Technical animators are your best friends in a production, makes sure you treat them well cause they can save your rig/animations. Good video to clarify the job for any tech savy animators how wants to develop that skill. It's always a good idea to know a little bit about rigging/ how the engine work to be able to communicate effectively with them. Glad to see you back spreading knowledge :D

I've noticed that I've had a knack for rigging and scripting, but I never really knew what kind of role I'd fulfil. It's nice to know there's niche for this skillset!

Feelin it, so smashed. Nice video. Not an animator but always like to see what other people do. Funny what you can learn from others and apply what you do.

Now I understand better what the difference is. I started studying some Unreal, and I was confused about these positions. I like being a gameplay animator but I understand that knowing a little about the technical animator's work is important.

That’s exactly it Henri. The more you know the better and more clued you’ll be to what’s needed to make the game better. It will inform how you create your animations and the technical department will love you. ;)

They sound like lifesavers! Harvey, I have a question. Most uni students in the UK will be starting their personal projects in the next couple of weeks, what would you say is a good project to do for gameplay animation? The project is 12 weeks long. Thanks again. :)

I agree that learning at less the fundamentals of rigging for animation is a plus. Then when or if you have issues and want to make a rig feature request. The request should be a bit easier to explain and you'll be a bit more valuable w some technical skills. Also having a great technical animator on any team is a HYGE plus. Look at how Gnomon video on RU-vid. Amazing stuff Darrel C

Yeah agree with having the basics man. Much easier to get to the bottom of the feature you’d like to achieve.

After hearing all of it, this animators need a great applause; the amount of work put in every animation, to later waste them if you cannot implement it on the game... would be insane.

Is it possible to bounce between both gameplay animation and tech animation?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 2 года назад
Hey Jimmy...yeah you can, but mostly in smaller studios where you have to multitask a bit more, in bigger studios the role would be split between two people. Thanks for watching

Learning the basics of Animation, Modeling and Rigging would be a great place to start so you can start visualizing the Machines Functions in Maya.

Hey Harvey! Sweet vid as always. Curious on your opinion: When I look at a lot of gameplay animator job listings (even at some AAA studios), it often sounds like they expect you to have hands on experience with state machines etc and setting up these systems in editor. To me it makes sense that gameplay animators might setup basic state logic or make basic edits to states at the very least, but I'd imagine the bulk of this work and maintenance would usually be done by deedicated tech animators. Has this been true in your experience?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 3 года назад
Hey Kaz...thanks. And for the most part yes. However there's studios that believe that all animators can be tech anims so for those studios all animators do all the implementation + animation.

I am not creative. would I still be able to get a job in the field after a 2 year diploma course and be able to grow?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman Год назад
Hello and yeah you could, but you definitely need to work on your creativity if you want to be an animator. But if you goal is to be a Technical Animator which is less on the creative side and more on practical you can certainly get there. Also is a job in high demand as there's very few of them.
