Great video. I got caught partly in a trance watching this video and far away in nostalgic memories of my high school days. Always the formative years make us what we become. I've loved the Rolling Stones ever since the days when they were banned on some radio stations in the Toronto area. And in those early years I was young enough but not too young to gain the advantage for my later development. In July turning 75, I need these memories for my happy reminiscences.

Hi Melinda - WOW thats excellent. I am mainly a CD guy but do collect vinyl occasionally. I was 16 yrs old in the mid 60's lolol in the UK with all that amazing music to listen to. Unfortunately I was still at school and then doing my apprenticeship so didnt have much money to go out and but a lot of music. My first single I bought with my own money was Wild Thing by the Troggs and then I bought my first album Trogglodynamite. We use to listen to the legendary John Peel show on Saturday afternoons and record the songs on my cassette player. I remember John having Jimi Hendrix on his show when Chas brought Jimi to the UK for the first time and put the Experience together - heady heady days. I feel so privileged, lucky to have been part of that scene. Music meant such a lot to us in those days, and still does for me - sadly today, kids dont have that same connection with the music. Must stop rambling. Take care. Cheers Doug

You were around in an amazing time for music. Thankfully these classics have never left. All these years later we can still buy the singles. ♥️ I'm not sure the music of today will have the staying power The Rolling Stones have had. Thank you for sharing your memories. Take care. ♥️🤗

My brother I had the single "Satisfaction". On the flip side was "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man" which was about a real person. After that came one of my favorite Stones songs "Get Off My Cloud". High school years.

Yes, I grew up with them and every time a new single hit the stores it was major celebration, then run home to listen to it and then in the garage to learn it and play with my band. Fun times and then I had to grow up, go to school, get a degree and work my butt off. I was always a "Stones guy" and not much of a Beatles' and that is true up to these days.

I grew up with a very musical family who were young and hip - imagine having 5 teenage aunts that brought their records over for me to hear - Mom loved The Beatles, The Stones, The Zombies and The Hollies - Dad loved The Yardbirds and The Animals - It was a great time and any of those singles (now in my brothers jukebox) will bring back memories - I have "The London Years" (Mono) on MP3 and it sounds fantastic - Kudos to you Melinda❤ for a fascinating descriptive presentation that will thrill the new Stones fans and us older fans - See you next week!

Never considered myself a Stones fan until i realised that nearly all the important points of my teenage life were soundtracked by Mick n Keef and not just their then current single but old cuts too, including Rainbow, were backgrounding my activities. This carried on until Under Cover of the Night when i managed to shake them off and they haven't bothered me since! Great review Melinda! 😊

I echo your sentiments once again. I'm a big advocate of perspective. Looking back at things and jedging where there were then. I just missed out on New Beatles records as I was born in 1967. But I still grew up with their stuff, and I always bang on to others about the fact that groups like the Beatles had a massive rate of records. Inly on the go for about 8 years, and look at what they did in that period. Likewise the Stones in that period and others. I also love to point out that in the 1970s we had a time when music grew at an unprecedented rate. I'm so glad I grew up in that period. Through my older brothers, as a 3 year old I quickly got into music, and played records, so it started out here in Britain with rock and glam rock, morphed into pub rock and we also got disco as well as various other things like prog rock. Then punk happened. And new wave, and then later SKA, and also the explosion of electronic synth bands too. All that in 10 years. You just couldn't fathom that now.

I am only commenting back, because you read my mind, that brought back memories. Your comment to me was like you read my mind!. You said, you have a lot of memories connected to The Rolling Stones and the juke box. It's wonderful how music can take us back to those special times. Listening to the Rolling Stones on the jukebox, with all the spectators on the sidelines, almost 60 years ago, on the raised hardwood bank curved roller skating rink floor, where the raised hardwood floor reverberating louder. My dad had businesses around that rink that I went to for 5 years that is still there. I get fond memories everytime I pass by that place. I look at that place & get spooked each time I go by that place, like I miss it very much, but the newer rink doesnt have that same feeling with the skates & Music shaking the floor, & the crowds. No one had nothing to do, most of the old people men would come to watch, because I believe they wanted to watch the girls, & think they were still young again!! Old people sort of loved that wild hippy stuff!

