Remember watching this story as a kid and those eyes scared the wits out of me. Glad you got rid of the silly twang from the knife, far better. Thanks for this wee treat!
thanks! that shot was really tricky because the angle of the "cutout" is misaligned in the original so I had to redo the cutout properly and then put a slightly zoomed in view of the bridge. I also added the extra glow so it was more in keeping with the distance model shots where the bridge window is a glowing yellow strip. The vent shot is similar in that the footage of the vent is not only shaking a little but also at a slightly different angle. I don't even know why they did that since it's not like you see it open or see anyone behind it.
A friend of mine bought one of the original robot heads at an auction back in the mid 1980s. They were very impressive - made of fibreglass and quite heavy. I got to try it on. A strange compulsion came over me...
I'm glad you fixed the eyes for the robots. I love the serial but the strange glowing stick-ons utilised cut a lot of the tension out of their appearance. I've been enjoying your fx edits of the serials, especially the Meglos one, I look forward to seeing more!
I just wished they had the same team that designed those robots working behind the scenes more regularly. It's a shame because only a few seasons after you get monsters like the Nimon who are just terrible. Dr Who could do great designs from time to time but became so well known for their bad designs that it puts a lot of people off the old series.
Excellent stuff - I particularly enjoyed what you did with the Laserson probe. And did you take off the 'Doing!' sound effect when Leela hits the robot with the knife and swap it for something else? Perhaps that's from another story but if it isn't, then kudos, sir, a nicely judged decision and a sharply edited one.
I sure did! That sound annoys me so much, what were they thinking? The tricky part was getting music to match because the soundtrack isn't available (I don't think), so I just looped a bit of the score prior to the knife throw.
I do notice than you kept the revelation of who Taren Capel was with the cut to his distorted face on screen. When I first saw this it kinda ruined who the surprise was ... did you think about competely removing his image on screen?
IMHO The eyes are a little ott and the bleed makes them look superimposed - the laserson effects are very good. Short of actually replacing the model shots there's not much that could be done as the miniature works well in long shots but awful in close ups. If only they'd had the time and money for a second larger and more detailed model of the bridge section.
Yeah, the bleed comes from blurring the keyed out red, which I do to disguise the pixelated artifacts you get from keying a colour that doesn't stand out too well. I imagine other expensive effects software may have better keying tech but I'm just a poor amateur :-) The alternative is adding the glow frame-by-frame, which would take weeks (I had to add a lot of extra bits where the redness just disappears, and that took a few days) or tracking where there's something to lock onto, but most of the scenes are shot quite darkly (quite rightly!) which only compounds the challenge.

There are 3/4 classes of robots. D Class are basic service droids, Dumbs, who only follow basic orders, and are the Black ones. V Class, or Vok, are the Green ones, and are more advanced, capable of speech, and are the most common. SV class, or Super Vok, are the overseers of all lower class robots. D-84 is in a class of his own, wearing a very dark green colour scheme, and having the intelligence of a Super Vok
@@brigadier-tc8565 thanks for the info! always liked the design of those robots, and would have liked to have seen them brought back, although the clockwork robots in the girl in the fireplace episode seemed like a sort of successor to the ones in robots of death.
