RONIN is the Best Robert De Niro Movie You Never Saw

Robert De Niro just turned 80, and what better way to celebrate the "summer of De Niro" than by revisiting one of his best - mostly unknown - movies? Ronin! John Frankenheimer’s career seemed to reach its nadir when he directed the ill-conceived remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Still, someone in Hollywood must have been impressed by how he held that tortured project together, as two years later, he would release 1998’s Ronin, boasting an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Sean Bean and Jean Reno. This action flick about a group of disavowed spies working as mercenaries wound up being a masterclass in action filmmaking from the director who helped invent the genre with The Train, Black Sunday, Grand Prix, and so many more.
While a modest box office hit, Ronin has become something of a classic, famed for its spectacular car chases through the streets of Paris. It’s a rare foray into pure action for De Niro, who’s never been cooler than he is here, and a last hurrah for the great Frankenheimer. It’s this week’s Best Movie You Never Saw - and make sure to let us know in the comments what you think of this masterful piece of action cinema.

Ronin stands out because it's something that a lot of action films don't even try or want to be, and that's realistic. The characters are completely relatable and not flashy and/or over-the-top in any way. Their everyday-ness is much more identifiable and believable than the people you see in most action movies. No one looks like models or has overly theatric dialogue, they all look and act like people you would pass by in the street and not give a second thought to (which makes perfect sense considering what their profession entails). They have names like Sam, Deirdre and Larry, not traditional action movie names like Xander Cage, Mason Storm or the Bond girl double-entredre (again, if you're trying to be secretive, why would you go by a name that purposefully stands out?). It eschews high-tech gadgetry in favor of cups of coffee. Ronin even addresses things that are glossed over so often, you don't even notice that they were missing from a lot of movies until they were brought up in Ronin. A perfect example is when the team is brought together for the first time and brought to the hide-out. Sandwiches and fruit are provided, they all get some sleep and Sam needing new clothes is addressed. These are all real-world necessities that are rarely addressed in most action movies, but they're all part of Ronin. The action sequences are also shockingly realistic. If you have shoot-outs and car chases in the streets, innocent bystanders will inevitably be injured and/or killed and while Ronin doesn't relish in that aspect, it doesn't shy away from it either. So while Ronin does provide the slam-bang spectacle that's needed for an action movie, it presents it in a realistic fashion that engages the audience in a way the genre rarely even attempts.

I love this film. It's faultless. What I like most (and also what I miss most) is the realness of the action scenes. There's no CGI, no frenetic quick cuts, it uses wide lenses, the viewer can fully see and appreciate the action on the screen, nothing is obscured, nothing is fake. It's something we don't see anymore and I lament its absence in cinema today.

I developed a love for movies made in the late 90's and early 00's. The environment, the clothes, the technology. It brings me a feeling of nostalgia. I was born in 1990. I watched Ronin as a kid, right when it hit movie stores. I remember that the last scene impressed me a lot. With Rober De Niro's character leaving on one side and Jean Reno on the other, after saying goodbye. The thought "They never saw each other again", came to mind, as if it had been spoken in the movie. It impacted me because there were 2 guys who got very close to each other, as much as their way of life would allow, and they would never see each other again. This movie is good because the characters are good. You believe they know what they're doing, without being forced. This is shown naturally throughout the film. They are not invincible, sometimes one of them escapes death, because there are so many people involved, that some get in the way of others. I keep watching this movie from time to time. Calms me down and entertains me. I've been saving it on my PC, along with other movies that have the same effect on me.

@@killbot_factory Skarsgard´s character is supposed to be a former STASI operative (the secret police/intelligence agency of Eastern Germany). These guys were feared not only by the ordinary citizens of E.Germany but also by the western intelligence community, because they were absolutely ruthless, highly trained and could blend in. They were like the Eastern German equivalent of the KGB and specialized in interrogation/torture, surveilance & psy ops. Casting Skarsgard for this role was absolutely perfect.