That's awesome that ABKO sent you the box set. This is one that I'd like to get myself but just can't really spend the money on currently. I wish they could come out with an LP with all of the 45 songs on it haha. I do like that they have the smaller spindle holes than the originals had. I always wondered growing up why they made the holes bigger on 45s and you had to use the adapter to listen to those haha. Interesting video Melinda! And I love the song 2000 Light Years a lot. Singles were fun to buy and collect. I bought a few 45s before they stopped selling them. We were connected to a band as a fan in a personal way that doesn’t exist anymore. You had different photos and sometimes the single was a different take from the official release. So you got two versions of a song! That doesn’t happen anymore. I think fans were very loyal and followed a band through every single. This is back when we cared about music. This type of marketing doesn’t exist anymore. Sub pop had a singles club with EPs too! Now Love Buzz by Nirvana is worth $800 to 1G! I do like boxed sets but can’t afford them anymore. It’s great to have it all complete in a Box and lid cover that you can display or move as you like. I bet you don’t know Jagger was paranoid around Altamonte and carried a small pistol around probably in his shoes or back. It was a voilent time kind off like now. And two performers were murdered on stage not too long ago. So he wasn’t paranoid for nothing. Stage performers are a target. I’m for bringing back the Brady Bill and banning AssaultRifles but nobody cares sMo the mass shootings will continue. Too bad🥲 Anyway thanks! 😊

Thank you Melinda for another great video. I can hardly wait to get my new 7" boxed set. Amazon emailed me and told me to expect it 2/5. From my personal experience, when I see ABKCO on anything, I expect them to have cheaped-out and cut corners wherever they could get away with it. The 45 "I Don't Know Why/Try A Little Harder" WAS released, and released worldwide in 1975. It appeared everywhere on the Decca, London or ABKCO labels. The "Brown Sugar/Wild Horses" 45 was original included in the "Sticky Fingers" deluxe boxed set, plus it was on the Rolling Stones record label as both singles had been originally released on. Again, when both of these songs were released on eaches own 45, a stereo version was only provided to radio stations as promos. Everybody else only got mono. Also, there was a short/long mono promo 45 for AM radio stations. Off the top of my head, I believe that the 45 included with the deluxe boxed set was disappointingly mono. The 45 "Out Of Time/Jiving Sister Fanny" was also first released in 1975 worldwide on the same various record labels. It was originally released in stereo. Who knows what ABKCO did to it. Then there was the "Honky Tonk Women/You can't Always Get What You Want" 45. It was originally released in mono, but again, "Honky Tonk Women" was sent to radio stations in stereo and mono. The original mono 45 had a real kick to it with lots of bass. The U.S. London copies were all injection-molded on poly-styrene. These gave a good kick but the sound was kind of distorted. In Canada, their 45's were only pressed on vinyl. So, in my jukebox, I have the Canadian vinyl promo 45 on London. It still kicks but is alot smoother. I would imagine the original Decca U.K. 45 would sound similar, as it was also pressed on vinyl. A re-issue was included in the "Let It Bleed" anniversary boxed set, but again, disappointingly it was mono. Even worse, it doesn't have as good of a bass kick as the original. It was probably digitally remastered and folded down from stereo. I fear that this same version is what is in the 7" boxed set. Hopefully, that extra "Double A" copy on Decca will be stereo.
@MelindaMurphy

Wow! Thank you for the great information. These 45's sound great and the Abkco company of today didn't cut any corners for this wonderful box set. It's everything I hoped it would be. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.

Melinda, just so you know, it’s actually Brian Jones playing the recorder on Ruby Tuesday. Also, the song Dandelion came out years before Keith’s daughter was born. Exactly who the song is about, if anyone in particular, is not known.

