure JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED. THEY CHOSE TO HAVE JESUS CRUCIFIED OVER BARABBAS. THE ROMANS CARRIED OUT OUT THE EXECUTION , BUT THE JEWS CONDEMNDED JESUS TO DEATH.I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.

As a WOC born in the late 90's I'm the only person in my group of friends who knows who Victor Mature or William Burton were. Thanks to my grandparents I grew up with a deep appreciation for movies like this. Although, to their chagrin not so much my parents. I've often wondered why no one has ever done a remake...tho I'm also kind of grateful that they haven't.

This is the reissue trailer from the early 1960s. What has become of the original 4 x 3 non-anamorphic trailer that had Darryl F. Zanuck standing behind his desk in his office talking about the film and explaining CinemaScope to the audience? I haven't seen that one for decades.

The Robe was The First Ever Movie to be Released in Cinemascope. Wait a Minute, Even Disney Used Cinemascope in Some of their Short Films between the 1950s and the 1960s.
@williamsnyder5616
@williamsnyder5616 Год назад
Yes, but Disney's releases came after "The Robe" was released in September, 1953. Twentieth Century-Fox went to the bother of invitinv all the studio heads to the Fox lot for a demnstration of CinemaScope. Darryl F. Zanuck invited all the studios to use CinemaScope at $25K per picture because Fox had trademarked the process, Every studio from MGM to Columbia agreed to use CinemaScope with the exception of Paramount which was working on its own wide screen process, VistaVision.

Great Richard Burton's performance
@fob1xxl
@fob1xxl 5 месяцев назад
It was his second. Right after "My Cousin Rachel" in 1952. He was nominated 7 times. He should have won for "Whose Afraid of Virginia Wollf" and "The Taming Of The Shrew." His performance in "Cleopatra" was equal, if not better than this film for which he was nominated for Best Actor, but he wasn't even nominated.

This, of course, is not the original trailer, it's a reissue trailer from around 1962-63. The original trailer, which hasn't been seen for decades and isn't up on RU-vid, was not in 'Scope and featured 20th Century-Fox vice president Darryl F. Zanuck stood behind the desk in his office explaining what CinemaScope was.

The first film of faith that started to get Christians into theaters in the 50s. Also, the first film that pretty much forced people to go to the movies after television was created, because viewers couldn't see the whole picture on the small screen. The images were too wide, and moved characters to the edge.