I remember watching this with my parents years ago. My mother disliked it because of “What's in the case?” She was more of an action fan, wanting more gunfights, explosions and one-liners. (She was a huge fan of the 80's action/horror genre) My father and I still still enjoyed it. It was more of a thinking-kind of action movie. You had to pay some attention, had to be observant. I loved how De Niro's character twice outed team-mates using coffee cups. Jo referenced the second incident, but I think the first stood out just a bit more.

However, we were all a little disappointed that Sean Bean’s character was a burnout, since we liked him so much in Patriot Games and Goldeneye. Glad to see Ronin getting some love. An excellent action flick. I always thought one of the interesting ways the tension was raised was by having each car chase sequence be more intense than the previous one, until finally, you have the chase of all chases. The scene in which Sam guides Vincent in surgically removing the slug from his gut is a masterclass in cinematography. Aside from the McGuffin of "The Case" there's another-- the man in the wheelchair. Whomever he is, he's mentioned a handful of times but it's never resolved who he is, or how he figures in the assembly of the team. Another interesting angle is, two of the characters, Sam and Vincent, actually discuss one of the glaring plot holes. When they return to Paris from Nice, they're sitting in a bar talking about how Gregor could have a dupe of the case in his possession, where it came from and so on. It's a glaring plot hole which is papered over by the characters discussing it and eventually coming to a "who the hell knows?" kind of conclusion. It's a shame there was no sequel ...

Not very usual in action cinema, but sometimes happen that miracle. A veteran like John Frankenheimer knows how to shoot and drag you into his film just with the tension, the suspense, the evolution of the cast during the events and the action, with some of the best car chases ever shot, without digital effects or shaky cameras, something the new Hollywood action filmmakers should watch and learn.

The SAS trained the actors on gun handling … wow. I’m betting those guys knew what color the boat house is at Hereford.

I'd compare it to "Heat" - and between the two, I'd watch "Ronin" again, even as much as I love "Heat". Another similar underated movie it reminds me of is "To Live and Die in LA."

Love the car chase scene in this as a kid loved it Robert de Niro gets a bullet pulled out of him and asked "if you don't mind I'm going to pass out now" lol

I can't believe it...I saw this movie. It was great. A kind of cool European genre. Jean Reno is greater than great. All top notch, but what a great frenetic pace.

I don't remember if it was in a doco or a feature on the DVD, but one of the things that stood out to me about the chase scenes. The drivers were given the direction that he didn't want to see brake lights.

I remember when this came out and I missed it repeatedly until last winter...and it is one of those films that belongs to a subgenre of those European action movies with cool black sedans...like the original The Transporter. This film seemed long to me like a six hour film...in a good way like the original mission impossible. Man, I miss when BMW made cool black sedans with manual transmissions. Shame what happened to the 5 and 7 series.

I remember watching this film in the theaters back then. Loved the film still do just re watched it already. This is a great film loved it and this film is what is missed in today's movies. It was not just action packed there is a lot of blood and violence. There is a lot of by standers getting killed and the scene where De Niro's character of Sam giving instructions on the surgery is bloody and looks realistic enough no CGI fakery. Of course the car chase is the best thing in the film. Wished more people appreciated this film.

This film's greatest strength lies in Mamet's screenplay. The characters are mercenaries comprising of assassins and ex-spies, so the dialogue is aptly "shadowy"; expository information is scarce and often delivered cryptically. We don't even know what's in the case.

52 Pick Up with Roy Scheider & John Glover is a down & dirty little masterpiece that John Frankenhiemer fans usually forget about. It was also the best movie Cannon films ever made. Ronin, on the other hand, is a decent little action flick, that falls somewhere between Black Sunday and Dead Bang.

I remember seeing this movie over a decade ago one night on TV. The title card and prologue about the origins of the Ronin made me assume it was set in medieval Japan. Boy was I in for a shock when it suddenly turned into a modern heist movie. Still were it not for Robert De Niro I would have given it a pass.

Always loved this movie, and I think people got angry because they just didn’t care much for the ending…which I think is pretty fantastic. It was just a really authentic looking film and the one green screen scene they actually had was off putting. Plus Katarina Witt was ravishing as usual (a major crush for many a men in my time). And on a final note, Frankenheimer only directed Dr. Moreau because he was guaranteed three more films by the studio, this one included.