Yes, I accidentally said Bill instead of Brian. From the research I did in making this video, it was said that Dandelion was about Keith's daughter. That could be incorrect information but that is what a couple of my sources said. Either way, it's a great song. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.

I own all 3 of the CD singles box sets from Abkco that were released in the mid-'00s: 1963-1965, 1965-1967, and 1968-1971. These vinyl versions appear to have the same artwork as the CD boxes from 20 years ago. Anyway, every few years, I pull out my CD singles boxes and give them a listen or two. Well worth the purchase and have certainly got much enjoyment from them.

Great video Melinda, congrats. My favorite single in your box is She’s A Rainbow b/w 2,000 Light Years from Home. Best songs from Satanic Majesty’s Request. I have far too many Rolling Stones albums to justify buying a box of 45’s. But that is cool to see. And I Loved Once Upon A Time in Hollywood too! Highly underrated/talked about Tarantino movie. My favorite QT film behind Pulp Fiction. Anyway, thanks for sharing and have a great day

Nice overview. ABKCO do a great job at reissues. Both of the 7" singles on the ABKCO label that are included in the box were originally released to help promote the METAMORPHOSIS album in 1975. 'I Don't Know Why' came out in June and peaked at #42. You mention it was previously unreleased...is this box set version different than the 1975 7" version? I live in NY and often take friends to the location where both the front and back cover photos on the sleeve for 'Have You Seen Your Mother' were shot. Take note, their clothes in the color shot are the same outfits that they wore on their 9/11/66 Ed Sullivan Show performance for 'Have You Seen Your Mother' and 'Lady Jane'. I'm guessing the photos were shot within a day or so of the broadcast. I do an all-vinyl Friday afternoon shift on a local non-com radio station, and always play a London era Stones single using my original copies. They sound spectacular on the air. I can only imagine what these reissues must be like if they sound even better.
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy 8 месяцев назад
Hello! Thank you for sharing such wonderful information. The album cover for I Don't Know Why has a sleeve that says "never before released" but I think that they were just keeping the sleeve as original looking as possible for this box set so they left that on for the sleeve. This has been out as a CD box set before. I couldn't find any information about a release from 1975 but I don't doubt you. 😀 I'm glad it's back in print. The original 45's were probably made perfectly for the airwaves. It's hard to find the originals in clean shape. I do prefer the sound quality of this box set but the originals are cool. ♥️ Going to the location of that photo shoot would be very cool. I'm glad that you are able to treat your friends to a special place in history. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Another great video! I've been eyeing these sets for a while and it's phenomenal that ABKCO reached out to offer a freebie for you! I love to hear stories like that! I can relate with what you said about being envious to anyone who was around to witness all that music when it was new. I've been screaming that for years! 😀 One thing I've learned is if I ever come across a rare item like a picture sleeve with a trashed record or vice versa, especially at a decent price, I'll buy it. That $25.00 "She's A Rainbow" you let go at a flea market, you should've bought it as all you had to do was replace the record. I paid $85.00 for my copy. 😯 The four original US sleeves I don't have are predictable: "Heart Of Stone", "Satisfaction", "We Love You" and , of course, "Street Fighting Man" which is beyond stupidly scarce. There are about 10 copies known to exist (fascinating story behind the destruction of that sleeve). Speaking of "Street Fighting Man", IIRC correctly, the earlier pressings of that US 45 feature an early rough mix of the song with different vocals. My original 45 has said rough version. Have you checked which one you have? I really don't know when London changed it to the fold down mono mix of the album version. You should check and see! By the way, don't let anyone tell you Lennon and McCartney "allegedly" appear on "We Love You". They most certainly do and it's been documented 7,646,333,843,006 times. It's funny you mentioned "Child Of The Moon" being a bit of a goodbye to the psychedelic era. The song was demoed in 1967 during the sessions for "Their Satanic Majesties Request" but wasn't recorded until March, 1968, so, it just missed that ship. I think it would've fit perfectly on that album. I've created my own version of said album which, IMO, makes it one of their all time best. Note: I have a minty US mono copy of said LP still in the shrink! I also have a used Canadian mono pressing too. It seems the US mono pressings vary from dedicated and fold down mixes. If you are in search of the true mono pressing, before buying, be sure to find out which version it is. The main clue are the three bells on the intro to "The Lantern". Three = mono. Two = fold down or stereo. Anyway, I love checking in on your videos! Keep 'em coming and let the grooviness roll! 🎸🎸🎸🎸

