The Rock of St. Peter

Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus told St. Peter he was the rock on whom he was going to build His Church. What??? I'm a Rock???... You are going to build a Church on me??? What a startling...What an unusual statement. What could Jesus have possibly meant by it?
Chris Stefanick takes us inside the meaning of the famed words: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church (Matthew 16:18)."
Chris unpacks this powerful apologetic by explaining why every mission needs a leader and an organized effort to be accomplished. The Lord was merely setting up his "organization," his "company" to accomplish His mission in the world, through the Catholic Church. This is what Our Lord intended when he spoke such an astonishing statement to Peter, the Rock. Sure men are weak, but when they are anointed with Divine Authority to Teach and Preach in His name, His Divine Power augments all of our weaknesses!
Jesus founded the Catholic Church to be "His company" on earth. A company that would accomplish His mission in the world: to teach and preach in His name --and to bring His presence to all men. See why the world and the Church need a Pope.

It did not NEED a CEO, but Christ chose one anyway. Why? Because a visible, tangible, and authoritative earthly head was the way to bring that Church to the world. Period. Read Isaiah 22 and see where Jesus was coming from. When Jesus gives Peter--and peter alone--the keys, he was bestowing a prime minister authority on him. In those days, when the King was away (as Jesus would be once ascended), the one the King gave the keys to was charged with running his affairs, presiding over the other ministers (other apostles), and making decisions in place of the King. That, my friend, is what the papacy is. The succession is documented and was put in place so Christ's church might endure in the world, which it did and has beyond ANY human concept. The Pope is not divine, he is not a god, and he is not sinless. He is a man--like Peter--who was broken, common, and flawed. But also like Peter, he was CHOSEN and was given the divine guarantee by Christ that the gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church he was charged to lead. I believe Christ, for my faith is in Him alone. But having a worldwide, visible, earthly head does not detract from Christ, it glorifies Him as it has stood the slings and arrows of jealous, angry, self aggrandizing men within the Church and without. Without a pope, this could not occur, plain and simple. It is scriptural, historical, and logical that the papacy survives and thrives in spite of, not because of any human doing.

the catechism of the catholic church says in paragraph 95 "It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others." the question then isnt why we have 'old men' telling us how to pray, it is why "they" dont have apostolic teaching authority and sacred Tradition.

CCC 881 The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. "The office of binding and loosing which was given to Peter was also assigned to the college of apostles united to its head." This pastoral office of Peter and the other apostles belongs to the Church's very foundation and is continued by the bishops under the primacy of the Pope.

Someone came to me with a misconception of the church today.....that we have "old men controlling how we pray and worship." Now obviously this is not true. I didn't know how to respond to him, though. I brought up that these men were handed down authority by the apostles. But he kind of closed up. How would you react in that situation?

If Peter is the rock the church is built on how is it built on him? What in scripture shows Peter as the rock?

Pap 2-3 the fact that the man’s name was Simon and Jesus changes it and calls him Cephas which is Aramaic for Rock. Throughout Scripture God changed a person’s name when giving them a role such as Abram to Abraham and Saraí to Sarah.

The personal earthly name of Peter was Simon and the name given to him by Jesus is Peter which will signify as the Rock. Now what does this mean in Matthew 16:18 ? Jesus has given this name to Simon because he will represent everybody, to all believer that they too will also be the Rock which will make up the building structure by which the church will be built. The first verse of Matthew 16 states the question "Who do you say that I am?" and this question was not only meant for Peter but to all the Apostles, Simon then answered, "Thou art the Messiah, The Son of the living God." This is the Rock, the very foundation of Jesus church. And the person who have confessed this belief is the rock that would be placed and be seated in the very foundation which is also called a rock. So Simon becomes a rock once he confessed the belief, then would be placed in the foundation which is Jesus Christ. So Simon is just a mere representation of all believer in Christ which will make up the church which he will establish on earth. And the promised of the keys to heaven are all being given to all the believer in Christ, This is the reason everybody is Jesus disciples who can spread the gospel of Christ, baptized in his name and received repentance of sin and be allowed to be seated as a rock in the church of Christ. Matthew 16:18 is not proclaiming Jesus institution of hierarchy but the preaching of the gospel and when they accepted the belief will then become a rock like Peter which would also be placed in the Church of Christ.

