Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Bobby Keys, Jimmy Miller, Nanette Newman, Jim Price, and Ian Stewart
Lyrics:
I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride
She had to heave me right across shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind
It's the honky tonk women
That gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
I laid a divorcée in New York City
I had to put up some kind of a fight
The lady then she covered me with roses
She blew my nose and then she blew my mind
It's the honky tonk women
That gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
It's the honky tonk women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
It's the honky tonk women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
“Honky Tonk Women (Official Lyric Video)”

One of my best memories of this song came as a kid in my very early teens in the later 80s taking a family trip from Tampa to Dahlonega, GA in a 1981 Econoline E150 with a 3-on-the-tree and a 300-6 that had been made into a conversion-style van before there were companies that made them. A radio station along the way apparently were getting ready to change formats. I didn’t know it at the time, only later when I found out that this was a thing that radio stations do when this is about to happen for publicity. I later learned that they call this stunting in the radio biz but basically one of the areas we went through on the way to Dahlonega, GA played this song over and over and over and my whole family and I loved it. This ended up being one of our favorite memories of the trip.

Only Charlie could come up with the most iconic intro ever. It sounds so simple and sparse, it’s anything but. It’s perfection and it’s identifiable half a second into the song. Something else I’ve always loved about this track is how the drums are so high in the mix for the intro and then they drop down when the lyrics come in. Thank you Mr. Watts. Your playing was understated, your impact was giant.

As an engineer, I like unusual mixes. This has the cowbell in the right channel and the rest of the drums almost entirely in the left channel. A lot of this era Stones songs were recorded with guitars etc hard panned ( completely in one channel only). To me this added to the soundstage, but could have been done for the lack of tracks, as many early English recordings were done on everything from 4-8-12 tracks, and were limited by this. In these cases it helps create that wide soundscape. Another is Brown Sugar, and a great example is the Faces great tune “Stay With Me”, the guitars are all hard panned. Not only does this create a better soundstage, but also leaves much of the center clean and that’s where the vocal lies. I’ve been listening to many new so called “great “ productions, and almost everything I’ve heard that’s released today sounds almost mono, with everything slightly panned, and everything ends up a mess centered up, compressed, and 90% of this type of production sucks to my ears. Anyway, just put on any of these songs and a hit from today and see what you think is stereo or mono.
@jlloyd2004mcs
@jlloyd2004mcs Год назад
@@thesonnytackettshow7949 I’ve always loved Stay With Me. I’ll put it through some ‘phones soon. You’re right though; so much music has been compressed so much that it really does sound nearly mono. Some of the older tunes don’t sound like their old recordings after being converted to digital.

This is a fine example of great lyric writing. The song is raunchy, gritty, atmospheric and funny with hints of sadness and joy. With just a few words, it paints a familiar picture of heartbroken man, recklessly navigating a tough breakup. Having been divorced twice, I can say that this song perfectly captures that difficult post breakup period that many younger women and men have gone through. You're sad and heartbroken, but your mind and your friends are telling you to get back out there, live it up, meet a few people and have some carefree good times. Your heart is not entirely into it, but you go through the motions anyway. It's a whole lot of fun, but it's also kind of sad, because it's not really taking away your blues. You meet some great people along the way and they try very hard to pull you out of your own head and get you back on your own feet again. Years later, you'll look back and see what a great time you actually had and how you missed a few opportunities to land a good mate, but you just weren't ready yet. Yeah, I got all of that out of a few verses and choruses. Ha ha!

Same here, except I was twelve and it was 1969! I bought the album myself, which would have represented at least a month of earnings from my after-school paper route. Who ARE these ugly guys, I thought. But my god what great music to be introduced to at that age. And to top it off, I saw them play later that year. My very first concert (thanks Dad!)

This song is The Stones maybe more than any other. The beginning is Blues, and the refrain is Country. NO one could do this but them. For whatever reason, this is one of the very few songs that they could never equal live, imo. There's just a magic about the studio version, and it NEVER gets old.

At the same time, he's got them on a short, tight leash. Stuart Copeland summed it up well: you can analyze Charlie's technique, but, "go ahead, just you try it. You WON'T sound like Charlie." So glad Steve isn't trying to copy his old friend. Steve sounds and feels different, but it's a good fit.

Charlie, I've been following you and the Stones since 1963 and you were the most modest and underrated musician for decades, but your work, loyalty to the band and being a true English gentleman is what I admire about you beside your family life with your wife and daughter. This is my favorite Stones record. I bought the 45 in 1969. The stereo versions are good, but the 45 really packs a punch because of Charlie Watts' drum beats. Whether stereo or mono, this song still gives me goose bumps after more than 50 years, especially after the break where they bring it in for a slam-bang finish. Amazing!

Honkey Tonk Women was the number one single in Australia when I was born; very proud to have this as my "birth song." Rummaging around a record store this arvo and found a 45 of Honky Tonk; made in Australia too from back in the day. Proceeded to crank it up when I got home. Despite it's age the vinyl sounded sweet.
