In 1996, mega-producers Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer teamed with a young director named Michael Bay to make the slam-bang action flick, The Rock. They assembled an intriguing cast led by Sean Connery, who played a former convict at Alcatraz (aka The Rock) who has to lead a daring unit into the former prison to rescue hostages and prevent the release of deadly nerve gas. The role would echo his most famous role, James Bond, while to play the second lead, they hired a recent Oscar winner, Nicolas Cage, who'd never been the lead in a big action film before. And the rest, as they say, is history. In this episode of Revisited, we look at this stone-cold classic, which even got a big shout-out in Nicolas Cage's most recent movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent!

Just like Die Hard and a few others, The Rock has the distinct accolade of being a movie you can watch and re watch until the end of times.

Welcome to “The Rock”, this is definitely a great mashup of Die Hard meets 007 (with some saying that Connery’s John Mason being what older version of Bond could have been). This is one of Connery’s finest action roles, proving at 65 the dude still has it ( just check out the balcony scene before he makes his escape attempt from the FBI, which is just a lead to the great action that follows). Also as his debut in action movie star, Nicholas Cage made a great transition. Connery and Cage have really great banter which is the main selling point of the movie. “Well my name is - I’m Stanley Godspeed.” “But of course you are.”

General Hummel is one of the best film antagonists ever created. Once he lays out why he’s doing what he’s doing, you understand completely. What makes him even more engaging is in the end, he didn’t have the nerve to execute thousands of civilians. He’s not a power hungry mad man. He’s a soldier who couldn’t stand his fallen comrades sacrifice were never acknowledged in service of their country.

There’s a fan theory that The Rock takes place some time after Sean Connery’s final outing as James Bond, “Diamonds Are Forever,” which, coincidentally, was set in San Francisco. According to the theory, Connery’s Bond was captured during his mission and imprisoned in Alcatraz.

But who in their right mind would turn down the money paramount kept throwing at him to make sequels.. One of my favorite action movies and still to this day, Michael Bay's best film that he directed. There are some annoying characters and stereotypes here and there, but unlike his later films, they are only on screen for a few minutes and we never see them again, so I can tolerate them just fine. And of course, a lot of explosions, but hey its a Bay movie, so its to be expected.

Not saying this is the best work any of them have done, but it is incredible & solid acting. The Rock is a perfect movie. As you said, "cinema at it's finest". My only complaint is that you forgot to mention John C McGinley as one of the bad guys!

I am sorry, but this narrator is really hard to listen to. I love the idea of revisiting older movies, and The Rock is a great movie, but the way it is presented is like one of those spam RU-vid channels that does nothing but “top 10 something”. His voice is horse and overly dramatic… I could not get through it, sorry.

this move has its moments, in which it kinda feels dragged out in my opinion or at least the action falls a bit short in some scenes, but other than that its a very entertaining action movie! cast is just perfect! everybody is giving their best and you can feel it! almost every scenes is beautifully shot, the soundtrack is most likely one of the best ones ever made, and the main- and side-stories are mostly really well paced! if i had to rate it, i guess i'd give it 7.5 out of 10 prom-queens.

I was supposed to see this at the theater with a group of friends, but I skipped out. My friends went and took acid. One of my friends flipped out during the movie and when the cops arrived, he fought the cops and got sent to juvi for a while.

Best Michael Bay movie. A close second is Armageddon.

The narrator of this vid sounds like the love child of Epic Voice Guy and Daffy Duck

"Carla was the prom queen." I fucking love this film, will never get tired of it. Still awaiting a new Criterion blu-ray of the film, they already did a Laserdisc and DVD of the film. (Latter which I proudly own)