Jesus (God) changed Simon's name to Peter. Peter means rock. Whenever God changes someone's name in the Old Testament, He gives them a new mission, and usually one of authority (i.e., Abram to Abraham). There's always some meaning to their new name that relates to their mission (Peter meaning rock). If God meant what you say, He could have at least made Himself a little clearer. Did He not foresee that His words would lead to the founding of a Church that would be around for the next 2,000 years built on the rock of Peter: the papacy?

+Woody Ridenour (YOU SAID) If God meant what you say, He could have at least made Himself a little clearer. Did He not foresee that His words would lead to the founding of a Church that would be around for the next 2,000 years built on the rock of Peter: the papacy? (ME) I am Sorry but he did, All the early Father have understood, what Jesus have meant including all the Apostles. If what was said was what the Roman Bishop understood it to be, Then all the Apostles have made Peter the first Bishop on the First church of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. But they did not, does that mean that they were disobeying Jesus Christ? the answer is NO because Peter was not meant to be the leader but was only represented by Jesus as the first believer in the church of Christ and to whosoever held believed in the very foundation which is Jesus Christ as the Messiah, The Son of the living God he will become a ROCK like Peter that will also be placed to Jesus Christ Church. So all Apostles and all the believers are all ROCK that will make up the church. and Jesus Christ was the very foundation and not Peter. The one that the Hell of Gates will not prevail. The First claimed of the head of all Bishop was claimed by John IV of Constantinople in 595AD, But John never really want it but it was because the Emperor of Rome who wants him to be one. St. Gregory the Great protested about this, He was the Bishop of Rome but he disagree with the proclamation not because of he wanted to be the Pope but he believed that anyone proclaiming himself to be the head of all Bishops is a pre cursor to the coming Anti-Christ. They all held the belief of equality of all Bishops, John IV died after claiming himself to be the Pope, After him is Boniface III a Bishop of Rome and he also died after making such a proclamation. There were many instances that a permission of Rome to the Council to creating the head of all Bishop was denied in all Council but in the 8th century When Leo III crowned Charlemagne, The Church become a State Church with a Military under the banner of Charlemagne and by the sword he forced all Bishops to pay respect to Rome being the head of all Bishops and the Pope was now been proclaimed not by God but by Rome.

The keys was given to Peter and Jesus said I will build my church and said whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. That's authority as leader of the church. It started 2000 years ago not by Luther in 500 years.
@MrLouiegrefalda

+Logical Truth If that is truly the case, That Peter is the only one who has the Keys to Heaven, Jesus should have said " Peter Go and preached the Gospel to all Nation and baptized them since it is only you who has the Key to heaven, and the rest of the Apostles go Home you have no key to bind anyone here on earth. But that is not what Jesus said, He said ALL of you Go and baptized all man and all Nation, Therefore everyone has the Key to bind any one here on earth as long as you belong to Jesus Church. Jesus has compared the Church to a structure which has a foundation and Rocks or bricks which would be placed in the foundation, Can you build any structure with Just one Rock? The chosen Rock that will be placed in the foundation should have the faith and should confess his belief just as Peter did, You are the Messiah, The Son of the living God If you have this faith in you, Just as Peter, you will become a rock that will also be place in the very foundation, Thus the collection of believer that will become the Church of Christ. will formed the very church. Its not about Authority but it is about the faith that would build up the church.

+Wisdom Peter is the only one who has the keys and the others can go out and preach as well. The person who has the keys is the leader. Jesus said to Peter whatever you bind on earth is bound on heaven whatever you loose on earth will be loosed on earth. Jesus declared him leader of the church at that point. Jesus didn't say this to the other apostles. Jesus said only to the others go and preach and forgive sins and Peter is the leader because he has the keys and authority. Authority because as JESUS said I repeat again whatever Peter binds on earth will be bound in heaven whatever Peter loose in earth will be loosed in heaven. It's very clear as daylight. Even a third grader can understand that.

"The Catholic religion foolishly teaches that Peter was never married" That is false. Peter was obviously married. Jesus is King of the Davidic Kingdom of Heaven (aka His Church). He gave Peter the "keys to the Kingdom" (Matt16:19), which signify plenary authority (be a vicar) to lead/teach/discipline, even be a "father" to the inhabitants of the kingdom (the Church) (Isaiah22:20ff). Hence,Peter was the first pope (the word is rooted in the greek word for father). His successor guides us today.

The Catholic religion foolishly teaches that Peter was never married, and that he was the first Pope. In the first place, Peter is NOT the head of the church, and never was. Jesus Christ is the "Rock" (Greek, "Petra") upon which the New Testament church is build. This is made abundantly clear by Peter himself, Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 1 Peter 2:7 (KJV)