Thank you so much for the information. From what I could tell while listening to it, Street Fighting Man sounds like the version I would hear on the radio. It didn't sound different to me. I have heard that the original sleeve is extremely rare and expensive. I guess I will just be content with the one from this box. Same with She's A Rainbow. I had no idea a 45 of that song was that expensive. I should have bought the sleeve. Lol. Oh well. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Hey Melinda, wonderful video. Thanks for sharing this boxed set with us. Are the singles in the boxed set remastered and in mono &/or stereo? That would account for the improved sound. Unfortunately the reality was that the sound of a lot of their original singles wasnt great. 'Thin sounding' was a good way to describe it. Sometimes Mick's voice sounded like he was competing with the band volume wise (for example "Have You Seen Your Mother...") . The mono mixing wasn't really great, compared to Beatles singles of the same era. The later ones improved from around 1968/9 onwards though I think they had changed producer by then. I remember seeing Aussie pressings of Decca Stones singles in our house growing up in the 60'sm usually bought by my older brothers. I have pretty much all of the Australian Stones Decca singles in my collection with some UK, US & NZ thrown in too. I'm tempted to try to get both Singles boxed sets, though I do have the 4 LP & 3 CD Singles boxed sets from the early 90's. The sad drawback (if any) will be that the Stones don't own the rights to tracks their famous era, thanks to 'Mr. Abkco', Allen Klein their former manager. Not sure what they will get from this release if anything. Interesting to note also that each single had 'solid centres'. The quality looks similar to The Beatles Singles box from a few years back. I will seek it out. Just need to find the space for it lol. Love your work Melinda. Take care sweetheart ❤😘😘

Hey! ♥️😀 The quality is on par with that Beatles singles box set. The sound quality is great. The majority of the singles are in mono but songs like Brown Sugar are in stereo. They all sound very good and a big improvement to my ears from the originals I compared them to. This is such a great era of The Stones. It's so cool that you have the memory of seeing those old 45's around your home. I hope The Stones do get some of the profits from their own music but the good news is that they don't really need the money. That's what's so refreshing about them. They are still making music and performing because they want to - not because they have to ♥️ Thank you for the kind words. Have a beautiful day. 😀

As an aside the photo on the "Paint It Black" picture sleeve was shot in Los Angeles at Franklin Canyon Reservoir near Hollywood, CA. The Stones "Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)" album cover photo was photographed there as well. This area was (and is) extensively used in the TV and film industry. The opening to the Andy Griffith Show where Andy and Opie walk down the trail to the lake was filmed there.

my first memory of the stones on American TV was a local los Angelas broadcast from an event called the teen age fair, where they didn't have the band, just jagger dancing in the street performing in front of temporary bleachers, in black and white back in those days. For a Stones fan and those who like the 7" 45 rpm format, this looks like a very nice box set. It reminds me of the very first Stones vinyl album I acquired back in the early '80's. It is "Hot Rocks 1964 -1971". I remember the sound level being low on the album, so you had to really crank it up to rock out. I liked this album so much that I also got a CD version later on. I consider this time period to be the Stones' golden age. My top three favorite songs on the album are Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, and Brown Sugar. Did you know that Brown Sugar and Wild Horses were recorded at the Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama? Yes, that's the Muscle Shoals immortalized in Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Sweet Home Alabama. ❤Fame was one of the greatest recording studios in the world at the time, and the Stones like many other artists wanted to get in on the action to record there. 😻 If you haven't seen the Muscle Shoals Fame Studio documentary, you'll love it. Though I'm not a fan of the 7" 45 rpm format, I can really see and understand your enthusiasm for this music. It's certainly some of the greatest rock music ever recorded. 👍👍👍

