The Rockford Files Gag Reel

This is a tribute to the cast and crew of the "Rockford Files" TV series. During the last and final season 6 (1979 - 1980) we had a wrap party, and this is the video I edited to share at the party. Being a film/video editor, it was a pleasure to be part of the crew in those fun days working directly for Jim Garner, a true talent and nice guy. If you didn't know the next shot to cut to, you could always cut to him for a great reaction, always pure gold! The voice overs in the sound track were that of producer/writers Steve Cannell, David Chase, Juanita Bartlett, and Chas. Floyd Johnson. I was the voice that took the wrath of Jack Klugman when he found the narration had already been done by Dennis Weaver (gag).

Like the people who called into Frasier's radio program on that show the voices in the answering machine at the beginning of each Rockford Files episode were almost always celebrities, the few times they weren't it'd be someone from the production crew but it was typically other famous actors they'd get to read the lines, unfortunately unlike Frasier they were never credited and a list wasn't kept for posterity.

Thanks for posting this. I just recently started re-watching The Rockford Files on a streaming service, and I had forgotten how comedic the shows are. I also love the shots of LA back in the 70s. I mostly visited LA myself in the 80s but most of the views did not change. I liked how his character wasn't the "super tough guy" type you see so much of, he could fight though, and would sometimes win but also sometimes lose. Made it more realistic. Again, thanks for posting!

Boy I loved that show and everyone on it. I even made an outgoing answering machine message like his. The little touches were so important, like how each major character called Jim a different name. His dad called him "son," Angel called him "Jimmy," and Gandy called him "RockFish." Impressive how hard they all worked, and so many older, fading stars getting parts. Touching see in this a VERY old Paul Stewart as a guest star. I'm gonna try and find that episode. He was so great in so many films noir, which "Rockford" was a hat-tip to. Check him out in "KIss Me Deadly," for one. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you so much for posting this, I'm one of Jim's biggest fans. In Jim's book, he said, early in his career while shooting a movie with Brando, he didnt know if he was cut out for acting, remembering his lines, he told Marlin one night. Brando then taught Jim a trick to remember his lines word for word. So Jim never improvised, what he said is what was written for him. Now both Jim and Marlin are gone, and we'll never know what that secret was.

Ivan Dixon directed nine episodes of "Rockford", so it's likely that you're right about this being his voice. He only directed one of the episodes that I edited ("Kill the messenger"), and this clip isn't from that, so it had to come from one of the other eight. Great gag reel .. Love L A back in the 70s , smog and all .. Great touch with Jack Klugman at the end .. Wish I could find Gigi Garner in his stuff .. Tough to find her in anything though she was in quite a lot of his shows and movies .. Anyway this is definitely a keeper ..

I had to say, "Happiness is a discharged gun" on a voice over. I tried like 30 times and it ended up, "Happiness is a discard gun". We gave up and it was a stupid line anyway.

Writing on TRF was just the best. Some story plots were easy and some were more sophisticated and face paced. Just a well done, one of a kind show.

And all the voices on the answering machine gags at the beginning of each episode were celebrities of that era, unfortunately unlike Frasier where they did the same thing with the people who called into his radio show the celebrity answering machine voices weren't credited and no one thought to keep a list back then for posterity so the identities of some of them have spun off into the universe.

LOL. Weaver refers to him as "this Gardner fella." As the years go by, I'm finding people reply to any reference I make to this show with, "what's the rockford files?" or "Who's James Garner?" Sigh.

For some reason, I got this post in my personal email, but it wasn't posted in the comments for this RU-vid, so I'm doing it: Ron Hinton I watched the 1st episode in August 1974 when I came home as a 100% disabled veteran. Between Rockford and Big Valley reruns I learned to think, walk and react again. Thanks for that.

Snapshot in time. Another place and time. At the time the show ran I was 10-15 did not really get a lot of what was really going on. Now watching old re-runs I have a soft spot for Jimbo and his crew.

Fun and sad to watch at the same time. I would guess that a Gag Reel was done after each season? Got any good stories from your work on Combat?
@rodericstephens
@rodericstephens 3 года назад
I think we were so busy each season until the final end, that this is a collection of clips from a couple of seasons. So, no we didn't have gag reels each season. As far as Combat, we were so down to business that I don't remember much except how Vic Morrow was so good in his abilities as an actor. If he had to come on the looping stage to re-record his lines, he'd always get them in one take!

Yep, in the cutting room is where we made it all one from the bits and pieces that they shot from the "roadmap" of the shooting script. Even in this digital era, the techniques are the same that have been used as in the first edited silent films.

@@rodericstephens There is a channel on RU-vid called OldCarMemories who has a piece on someone who caught up with you guys filming the Rattler's episode that you show quite a few clips of.He snapped a photo of Jim and Laurie Jefferson in a Firebird with camera equipment up on the hood while Jim was parked in a gas station getting ready to go back out on PCH to film.The car had a different license plate than the usual 853 -OKG so I am guessing it was the stunt car not the hero car. Any memories of it?The guy supposedly snapped a photo of the front of the car while Jim and Laurie were in it.Supposedly Jim gunned the engine and swerved around the guy at the last minute.Doesn't sound like something Jim would do as everything I have ever heard was he was gracious to his fan's at all times .
@rodericstephens

Thanks for your very interesting comment. The RU-vid video you mentioned is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VewlY1Dqk20.html "Ted's Adventure: The Rockford Files Filming in Malibu" Stephen Cannell, one of the main writers on the show (later to form his own company) tried to get Jim to stop doing his own stunt driving, but then Steve realized that nobody was good enough at driving the way Jim was; everybody considered Jim Garner to be one of the best stunt drivers in Hollywood. So, Jim continued doing his own stunts with a special Firebird. As far as Ted was concerned, he shouldn't have been allowed by the crew to be in front of the car and that close. Garner being owner and head of Cherokee Productions was very aware of the costs of filming, so if they were beginning a take, he would be antsy to get rolling, and with his skill, Ted would have been in no danger, but he shouldn't have been there in the first place. One additional note: As you can see in the gag reel, Jim was so tired that he was flubbing his lines as was the lady, so I know he was near to ending the series and he was showing it in frustration.

@@rodericstephens Thanks Rod for the reply. Filming on location seems like it would be doubly hard.Trying to do the job and trying to deal with fans also.I had saw Ted's Adventure video a while ago and it just hit me this morning when it showed up in my recommended list that it was the same episode that you had a few clips of in the gag reel.There is also a video with Rob Howe on here also.I am sure you are familiar with him too. Wish you good health and happiness in the New Year and thanks again for sharing your Gag reel with the world.

@@emeyer6963 My only caveat in editing the show was that particular episode, since it was very dark having been written by Steve Cannell who usually had a light touch. It lacked any of the normal underlying Rockford humor. It was well written, but as you can see in the gag reel how Jim was laboring, it hurt me to show him getting badly beaten up and the rest of the unpleasantness; not fun. He was my hero both on and off screen.

Fellow actor Dennis Weaver is doing the narrating...... 1924 - 2006. He was a busy actor Known best for his role as the gimpy deputy Chester opposite James Arness in Gunsmoke. He also had 7 successful seasons as a modern day but offbeat police officer in the McCloud series....
