From what I understand most of the casualties in ancient warfare occurred after the losing side broke and fled with cavalry in pursuit. If you could withdraw from a defeat in good order or stage a successful rear guard action, it could be possible to turn regroup and try again. This is likely why someone like Ceasar could lose a battle and still win the war with his cool headed approach to war and his well trained veterans who were hard to break into a route know that it was likely a death Sentence. Light cavalry did most of their work scouting and foraging before a battle and running down fleeing enemies or protecting their comrades in a rear guard after the battle. They were sometimes doing little more than waiting during the battle.
@thodan467
@thodan467 Год назад
not that the heavy infantry did not their part of the slaughter after braking the enemy cavalry did also take part in the skirmishing opening a battle and during battle fighting on the flanks, l Hannibal used his numedians to guard on e of his flanks against the socii cav, till his celtic and iberian horse smashed first the roman cav and then socii cav . Then the numedians kept these cavalry running during the later part of the battle

Loved it, must disagree with the point of invasion, the Romans invaded at Chichester, here there is a natural harbor which the Romans used to their advantage. They could also fall back to the isle of white if things went badly. At Chichester there is a huge palace, built by the Romans for the chieftain of that area as a thanks for allowing them to set up here unapossed. From here they moved out east and west to start the conquering of Britannia. It made good military sense to land in a friendly area. Most archeologists think the same, in fact archeologist John Manley has written a book about this, called, AD 43, One to read. I feel Richbourgh was the

nice armour Kevin. Roman Britain was the high water mark of Western Roman conquest and was always a problem for the Empire as a whole as they got stuck at Scotland and never turned a profit from the entire conquest of Britannia. Cost of expansion and occupation was a net drain on the centre as the garrison required to hold Britain made the Roman governor of the isles the de facto eighth strongest ruler in the empire. Hence the later regrettable tendency for the British Roman army to sometimes turn around and re-invade the continent to 'reinstate' the old ways. Simple economics guaranteed that the Romans would not stay in Britain.

I often regret taking Latin in high school after watching my brother (fluent in Spanish from education) travel and make friends with people that I can’t communicate with, but something I’ll never regret is reading excerpts from Caesar’s Comentarii de Bello Gallico in its original form. To read a 2000 year old first hand account of men jumping from their ships into waist deep water, throwing their pila at the native armies lined up along the coast, and charging forth to battle without the corruption of translation is a gift that I’m very grateful for. Amazing video as always!

(Ancient Rome is the most fascinating period of the ancient world in my books) Why invade Britain, besides it is there, that they had no knowledge about what the country could add to the empire? I have a feeling that the number of British warriors (150000) is widely exaggerated. It sounds morel like a write up a general (Tribune?) would write home afterwards to boost his own heroics to gain points in the senate. Remember that many of them where on a political rise but needed the field experience to rise higher in the senate ranks. So making it sound like they did better then they did was on their agenda. After all, who would call the bluff? They where half a world away and there was no witnesses except common plebs (soldiers) and who would trust their words?

As a Dutch citizen, this is very interesting, for the Batavians. I hadn't known that the Batavians were specialized in river crossing. But from their territory (the "great rivers" in the Netherlands) that makes a lot of sense. The Batavians are famous in Dutch history for the "Revolt of the Batavi" in 69 AD, led by Gaius Julius Civilis, a kind of Dutch analog to Arminius (the Arminius of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest). The area once inhabited by the Batavi is called "Betuwe" in Dutch today; the name "Betuwe" is a direct descendant of the name "Batavi". It's the land between the two big rivers (Rhine and Meuse) that flow from east through west through the middle of the Netherlands.

I do like Claudius, he was a generally wholesome Emperor, but he was never much of a soldier.

Don't forget, at the time of the roman invasion of "britain" My ancestor Caradog's speech was so good that he was granted clemency in Rome. Would have been in Latin. Not brother celts, same people, no hiding was given Caesar left licking his wounds, couldn't handle the chariots. Caractacus/Caradog was the King of Briton, his father before him the king of the britons. Much to share Tywysog dw I

Oooh Ive been reading alot about this very subject! I really got into vercingetorix there for awhile. His story is really cool. His tactics of scorched earth were brilliant for its time. Unfortunately he suffered the same fate but his story is fascinating. Now I gotta learn more about the roman conquest of Britain. Ive read about Caesars invasion but its a fascinating read. Looking forward to learning more about it.

Loved this. But there is one question I can’t understand. After Roman Britain ceased why is the Saxon period so devoid of landmarks. They will have seen the stone buildings the Romans built but they built wooden and mud huts which have left no trace.

It's a great question Sandra, one of the things I believe is that many of the Romano-British did indeed stay in their stone houses, but as for the rest of the Celts, they had never had them, they were still in their villages and huts just the same as when the Romans arrived. It would seem as though the Celts/Britons just got on with life during the occupation and simply carried on after the Romans left. It was after the Romans left that the Saxons invaded.