As a kid spectator I'd go to the skating rink curved bank round wood track & listen to the jukebox playing mostly the rolling stones very early music that the wood floor vibrating the bass louder. Many went the to meet girls, & that always brought along some people's rowdiness there in the south. I wanted my dad to start a skating rink with his building to make a lot of money, but I think my dad mistakenly didn't do it, because the owner of the skating rink knew my dad well, & he told my dad he wished he hadnt done the skating rink for rowdy kids there. Funny thing he ran the skating rink forever. Piles of adults like to watch as spectators, many were men there that I guess liked to watch the pretty girls. During the Viet Nam war hippy women were after the few menl, even during the seventies it wasnt looked down on, as itis today, to have a few girlfriends, but I was too young at the beginning of the hippy craze. There were a few kids bands then, but only the Beatles were eagerly waiting for their records, but it was a really boring time back then, we had nothing to do, but go out with our friends & play records. But truthfully cds starting making music more popular, truthfully 3 years ago, yotube made records popular, until they took most of them off. You was speaking of prescription drugs, for a few years, every one of our mothers were taking diet drugs & never able then with women & their pretty clothes, unlike todays couch potatoes. People were shyer then & hated the pictures taken, unlike we are use to intrusive cameras now. Sorry for the long post, but you mentioned parents prescription drugs, but I dont like to do a halfway unintelligible nastalgic point.

Hey, Melinda! Are the earlier singles in this 66-71 box in mono or stereo (up to Jumpin' Jack Flash)? Performance is worth seeing but it is very disturbing in places; some visuals are there to make you feel almost nauseated; a menacing part of the movie featuring the soundtrack instrumental called Rolls Royce & Acid is not about LSD. There is, however, an amazing sex scene with Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg.

Curious why these new singles are coming out with a smaller center hole compared to the traditional 45 hole that requires an adapter? I know my latest Pro-Ject turntable was the first I have bought that didn't come with a 45 adapter. Speaking of the Stones and drug busts, I hope you have read Keith Richard's autobiography. It starts off with the tale of Fordyce, AR, and it's county sheriff. Fortunately, their American lawyer was good friend with Jimmy Carter at the time. Great story! Great book!

@@MelindaMurphy the book, as you could probably guess is a roller coaster ride. I think you will shocked at some of the stories he tells, the irony of a few (I don't want to give anything away), and that for the cliche version of him, he's actually not that at all.

@@MelindaMurphy I found some Van Halen live bootlegs you might be interested in. It's really good quality from their 1998 tour.

@@MelindaMurphy I finally got around to ordering The Rolling Stones Mono box set on Amazon. Now I am afraid. I knew it was an import, but it didn't specify where it was coming from. The tracking shows China. I started reading the reviews. Poor quality printing on the covers and sleeves, dirty sounding, and two copies of Beggar's Banquet and no Stray Cats. I ran into this problem in 2009 when I ordered The Beatles mono box set on Amazon and got a Chinese counterfeit. Ugh! Have you heard of this set being counterfeited by Chinese?

@@claybowler751 if you ordered it from Amazon, it shouldn't be a problem. I haven't heard of any counterfeit box sets being made for this. The albums sound very nice and the covers look great. Let me know when it arrives. Like I said, if it was ordered from Amazon you shouldn't have anything to worry about. ♥️🤗

I looked at the information but didn't see how many were pressed. I assume once they sell out, they're gone. If I find out the number, I will come back and tell you. Thank you and take care.

I don’t like the little whole in the middle. I like the large whole in the middle. Like how I remember a 45rpm record.

It's nice to not have to worry about an adapter. That's one thing I do like about the change. Thank you and take care.
